1.8 FACTORY WITNESS TEST


A. The Contractor shall be responsible for performing the transformer factory test

1.05 WARRANTY
A. Manufacturer’s Warranty: Submit a written warranty signed by the manufacturer agreeing to
repair, restore or replace any defective equipment specified in this section during the specified
warranty period
1. Warranty Period: 5 years from the date of delivery.

1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING


A. Store transformers protected from weather and so condensation will not form on or in units.
Provide temporary heating according to manufacturer's written instructions.
B. Packing and shipping requirement shall generally be as per latest revision of SEC General
Requirements for Equipment/Materials, 01-SDMS-01 or as per purchase order requirements.
Each distribution transformers shall be packed as a complete unit and shall be delivered ready for
use. Packing shall protect the distribution transformers against damage during shipment and site
handling. Packing crates shall be marked with the following information:
1. Manufacturer’s Name and Model/Type
2. Country of Origin
3. Gross Weight, (kg)
4. Handling Instructions
5. Final Destination

1.07 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate size and location of concrete bases. Concrete, reinforcement, and formwork
requirements are specified in Division 03.

1.08 FACTORY WITNESS TEST
A. The Contractor shall be responsible for performing the transformer factory test.
B. The transformer factory test shall be performed in the presence of the Client’s and Engineer’s
representatives’ team; the team will comprise three representatives per each mission, the mission
could be to inspect one or more equipment for each type.
C. Test procedure and program are to be submitted for approval prior to test conduction, by at least
14 days. Provide four man-visits to cover all types of tests including transportation and all test
expenses.
D. The contractor shall provide to the engineer a certified factory test report.
E. Perform the following factory-certified tests on each transformer, Reports shall comply with the
minimum information requirements of IEC 60076 standard:
1. Resistance measurements of all windings on rated voltage tap and at tap extremes.
2. Turns ratio, polarity, and phase relation on rated voltage connection.
3. Transformer no-load losses and excitation current at 100 percent of ratings.
4. Impedance voltage and load loss at rated current and rated frequency on rated voltage connection
and at tap extremes.
5. Applied voltage and induced voltage.
6. Partial discharge.
7. Temperature rise at minimum and maximum ratings.
8. Insulation resistance.
9. Audible sound level.
10. Short-circuit capability.

1.09 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Spare parts for dry type transformers shall include but not limited to fan, fan controller and
temperature monitoring unit.
B. Tools and Instruments: provide tools instruments required for normal routine inspection, testing,
operation and maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURERS
A. Approved Manufacturers of Power Transformers: Subject to compliance with requirements and
project specifications, provide products by one of the following or approved equal:
1. ABB. (China)
2. Schneider Electric (France)
3. Siemens (Germany)

2.02 DRY-TYPE DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMERS


A. Type: 3-phase, indoor type, step down, two cupper winding, low hysteresis and eddy current
losses, solvent less cast epoxy resin, with minimum class H insulation for LV and MV windings,
rated for continuous operation under worst site ambient conditions at full load, and complying with
IEC 60076-11. Winding temperature rise is not to exceed 90 deg. core is to be constructed from
high grade, non-aging “Cold Rolled Grain Oriented” silicon sheet steel laminations with suitable
grade to fulfil the losses and noise levels specified below.
B. The entire core assembly shall be covered with a resin-based lacquer as protection for corrosion
before the coils are mounted. Every part of the core shall be of robust design capable of
withstanding any shocks or vibration to which they may be subjected during hauling, lifting,
transportation, etc.
C. Each transformer shall be a double wound type with both the H.V. and L.V. windings dense glass
tape reinforces in the encapsulated in rigid steel mould. The coils shall be impregnated with
epoxy resin and cast under vacuum, to produce a smooth finish without voids and undulations.

