SUBJECT COMBINATIONS 2023

OVERVIEW

The subject combinations offered by the College are based on the guidelines from the Ministry of
Education.
1. Each subject combination comprises 3 parts:
• Content-based H2 subjects
• Content-based H1 subjects
• Compulsory H1 subjects

2. There are 3 compulsory H1 subjects, namely, Project Work (PW), General Paper (GP) and Mother
Tongue Language (MTL). Students who had obtained D7 or better in HMTL at O-Level can be
granted exemption from the MTL Examination.

3. The norm is to offer 3H2 and 1H1 content-based subjects together with General Paper, Project
Work and Mother Tongue Language at H1 level. This adds up to 10 academic units. One of the
content-based subjects read must be a contrasting subject.

4. Given that 4H2 subject combinations are highly rigorous, it is necessary for students who wish to
offer 4H2 subject combinations to have a L1R5 (raw score) of 11 points or better, and meet the
guidelines for relevant subjects.

5. A minimum number of 15 students has to be met for any particular subject combination or class to
be formed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FAQ 1: Where can I obtain more information on TMJC?
• JAE booklet (pp. 135 - 136). You will be able to find more information about the
programme offered by TMJC.
• The 2023 cut-off point will only be known after the release of the posting results.
• TMJC website (https://tmjc.moe.edu.sg) provides information on the subject combinations
and subject criteria offered in TMJC.

FAQ 2: What is TMJC’s cut-off point for Arts and Science?

Posting for admission to JCs/CI/Poly/ITE is done by MOE. The cut-off point for 2023 will only be
known after the posting results are released.
The cut-off points for last year (2022) may be found in pp. 102 of the JAE booklet. TMJC’s cut-off
point (after bonus points) was 13 for both Arts and Science.

FAQ 3: What subjects can I offer in a JC?

For general information on the A-Level curriculum, refer to the JAE booklet.
• Compulsory H1 subjects are General Paper, Project Work and Mother Tongue Language.
• In addition, students will choose 4 content-based subjects; either 3H2 subjects & 1H1 subject or 4 H2
subjects.
• One of the content-based subjects (either H1 or H2) must be a contrasting subject.
• H3 subjects will be offered to eligible students who have done well in the JC1 Year-End Examination.
The H3 programme will be conducted in JC2.
FAQ 4: Can I offer H2 Mathematics if I did not offer or pass O-Level Additional Mathematics?
• Yes, if you are posted to the Science stream. There is no need for you to appeal to offer H2
Mathematics during matriculation, as H2 Mathematics is recommended for Science students.
• If you did not offer and pass O-Level Additional Mathematics, you will need to learn the relevant O-Level
Additional Mathematics topics. You could consider subject combinations with H1 Mathematics as a
contrasting subject.

FAQ 5: If I am only offered combined Science at O-Level, can I offer the 2 relevant H2 Science subjects at A-
Level?
Yes. However, subject combinations which includes 2 H2 Science subjects at A-Level is rigorous in nature.
You will have to work very hard to bridge the gap between O-Level combined Science and the H2 Science
subjects. You may wish to consider offering only one H2 Science subject.

FAQ 6: Can I offer a mix of H2 Science and H2 Arts subjects?

Yes, if you are in the Science stream. Refer to the “Sci 2” and “Sci 4” subject combination series.

FAQ 7: Can I appeal to offer subjects that I am not eligible for?

Yes. After you are admitted to TMJC, you must speak with the relevant Subject Head / HOD during matriculation
to seek advice and approval. Your appeal will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

FAQ 8: Can I appeal to offer a 4 H2 subject combination if I do not meet the 4 H2 guidelines?
Yes. You may appeal in the Online Course Registration system during matriculation. Your appeal will be
considered on a case-by-case basis.

FAQ 9: Can I offer H2 Further Mathematics without sitting for the Further Mathematics diagnostic assessment?
No. Students who wish to offer H2 Further Mathematics must sit for the diagnostic assessment. This is a highly
rigorous subject which requires students to have a very strong foundation in Mathematics. The diagnostic
assessment will be an indication of suitability for offering H2 Further Mathematics.

FAQ 10: Can I offer H2 Further Mathematics if I do a 3H2 + 1H1 subject combination (e.g. FM2, MA2, PH2,
EC1)? No. 3H2 + 1H1 subject combinations which include H2 Further Mathematics are currently not offered
in the College.
