meaning of the different departments if necessary.

Students discuss the differences between the words in pairs and then discuss them as a whole class.

1. Designer brands are expensive and made by a famous designer, while High street brands are intended for the
ordinary public and not for rich people
2. Both refer to places where we can pay for clothes: till is BrE and register is AmE
3. A shopping centre is a large building with many different shops; a department store is a large shop with many
different departments
4. Both refer to a person who works in a clothes shop: shop assistant is BrE and salesclerk is AmE
5. Fit refers to the product being the correct size, and suit refers to how the product makes someone look.

3. Focus on vocabulary

Part A
Students work individually for Part A and B, then in pairs for Part C and D.
Ensure pronunciation of target vocabulary is correct. Pay attention to schwa sounds in bargain /"bA:g@n/. You may
wish to mention that refund can also be used as a verb, with the stress on the second syllable.

Students label the pictures individually and then discuss what other clothes are commonly made of these materials,
before discussing their own clothes. Encourage students to use a dictionary to find words for materials not listed
here (as there are many others). It might be a good idea to write a list on the board as students think of them.
You could also discuss the difference between synthetic and natural materials. You could also mention that the
adjectives woollen and woolly are often used instead of the noun wool.
