M.Sc. (Applied Physics)
Second Semester End Term Reappear Examinations – April-May, 2019
Course Title: Solid State Physics

Course Code: PHY4201

Exam Dept. Ref.: R399RO
Time: 3 Hours Maximum Marks: 70
Note: This question paper has three sections : Section A, Section B and Section C.
Attempt (i) Any FIVE questions from Section-A.
(ii) Any TWO questions from Section-B.
(iii) Section-C is compulsory.

Section –A (Answer any five questions) 30 Marks

(Each question carries 6 marks)

1. What do you mean by thin films? Explain magnetron sputtering used for the deposition of
thin films. Discuss its main advantages and limitations.

2. Discuss Langevin’s theory for a paramagnetic gas and derive the mathematical
expression for the paramagnetic susceptibility of the gas. List the main shortcomings of
this theory?

3. What is Bragg’s law? Derive and explain the Bragg's diffraction condition in reciprocal
space.

4. Explain Hall-effect for the semiconductors? A n-type semiconductor, 0.5 mm wide, 0.07
mm thick and 25 mm longcarrying a current 40 mA along its length. Magnetic field of 1
T with the fieldperpendicular to the 0.1 mm x 20 mm face is applied. If the Hall co-
efficient is 5.84x10-4m3/C, find the Hall voltage.

5. What is effective mass of the electron in periodic potential in the crystal? Derive the
⃗ curve.
mathematical expression and explain the same on the basis of 𝐸⃗ vs 𝐾

6. Define reciprocal lattice. Using the primitive lattice vectors of the hexagonal space lattice
as:
1𝑎𝑥̂ + (4𝑎/2) 𝑦̂ 𝑎⃗ = ‒ 1𝑎𝑥̂ + (3𝑎/2
𝑎⃗1 = ⃗ ̂
2 ; 2 2 ) 𝑦̂ and 𝑎3 = 3𝑐𝑧

Find the reciprocal vector of hexagonal space lattice.

Section – B (Answer any two questions) 20 Marks
(Each question carries 10 marks)

7. Discuss the quantum theory of Paramagnetism and obtain Curies law for paramagnetic
material.

8. a) What is type II super conductor? Explain the properties of type II superconductors with
suitable example.

b) Explain why the good conductors like Ag and Cu are not usually superconductors?

c) Describe the major uses and potentials of superconductors.

9. Using Kronig-Penny model, show that energy spectrum of solids consists of numberof
allowed energy bands separated by forbidden gaps.

Section – C (Compulsory) 20 Marks

10. a) Write short notes on- (3X3)

i) Photo-Luminescence ii) B-H curve iii) Bloch Function

b) What are the Cooper pairs and differentiate between hard and soft superconductors?(6)

c) Derive the phonon dispersion relation for the acoustic optical branch for one-
dimensional diatomic lattice with massesM1and M2 . (5)