D. Insulation and Encapsulation: Humidity resistant, explosion and fire-resistant, self-extinguishing,
tropicalized, giving non-toxic gases in the event of fire. To fulfil environmental, climate and fire
classes of E3, C2 and F1 respectively to IEC 60076-11 / BS EN 50541-1.
E. MV windings shall be encapsulated in glass fibre reinforced epoxy resin or quartz filler epoxy
resin. Encapsulation of the winding shall be achieved by vacuum impregnation at elevated
temperature and shall be free of bubbles and voids.
F. MV windings shall be vacuum cast in a class F fireproof epoxy resin casting system composed of:
1. An epoxy resin
2. An anhydride hardener (glass fibre filler must have flexibilizing additive, for quartz filler
flexibilizing additive is not required)
3. A flame-retardant filler
G. Transformer’s emergency overloading capability shall comply with IEC 60076-12.
H. Noise Level: A weighted sound power (LWA)/pressure (LPA) level measured at 1m in any
direction from transformer (with fans off) in accordance with SDMS and IEC 60076-10 and is not
to exceed BS EN 50541-1 values for the specified classes in item above.
I. Noise level for transformers with fans: the sound power/pressure level with all fans in operation is
not to exceed 6 dB additional to the specified limit.
J. Windings: Medium voltage winding shall be cupper strip conductor, and low voltage winding shall
be cupper conductor foil.
K. Winding current densities at rated normal and short circuit conditions shall be submitted for
approval. Normal densities shall not exceed or 1.8 A/mm2 for copper winding, unless otherwise
submitted by manufacturer and approved by engineer
L. Tapping shall be provided on MV side by means of re-connectable links (off-circuit), giving +/-
2.5% and +/-5% tapping on transformers for each primary voltage rating.
M. A visible warning notice shall be fixed adjacent to the tapping links and worded as follows:
" WARNING - OFF LOAD TAP CHANGING LINKS - ISOLATE HV AND LV SUPPLIES TO
TRANSFORMER BEFORE OPERATION"
N. Rubber sound isolation pads are to be provided between core and coil assemblies, and between
base and housing.
O. Cooling fans shall permit 40% increase in rated power.
P. No load and load losses shall be kept as minimum for efficient operation as per Saudi electricity
authority requirements & specifications.
Q. Mounting and Handling: Transformer base and structure are to have lifting hooks or lugs, towing
and lashing eyes or lugs and provision for roller wheels.
R. Enclosure Earthing bolts or copper pads are to be provided on main frame of transformer. for
earthing of transformer’s housing and core.
S. Housing: galvanized Sheet steel construction, IP 31 for indoor installation.
T. Enclosure shall be made of galvanized steel sheet at least 3mm thickness.
U. The enclosure shall be adequately protected against corrosion and shall be painted with color
RAL 7035 or as per latest revision of SEC specification No. 01-SDMS-01.
V. The perforated bottom plate shall have sufficient clearance from the floor level to guarantee
sufficient flow of natural air ventilation.
W. LV star neutral point shall be connected to a separate earthing terminal.
X. Temperature monitoring is to be provided by externally mounted tripping units giving alarm and
trip at two stages with adjustable temperature difference, actuated by three embedded thermostat
sensors in LV windings (hot-spot). Additional thermal monitoring/control is to be provided for
cooling fan operation. Temperature monitoring system is to be microprocessor based digital type
and equipped with temperature indicator to display winding temperature values in degrees
Celsius.
Y. Transformer manufacturer calculations/literature to demonstrate the transformer's ability to
operate under the specified emergency loading conditions in accordance with IEC 60076-12 must
be provided.

Z. The transformer shall also be able to calculate/estimate the loss of life during its operational life
and provide consumed life estimate based on IEC 60076-12.
AA. Transformer Connection Box: Transformer connection box shall be provided where bus-duct shall
be terminated to a transformer. The box shall be provided with lugs, and flexible cables to
connect the bus duct to transformer bushings. Size shall be as indicated on drawings.
BB. Characteristics (medium voltage primary - low voltage secondary):
4. Rated Power (net site rating): as shown on drawings.
5. Winding Connections: Dyn 11 with neutral fully insulated and brought out.
6. Frequency: 60 Hz.
7. Rated Voltage (full load):
a. MV Side (primary): 13.8 kV.
b. LV Side (secondary): 400 V.
8. Impedance Voltage at Rated Current: 6 %.
9. Tap-Changer Positions: +/-2.5% and +/-5% tapping on transformers for primary voltage rating.
10. Rated Power Frequency Withstand-Voltage: 38kV.
11. Rated Lightning Impulse Withstand-Voltage: 95 kV.
12. Short-Circuit Apparent Power of the System will be defined after coordination with electricity
authority.
13. Duration of Short-Circuit-Withstand: 2 seconds.
14. Terminal Connection System:
a. MV Side:
1) A medium-voltage air-insulated cable termination box shall be provided to form
as an integral part of the transformer enclosure.
2) Medium-voltage cable termination shall be done through Type-C bushing
interface per EN 50181.
3) The MV terminations shall be labelled U, V, W, using an indelible black colour
paint. Phase identification using adhesive stickers is not acceptable.
4) Cable termination box shall be adequate for terminating 3 x single-core or 1 x
three-core medium-voltage power cables per SEC specification 11-SDMS-03,
with the use of T-Type separable elbow connector per latest revision of 12-
SDMS-01. The cable box shall have a single gasket, removable, bolted-type
cover. Its bottom plate shall be in two halves with cable entry steel knockouts
suitable for the aforementioned cables. Loose rubber bushings shall be
provided inside the cable box for the knockouts.

