SECTION (A) - READING SKILLS [12+10=22]
1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Academics has always been an essential part of human development. It prepares us to survive
in the outside world and establish an identity of our own. However, is an individual‟s development
restricted to merely academics? In India, from an early age, we have been taught that education is
limited to the boundaries of academics only; the idea of getting out into the field, for gaining practical
experience, is always considered a hoax. This has hindered student‟s development. However, the truth
is that education represents a considerably broader field than we know of it. Our teaching, from the
basics, has been focused on getting good grades and job offers, rather than being creative and unique.
In the 21st century, the pure academic type of education is slowly paving way for a whole new
type. The paradigm shift in the whole education system is evident. People have now come to
understand that education is a 360 degree activity that should focus on student‟s overall development,
rather than restricting him/her to the classroom.
Co-curricular activities that take place outside the classroom but reinforce or supplement
classroom curriculum, in some way, have become a point of focus today. These activities help in the
growth of the child, in more than one way. Participating in such activities helps youngsters grow
mentally, socially, and individually. Intellectual development of a student is developed in the
classroom, but for the aesthetic development, such as team-building, character-building, and physical
growth, students must step out into the outside world. For instance, if a student is a part of school
football team, he/she will learn team-work and coordination, in a practical manner, which cannot be
taught in the class.
Similarly, in colleges and institutions there is a need for practical exposure so that the students
can experience the actual working of an industry. For example, taking a student to a manufacturing
firm will give him/her the real insight and better learning of the industry. Catering to this change, most
professional colleges including B-Schools have started providing practical exposure to students
through regular guest lectures, industrial visits, conferences, seminar, cultural festivals, and so on.
With industry visits, students are able to better identify their prospective areas of work in the overall
organizational function. Moreover, they help enhance interpersonal skills and communication
techniques. In addition, guest lectures are equally important for all-round development of students. It is
a great way for students to gain maximum exposure, as guest speakers talk about their real-life
experiences and not what is there in the text books.
Through such events, students are made to participate and coordinate different events wherein,
they get to know how exactly things are managed. Classroom teaching provides the foundation, and
co-curricular or extracurricular activities provide practical exposure and opportunities to implement
what students learn in the classroom. This helps in developing the overall personality of the students,
inculcating various soft skills in them, which otherwise are difficult to teach. Clearly, life beyond
academics creates creative and empowered professionals.

DIVISION OF HOUSEHOLD TASKS BY GENDER IN GREAT BRITAIN
MALES
FEMALES
The British men and women divide the household chores among themselves base on their job hours.
Men and women help each other in running the house smoothly. Some works are done mostly by
women and some interest the men more. The tasks on which women spend more time are mostly based
on cooking and cleaning. Men like to maintain the house by fixing the electricity issues or any
breakages or repairing required in the house. They also love to take care of the pets. Tidying up the
house and jobs like sewing, knitting show a remarkable difference in the men and women
participation. But both show equal participation approximately in taking care of their children.
The given chart beings out the hours spent per month on daily chares by both men and women. Some
jobs our outnumbered by men‟s active participation whereas some jobs show total dependency on the
women of the house. With the present changing times where both men and women are contributing to
the society by establishing various entrepreneurial jobs, business, official job, equally hence it is the
need of the hour for both to contribute equally in household activities as well. Gone are the days when
women were restricted only with the responsibilities of the house and men were the sole bread winners

Sir,
Subject : Primary school children carrying heavy bags/ complaining against the heavy bags of
children.
I Shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the columns of your highly esteemed
daily so that I may ventilate my opinion to draw the attention of the concerned authority about the
problem of primary school children carrying heavy school bags.
It is very often seen that primary school children are almost left with no option than to carry heavy
school bags to school these days. It is also seen that few school bags cross the carrying capacity of
school going kids. Despite all the progress in technology and science, the modern system of education
cannot come out with any other option where students do not need to carry heavy bags. As a result of
it, the children are led to painful back and neck. It is becoming a hindrance in the growth of children
mentally and physically.
I hope that the concerned authorities will take adequate and immediate steps to resolve the
issue
Thanking you
Yours Faithfully

