I have a secret. It’s a secret that I have been keeping very quiet for a couple of decades now.
So quiet, in fact that in those 20+ years I have only shared it with one person. Apart from that I
have never even hinted at the existence of this secret to anyone for any reason. I consider it to
be one of my most valuable secrets, and I had been very seriously considering keeping it
entirely to myself just as I have done for more than 20 years.
But I am getting to a point in life where it no longer makes sense to ‘take it with you’, as it were.
Besides, this is a secret that I am quite certain an awful lot of people are going to get some
serious use from. So many of you out there are incredibly creative, and the thought occurred to
me awhile back that I should set this free and see where it goes. It’s quite utilitarian in nature
and as such is open to all kinds of uses. I only use it for two things. I’ll be honest with you. I

So what is it?

The physical product itself is a small booklet. But as we all know, it’s not the size of the
publication, it’s what is in the publication that counts.

This booklet describes a maneuver that I stumbled across by accident many years ago, and
built into a masterpiece of subtlety and deception.

I have gone out of my way to not perform this around other magicians and mentalists over the
years. Now in hindsight I’m not real sure why I did this. The move is practically invisible and
there’s no way to backtrack the thing. The guys wouldn’t have stood a chance anyway. But I can
tell you for a fact that for those few times when I did troop this out and other performers were in
the audience, I got extremely confused and seriously bewildered looks from these guys.

In short, I had fooled them badly.

Part of what fooled them so hard was the fact that I was using a device that they already had,
and knew how it worked. And I still fooled them badly. What they had just seen wasn’t possible
with the device in question, and yet there it was. Right before their eyes. They had just
witnessed a complete impossibility.

It is never my priority to fool ‘the boys’. My job is to entertain and fool the living crap out of
regular people. But I must say, this fools literally everyone - including ‘the boys’ - so hard that it
is most gratifying.

I know that some of you reading this are getting impatient, so let me show you, or more
accurately have you show yourself exactly what this looks like.

Go get your Sight Unseen Case and an old playing card. I’ll wait. If you don’t have an SUC,
you’re about to kick yourself (and what are you thinking, anyway?) And BTW this doesn’t work
with any of the hybrid wallets and such that have incorporated the SUC design over the years.
This only works with the SUC.

Remove everything you have in the SUC. Fold the playing card into quarters and put it into a
pocket in your SUC, sticking out of the pocket so that you can see it clearly when the case is
open. Close the case and lay it on the table.

This next part you can simply imagine if you’d like, although if you do this it will happen for real.
Take a deck of cards (imaginary in this case) and shuffle them thoroughly. Have a card selected
from a deck. Have it signed. Shuffle it back into the deck. Make your mystical gesticulations and
say your magic words.

Now do this next part for real. Open your SUC that’s sitting on the table, showing the card right
where you left it. At this point you would have your spectator remove it and unfold it, it’s their
signed card. That’s what this looks like.

That is just one possible scenario, and it’s one that I use regularly in my close up work.

The other scenario where I use this is in a mentalism context. I have an endless number of
directions I can go with this, but I’ll give you the barest bones of one. I take a business card and
write something on the back of it, fold it up and place it into my SUC, similar to the above
scenario, so that it can be seen when the case is open. I close the case and ask my helper to
name their first childhood pet. They name it. Is there any way I could possibly have known that?
Of course not. The case is opened and there is my folded business card right where I left it. The
spectator removes it, opens it and reads the back. It has the name of their first pet written on it.
They weep tears of joy at having witnessed such a miracle.

These are but two possibilities with what I have here. The true possibilities are virtually endless.
But enough talk and vagueness. Allow me to introduce you to…

The Master Move

Those of you who are a part of my Facebook SUC group (‘Sight Unseen Case Users’) already
know about this.

Back in early September of 2018 there was a thread running in the group that had branched out
into a couple of different directions (as these things tend to do) and in the course of discussion
the concept of having an entire close up mentalism act that could be contained and worked out
of the SUC came up. I mentioned that I had work on the concept and was immediately asked if
any of it was in print. The answer was no.

Let me backtrack a little. Back in 1995 I released the Sight Unseen Case. Needless to say it has
gone on to become the worldwide standard for devices of its type. A couple years after it came
out I got a call from one of the original purchasers (my dear friend Lee Marelli from Colorado)
inquiring about the possibility of adding a couple of extra internal pockets to the SUC to allow for
more storage. I didn’t see why not so I shot a note out to Roy Roth, the maker of the SUC at the
time and he was able to comply in grand style. Thus the SUC Generation II was born.

But that’s not the reason for this note.

I asked why Lee was wanting more storage space in the SUC. It would seem that he was on a
bit of a mission. He had set out to create an entire close up mentalism show that could carried
completely in the SUC, and he was running out of room. Hence the need for more pockets.

I had never considered the notion of a complete close up show in the SUC before. It’s an
intriguing idea, and a unique challenge.
This kind of thing has been done many times before, most often by magicians who desire to
carry a complete close up magic ‘set’ in their wallet. There have also been mentalists who have
tackled the same idea, building an entire show from a single, small container of some sort,
usually made of leather.

Anyway, many years ago I went to work on the subject and since that time I have gone through
many iterations and combinations of material. But it couldn’t just be a bunch of tricks that
happen to be small and flat that fit into the case.

I had (and continue to have) several considerations for this material. I wanted it all to appear to
be normal materials that a mentalist would carry. Obviously business cards are a huge part of
this, but I also wanted a variety of material. I wanted to be able to perform a complete close up
show that had a beginning, a middle and an end. The individual effects needed to vary from one
to another. No feeling of ‘sameness’ in any of them. And I wanted at least one effect to be
decidedly unique.