b. LV Side:

1) A low-voltage air-insulated cable termination box shall be provided to form as


an integral part of the transformer enclosure, and shall be located on the
opposite side of the medium-voltage cable termination box.
2) Connection of the LV neutral shall be directly made to the LV terminals
between the LV phase bars.
3) The LV terminal bars shall be made of electrical grade cupper, tin-plated with
minimum thickness of 20μm, and shall be suitable to accept busway.
4) The LV terminals shall be provided with complete fittings (suitable bolts, nuts,
and washers) for busway connections, and labelled n, u, v, w from right to left
by using indelible black colour paint. Phase identification using adhesive
stickers are not acceptable.
5) The LV terminals shall be suitable for connecting busway.

CC. Accessories are to include the following:


1. Digital protective unit for transformer monitoring and protection against winding temperature with
thermometer for indication of winding temperature values, 2 N.O. contacts for winding
temperature alarm and trip, along with necessary winding temperature sensors (at least one 3-
wire PT100 or equivalent per phase) and interface with protection system.
2. Temperature sensors PT100 sensors shall be placed in a tube to enable them to be replaced if
ever necessary.
3. Four BI directional rollers.
4. Danger plate and SEC monogram as per SEC drawing and specification shall be provided and
installed at the front of the unit using M5 stainless steel (oval head rounded neck bolts with nuts
and external tooth lock washers) not removable/accessible from the front. SEC shall approve
location and samples of danger and monogram plates prior the installation.
5. Fans and fans digital control unit for extra rating of transformer. Controller shall have input dry
contacts interface for remote control enable and output alarm/fault relay. Controller shall comply
with IEC 61000-6-2 for EMC immunity and with IEC 61000- 6-4 for EMC emission. Controller
shall be similar to VRT200 or approved equal. Supplier shall coordinate with contractor for
necessary power supply for fans and controller.
DD. Cooling System: Forced-Air-Cooled shall permit 40% increase in rated power.
1. Equip with forced-air-cooling equipment, including fans, conduit, wiring, motor controllers, and
thermometer with alarm contacts for fan control.
2. Forced-air cooling shall be regulated automatically by sensors placed in the low-voltage winding's
air ducts. Forced-air cooling shall include three-phase electronic digital temperature monitor,
fans, control wiring, control panel with test switch, indicating lights, alarm, and alarm silencing
switch.
EE. Dry type transformer shall be monitored by CCMS system in coordination with the CCMS
specialist and manufacturer, for the data points and functions to be provided as mentioned in
dwg. Provide comprehensive and complete documentations regarding the requirements of the
integration with the CCMS, including databases, Object IDs and description, component
addresses and any other pertinent information.
FF. Earthing
1. Internal Earthing
a) All non-current carrying metal parts of the transformer with the exception of the
core laminations, core bolts and associated clamping plates shall be
maintained at ground potential.
b) The top main core clamping structure shall be connected to the enclosure by a
copper strap. The bottom core clamping structure shall be earthed by suitable
method.
2. Earthing of Magnetic Circuit: The transformer core shall be insulated from the structure so
as to withstand core insulation tests and subsequently be earthed through a detachable
flexible copper link.
3. External Earthing Provision shall be made to connect external earthing at positions close
to each bottom four corners of the enclosure. Earthing terminals shall be adequately
dimensioned to receive the external earthing conductor.

