INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION AND CONTROL


(PROFESSIONAL ELECTIVE-II)

Course Outcomes: At the end of the Course, the Student will be able to
CO1: Explain the adverse effects of emissions from chemical industries and guidelines set by the
environmental protection agencies.
CO2: Select the correct air and water pollutant sampling collection method and their
measurement technique.
CO3: Describe the working principle of air pollution control equipment.
CO4: Select the appropriate treatment method required for treating waste water.
CO5: Explain different techniques for municipal solid waste and hazardous waste management.

UNIT-I 10 Lectures
Types of pollution, types of emissions from chemical industries and effects of environment,
environment legislation, Effluent guidelines and standards. Sources and characteristics of pollutants
in fertilizer, paper and pulp industry, petroleum and petroleum industry.
Learning Outcomes: After the completion of the Unit I, the student will be able to
1. Identify the types of pollutants emitting from chemical industries and their effect on the
environment (L1)
2. Summarize environmental legislation based on effluent guidelines and standards (L5)
3. Identify the sources and pollutants in fertilizer, paper & pulp industry and petroleum &
petrochemical industry (L1)

UNIT-II 10 Lectures
POLLUTANT SAMPLING AND MEASUREMENT:
Ambient air sampling: collection of gaseous air pollutants, collection of particulate air pollutants.
Stack sampling: Sampling system, particulate sampling, and gaseous sampling.
Analysis of air pollutants: Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, oxidants and Ozones,
hydrocarbons, particulate matter. Treatment of liquid and gaseous effluent in the fertilizer industry.
Learning Outcomes: After the completion of the Unit II, the student will be able to
1. Categorize ambient air sampling for gaseous pollutants and particulate pollutants (L4)
2. Demonstrate stack sampling for gaseous pollutant and particulate pollutants (L3)
3. Examine the composition of polluted air (L3)
UNIT-III 10 Lectures
AIR POLLUTION CONTROL METHODS AND EQUIPMENTS:
Source collection methods: raw material changes, process changes, and equipment modification.
Cleaning of gaseous effluents particulate emission control: collection efficiency, particulate control
equipment like gravitational settling chambers, Cyclone separators, fabric filters, ESP and their
constructional details and design aspects. Scrubbers: wet scrubbers, spray towers, centrifugal
scrubbers, packed beds and plate columns, venturi scrubbers, their design aspects.
Control of gaseous emissions: absorption by liquids, absorption equipment, adsorption by solids,
equipment and the design aspects.
Learning Outcomes: After the completion of the Unit III, the student will be able to
1. Assess air pollution control with source correction methods (L5)
2. Explain the working of air pollution control equipments (L2)
3. Demonstrate the methods of control and removal of sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and
organic vapors (L3)

UNIT-IV 10 Lectures
Characterization of effluent streams, oxygen demands and their determination (BOD, COD, and
TOC), Oxygen sag curve, BOD curve mathematical, controlling of BOD curve, self purification of
running streams, sources of wastewater. Introduction to wastewater treatment, Methods of primary
treatments: screening, sedimentation, flotation, neutralization. Biological treatment of wastewater,
bacterial and bacterial growth curve, aerobic processes, suspended growth processes, activated
aerated lagoons and stabilization ponds, Attached growth processes, trickling filters, rotary drum
filters, anaerobic processes. Methods of tertiary treatment: A brief study of carbon absorption, ion
exchange, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, chlorination, ozonation, treatment and disposal.
Learning Outcomes: After the completion of the Unit IV, the student will be able to
1. Illustrate the methods of primary treatment. (L3)
2. Explain the secondary / tertiary/biological treatment of waste water (L2)
3. Differentiate suspended growth processes and attached growth process (L2)
4. Explain the anaerobic process for wastewater treatment (L2)

UNIT-V 10 Lectures
MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE SOURCES, AND CONTROL METHODS HAZARDOUS WASTE
MANAGEMENT:
Nuclear wastes: health and environment effects, sources and disposal methods. Chemical wastes:
health and environmental effects, treatment and disposal: treatment and disposal by industry, off
site treatment and disposal, treatment practices in various countries. Biomedical wastes: types of
wastes and their control.

Learning Outcomes: After the completion of the Unit V, the student will be able to
1. Categorize the nature of solid wastes and their sources (L4)
2. Explain the sources, effects of hazardous wastes. (L2)
3. Illustrate the control methods for different wastes (L4)