After years of experimentation I now have a set of material with which I am immensely pleased.
It’s a solid 30 minute close up show that works out of the SUC. I can do it as an entire formal
program if I wish or I can use any part of it that I may desire for a shorter program, or even
pieces of this program as part of a larger show. It’s very versatile. It has been most satisfying to
me personally to put this together. But until that online conversation I had never considered
putting it all together into one collection for other SUC enthusiasts. In fact the question posed to
me from the group seemed quite out of the blue and completely unexpected.

But then I got to thinking about it and I decided to go to the group and see what they thought. I
took a very informal poll and discovered that there was considerable interest in such a
publication.

So over the course of the next few days I got to work and started tracking down where I had
gotten the material that I have been using all these years to begin with. Not a simple task in a
couple of instances. That said, I was able to track most everything down and started writing.
Along the way I rediscovered some tangents that I had toyed with over the course of many
years that make me wonder why I abandoned them to begin with. But we’ve all done that
before.

As I researched and started writing it became apparent to me that this was a much bigger
project than I had anticipated, in no small part because I kept adding things in. I finally had to
draw the line or else lose sight of the project altogether!

The entire process was exhilarating and exciting in ways that I had never considered before.
And I couldn’t possibly be happier with the final result. It’s a book that was well over 20 years in
the making and represents a very unique and distinctive addition to the literature, not only of the
legendary Sight Unseen Case, but of mentalism in general. While this basic idea has been

I have an almost unhealthy obsession with a very simple plot, and over the years I have
published a small handful of solutions. But of all the solutions that I have come up with for this
plot, the one used here is my all-time favorite.

What plot is it?

Predicting the outcome of five random events. All five events are the same, but they can each
come out one of two different ways. In this case, a simple coin flip.

So here's a very nifty effect that is custom designed to go with your SUC, either model. The
effect is straight forward and easy to do.

The performer displays a small envelope contained inside his business card case. This is left in
plain sight. A spectator volunteers a coin and it is flipped in the air five times, noting how many
times heads and tails each come up. When everything is said and done, the envelope is
removed from the business card case and shown to contain a small white card. Written plainly
and clearly is the outcome of those five random coin flips!

FAQ’s about the SUC -

Q. Does the SUC work as a ‘card in wallet’?

A. The SUC is specifically designed as a business card case, not a regular wallet. As such it is
designed to hold business cards, which are a bit smaller than regular playing cards. That
being said, bridge size cards do fit in the SUC. Poker size cards are a bit too large to be
really practical, although they DO fit, snugly.
Q. Is the SUC available in any other colors?
A. At this time there are no plans to release the SUC in any color other than black. Many
years ago the SUC was offered in a burgundy color as well as black, and perhaps
someday, if there is sufficient interest, we will pursue that once again. But for there
foreseeable future the only color will be black for both models of the case.

Q. Are the metal reinforced corners available in any color other than a gold (brass) color?
A. The reinforced corners on the case are available only in brass and are not available in a
nickel silver color. Trust me, guys, no one cares if the corners match your personal
accessories. Jeeez. (Yes, I really HAVE been asked this question, more than once.)

Q. Can the SUC be handled by a spectator?

A. I hand mine to spectators all the time. Obviously I only do this in situations where it is
completely safe to do so and I place no heat on the case whatsoever. But the case can be
casually handled by your spectator without fear of anything being found amiss.

Q. How ‘invisible’ is the peek on the SUC?

A. ALL peeks, no matter how they are being done, require that the performer actually look
directly at the image that is being peeked. Just as is true of any peek, if a spectator is in a
position to basically see what you are seeing, and if there is not sufficient misdirection
being used they will be able to see what you are seeing. This is true of any device or peek
of any kind. There is no truly invisible peek in and of itself. All peeks require that the
performer use audience management skills, misdirection, verbal cues and more to cover
the action.

Q. How much of the image can be peeked using the SUC?

A. Roughly 80-85% of the business card can be plainly visible when it is in peek position.
Getting a spectator to write or draw on the card in such a way that you can easily see
everything is a very simple task, and there are endless means to accomplish this, some of
which are detailed in the accompanying manuscript.

Q. Can the case be handled by a spectator when a business card is in peek position?
A. It is possible, but your audience managements skills need to be very good. In the right
situation and with proper motivation and misdirection there is no problem, however.

Q. Which one is better? The original SUC or the Generation II?

A. Neither. The only difference between the two cases is the addition of two extra pockets
inside the Generation II. That’s it. Absolutely nothing else. No other functions. No other
hidden goodies. Two extra pockets and that’s all. What these extra pockets allow for,
mostly, is extra storage space. Meaning simply, you can carry a bit more stuff in your case.
If you are one to carry loads of individual effects that are flat and extremely portable, the
Generation II might be a good one for you purely because you can have a bit of extra
storage space inside it. By that same token, I can tell you for a fact that performer’s like
Garrett Thomas use the original SUC exclusively because he wants to be able to easily
show that there is nothing inside the case except for his prediction (or whatever). Having
extra pockets means slowing things down in performance to do the extra proving. So take
your pick. Both versions of the SUC work exactly the same way. In fact I know of many
performers who use both versions of the case, each for a different reason like what Garrett
does, as well as having a case that has extra stuff in it.
Q. Does the SUC look ‘gimmicky’?
A. The SUC is patterned directly after an actual business card case, purchased right off the
shelf from a local office supplies emporium. It is the exact same size and style. Obviously
there is some modification from what I purchased off the shelf, but there is absolutely
nothing that looks out of place in any way. It can be viewed from any angle and it looks
completely normal. There are tons of guys literally all over the world who use their SUC as
their everyday business card case. It looks perfectly at home in any business or social
situation and will never, ever raise even the slightest suspicion. It’s practically invisible it is
so normal looking. See the pics included with this write up.
