CASE BASED QUESTIONS
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES
PT-2
PASSAGE -1
A cleaned magnesium ribbon about 3-4 cm long is burnt using a
burner by holding it with a pair of tongs and the ash so formed is
collected in a watch-glass. The magnesium ribbon is kept away as
far as possible from eyes.
Answer the following questions.
a) What is the colour of the powder collected in a watch glass ? 1M
Ans: White Brilliant Colour
b) Which type of change occurs in the above experiment ? 1M
Ans: Chemical Change
c) What is the chemical name of the powder collected in a watch
glass ? 2M
Ans: Magnesium ribbon bums with a dazzling white light and
produces a white powder which is magnesium oxide.
OR
C) Does the mixture turn red litmus blue?
Ans: When Magnesium oxide is dissolved in water then resulting
solution is a base which turns red litmus to blue.
PASSAGE-2
A student took a solution of Copper sulphate in a beaker and put a clean Iron
nail into it and left it for about an hour.
Answer the following questions based on your observation of
above experiment.
a. Do you see any change in the colour of the solution? 1M
Ans: The colour of copper sulphate when an iron nail is kept in it
changes from blue to pale green.
b. Can you name the new substance formed in this
reaction? 1M
Ans: A change in which one or more new substances are
formed is called a chemical change.
c. Write a word equation for the chemical change, if any.
2M
OR
What is the product of an iron and copper sulphate
reaction?
Ans: Iron reacts with copper sulphate solution to
produce copper and ferrous sulphate.
PASSAGE-3
A solution of slaked lime produced by the reaction is used for white washing
walls. Calcium hydroxide reacts slowly with the carbon dioxide in air to form
a thin layer of calcium carbonate on the walls. Calcium carbonate is formed
after two to three days of white washing and gives a shiny finish to the
walls. It is interesting to note that the chemical formula for marble is also
CaCO3.
On the basis of above paragraph answer the following questions:
a. Can you name the new substance formed in this reaction? 1M
Ans: The solid baking soda was placed in liquid vinegar producing carbon
dioxide gas, which is evident because of the formation of bubbles in the
foaming mixture.
b. which makes lime water milky in the above reaction? 1M
Ans: Lime water turns milky, when carbon dioxide gas is passed into it.
c. Write a word equation for the chemical change, if any. 2M
Ans:
OR
c.What happens to the lime water?
Ans: Acids when reacted with sodium bicarbonate liberates carbon dioxide
gas.
