Project Engineer: Hasnain Raza Asset Description: CN Melt Tank
Plant: NP Revision No: Rev.0
Peer (if Applicable): Hafiz Ayaz MOC Category: Reliability
Problem Description & Proposed Solutio:
The phosphate solution formed during dissolution of rock with nitric acid is further cooled in crystallizers and
separated in rotary vacuum filter drums. The Calcium nitrate Ca(NO3)2.4 aq.crystals separated in filter drum
and washed with nitric acid are continuously discharged to CN melt tanks 40-2022/23, where these crystals
are melted with the help of steam. The resulting CN melt is sent to the CN conversion section of CAN plant by
means of CN melt pumps 40-7710/17/90. The level is controlled in 40-2022 by level controller LICAH 40-414.
Ammonia is also added in CN melt to control free acid in CN melt tank. The CN melt tank (40-2022), contains
SL steam coils while the CN melt tank (40-2023) contains steam spargers to heat the CN solution. It is difficult
to maintain CN melt tank (40-2022) temperature through steam coils and frequent coil leakages also occurred
due to reliability issue.
To deal with the above scenario it is proposed to install 4 nos. of steam spargers in CN melt tank (40-2022) as
Per spargers of CN melt tank (40-2023). Drawing of steam spargers of CN tank (40-2023) is attached. This
‘modification will help to make CN melt temperature up to desirable limit and avoid any abnormality.
In view of above, following recommendation is purposed installation of steam header of ide tank
and four branch spargers of 3" size inside CN melt tank (40-2022). The material of spargers

PROCESS PACKAGE
“Installation of sparger in CN melt tank (40-
2022)“
‘PROCESS ENGINEERINGPakarab Fertilizers Limited. ____PEMpr2i-
Background & Reasons for Change
The phosphate solution formed during dissolution of rack with nitric acid is further cooled in
crystallizers and separated in rotary vacuum filter drums. The Calcium nitrate Ca(NOs):.4 aq.
crystals separated in filter drum and washed with nitric acid are continuously discharged to
CN melt tanks 40-2022 / 23, where these crystals are melted with the help of steam. By
means of SL steam the temperature in these tanks is maintained at about 60 °C by TIC-
40108 / 10. The resulting CN melt is sent to the CN conversion section of CAN plant by
means of CN melt pumps 40-1110/11/90. The level is controlled in 40-2022 by level
controller LICAH 40-414. Ammonia is also added in CN melt to control free acid in CN melt
tank.
The CN melt tank (40-2022) contains SL steam coils while the CN melt tank (40-2023)
contains steam spargers to heat the CN solution. tis difficult to maintain CN melt tank (40-
2022) temperature through steam coils and frequent coil leakages also occurred due to
reliability issue.
Technical Evaluation
To deal with the above scenario it is proposed to install 4 nos. of steam spargers in CN melt
tank (40-2022) as per spargers of CN melt tank (40-2023). Drawing of steam spargers of CN
tank (40-2023) is attached.
This modification will help to make CN melt temperature upto desirable limit and avoid any
abnormality.
In view of above, following recommendation is purposed.
© Installation of steam header of 5” size inside tank and four branch spargers of 3” size
inside CN melt tank (40-2022)
The material of spargers will be SS316L.
Process EngineeringPakarab Fertilizers Limited. PE/NP/21-
Recommendation
‘* Project Engr. will conduct Sub-HSE (M) for installation of 4 nos. of steam sparger of
3” size and main header of 5” size.
‘* FM will execute this modification as per MOC.