6. GIRL EDUCATION : BETI BACHAO, BETI PADHAO
The status of Girls education has been quite unfortunate in India since time immemorial. The biases
based on gender led to this sad state of affairs. Especially in rural India girls were deprived of even
elementary education but due to various initiatives taken by the government the literacy rate for
women become 70.3% in the last census which is now expected to rise considerably in the next census.
One such initiative taken by the government of India in the year 2015 was „Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao‟.
It is not only to generate awareness about saving the girl child and the importance of girls education
but also to ensure that the welfare services meant for girls are being delivered in an efficient manner.
The scheme mainly targets the states that are low in gender ratio. This includes the state of Punjab,
Bihar, Uttar Pradesh Delhi and Uttarakhand.
(U.T)
The main objectives of the scheme are :
Focus on the prevention of gender – based sex – selective elimination
Protecting the girl child
Promoting women education and participation of the girl child.
Thanks to such initiatives, the society has at least started to realise how important it is for girls to have
access to education for their overall development. Educated women with the right skills and
knowledge have power to bring socio - economic changes in the society.

12. William Doughlas describes an incident at the Y.M.C.A swimming pool when he was about 10
or 11 years old and learning to swim. A bully threw him into the deep end of the pool and Douglas
struggled to the surface and avoid drowning. He swallowed water went to the bottom of the pool
and almost died. Douglas made several attempts to save himself but eventually became
unconscious and was rescued by someone. When, he regained consciousness he was lying outside
the pool.
This incident had an indelible impact on Douglous. For a very long time he could not overcome
the dreading fear he went through on that particular day. He had to work extremely hard to
overcome the fear which haunted many years of his life.
If I would have been in place of Doughlas, I would have been extremely afraid of swimming and
probably would have been afraid of trying also. But, as Douglas has said „Fear the fear itself‟
I would have taken inspiration from him and would have lerant swimming
Or
Ans.12 The metaphor of rattrap as elucidated by the rattrap seller compares the riches and joys in
life to a bait In the story too, it is clear that the rattrap seller had to suffer because he fell into
the bait, which was money here. The moment he does, his predicament begins. The story
highlights how and when the peddler gives back the stolen money, he achieves peace of mind and
his otherwise apparent end is averted.
A gesture of kindness can set a person free from the trap is beautifully brought out in the
chapter. Edla Willimanson is the first person who treated the peddler with kindness
regardless of knowing the truth about him. She not only tried to make his Christmas better
but also invited him for a Christmas cheer every year. Her act of kindness changed the peddler
completely inside out. The money which was of utmost importance for him was not required by
him anymore. The compassion showed by Edla made the Peddler realize the true calling of life and it
also set him free from the „baits‟ of the world.
Ans.13. The „Tiger King‟ is a brilliant example of dramatic irony. The term „dramatic irony‟ refers
to a situation in which the audience may see the full impact of a character‟s word or actions but the
character is unaware of it. The character behaves irrationally in the light of the circumstances or
expects the polar opposite of what fate has in store for him. In the story, Kalki employs a deft use of
dramatic irony. The king flaunts the dead body of the first tiger in front of the astrologer to
demonstrate that he is stronger than the tiger. The astrologer on the other hand cautions the king to
“be careful with the hundredth tiger” The king decides to prove the astrologer incorrect once more by
attempting to kill hundred tigers in a desperate attempt. Thus, in the process he believes he has
th
killed the 100 tiger by shooting at the old tiger. Howeve, the reader, as well as the king‟s officers
and subordinates quickly discover that the malnourished tiger is not murdered, but has simply
fainted. The king is pleased with himself for killing the tiger, but he is unaware of the ironic
fate that awaits him. A sliver of the wooden tigers body which was the toy of his child causes his
spectacular death. Ironically, the hundredth tiger kills the king instead, proving the astrologer‟s
predication correct.

13. One cannot count on fingers the negative aspects the modern lifestyle has to offer. There is
stress, pressure, fear insecurity & worry. In order to relieve oneself of all these miseries, one
can indulge in creative activities from time to time. Making time for yourself and what you
love without worrying about a productive outcome is a crucial thing many people tend to
ignore in the hustle and bustle of daily lives. Secondly one can read a good book or even
meditate. Long talks in the lap of nature are not to be underestimated because nature has its
own healing powers that can be very soothing for one‟s soul.Modern life being devoid of peace
and tranquility pushes the man to a quest to seek solace and makes him escape to a place where
is aim is to seek the realization of his dreams and unfulfilled wishes of his subconscious mind.