2.03 IDENTIFICATION DEVICES


A. Nameplates: Engraved, laminated-plastic or metal nameplate for each transformer, mounted
with corrosion-resistant screws. Nameplates and label products in accordance with IEC 60616.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION
A. Examine areas and conditions for compliance with requirements for medium-voltage
transformers.
B. Examine roughing-in of conduits and earthing systems to verify the following:
1. Wiring entries comply with layout requirements.
2. Entries are within conduit-entry tolerances specified by manufacturer and no feeders will have to
cross section barriers to reach load or line lugs.
C. Examine walls, floors, roofs, and concrete bases for suitable mounting conditions where
transformers will be installed.
D. Verify that ground connections are in place and that requirements in Division 26 Section
260526 "Earthing and Bonding for Electrical Systems" have been met. Maximum ground
resistance shall be 5 ohms at location of transformer or as per utility requirement.
E. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.02 INSTALLATION
1. Locations and Layout: Exact locations and physical layout of equipment and components may be
varied as required to suit manufacturer's design and as approved, provided the required
functions and operations are accomplished; follow the identification of the units indicated on
Drawings exactly to ease checking and building maintenance procedures.
2. Equipment Bases: Ensure that concrete bases and foundations provided for installation of
equipment are constructed in accordance with approved shop and construction drawings and
equipment manufacturers' drawings and that holes for fixing bolts and provisions for passage of
cables etc. are provided as required.
3. Cable Trenches: Ensure that trench construction and covers provided for installation of power
and control cables are in accordance with approved shop and construction drawings.
4. Built-In Items: Ensure that equipment supports, fixings and the like, and sleeves for passage of feeders
and cables which are to be built into concrete foundations, bases, cable trenches or building structure
are provided as and when required and that they are properly installed.
5. Equipment: Install on concrete bases etc., and assemble completely plumb and level, before grouting
in holding-down bolts.
6. Supports and Terminations: Install all incoming and outgoing cable supports, cable ends and
termination fittings required for MV, LV and control cables.
7. Relays: Set in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and the Local Power Authorities
requirements.
8. Earthing: Ensure that earthing installation is as described in Section "Earthing and Bonding" of the
Specification and/or as shown on the Drawings.
9. Temporary Lifting Provisions: Remove temporary lifting eyes, channels, brackets, and temporary
blocking of moving parts from switchgear units and components.

3.03 CONNECTIONS
A. Tighten bus joint, connector, and terminal bolts according to manufacturer's published
torque-tightening values. If manufacturer's torque values are not indicated, use those specified in
applicable Standards.

3.04 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Equipment: Inspect equipment upon delivery to site and report any damage to Engineer.
B. Components: Check component ratings, types, sizes and wiring connections, including current
and voltage transformers, fuses, switches, instruments and relays.
C. Manufacturer's instructions are to be followed under all circumstances. Carry out and record
measurement and tests recommended by the manufacturer.
D. Test Objectives: To ensure transformer is operational within industry and manufacturer's
tolerances, is installed according to the Contract Documents, and is suitable for energizing.
E. Test Labeling: On satisfactory completion of tests for each transformer, attach a dated and signed
"Satisfactory Test" label to tested component.
F. Schedule tests and provide notification at least 7 days in advance of test commencement.
G. Report: Submit a written report of observations and tests. Report defective materials and
installation.
H. Tests: Include the following minimum inspections and tests according to manufacturer's written
instructions.
1. Inspect accessible components for cleanliness, mechanical and electrical integrity, and damage or
deterioration. Verify that temporary shipping bracing has been removed. Include internal
inspection through access panels and covers for dry-type transformers.
2. Inspect bolted electrical connections for tightness according to manufacturer's published torque
values.
3. Insulation Resistance: Perform meg-ohmmeter tests of primary and secondary winding to winding
and winding to ground.
4. Duration of Each Test: 10 minutes.
5. Temperature Correction: Correct results for test temperature deviation from 20 deg C standard.
6. Turns Ratio: Measure between windings at each tap setting. Measured ratios deviating more than
0.5 percent from calculated or measured ratio for an adjacent coil is not acceptable.
7. Winding Resistance: Measure for windings at nominal tap setting. Measured resistance, deviating
more than 1 percent, from that of adjacent windings, is not acceptable.
8. Verification of the operation of the cooling system.
9. Functional test of all protective devices.
I. Test Failures: Compare test results with specified performance or manufacturer's data. Correct
deficiencies identified by tests and retest. Verify that transformers meet specified requirements.

3.05 EARTHING
A. Comply with Division 26 Section "Earthing and Bonding" for materials and installation requirements.

3.06 CLEANING
A. On completion of installation, inspect components. Remove paint splatters and other spots, dirt,
and debris. Repair scratches and mars on finish to match original finish. Clean components
internally using methods and materials recommended by manufacturer.

3.07 ADJUSTING
A. After installing and cleaning, touch up scratches and mars on finish to match original finish.
B. Adjust transformer taps to provide optimum voltage conditions at utilization equipment throughout
normal operating cycle of facility. Record primary and secondary voltages and tap settings and
submit with test results.

3.08 DEMONSTRATION
A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to explain transformers and accessories and
to train the Employer's maintenance personnel. Include a minimum of 8 hours of training in
operation and maintenance. Provide both classroom training and hands-on equipment
operation covering the following:
1. Safety precautions.
2. Features and construction of project transformers and accessories.
3. Routine cleaning.
4. Interpretation of readings of indicating and alarm devices.
5. Features, operation, and maintenance of separable, insulated, connector system.
6. Tap-changing procedures.
B. Schedule training with the Construction Manager with at least 7 days' advance notice.
