Essay Text

Some of the greatest challenges in life are the ones that are closest to your heart. My greatest challenge
has been having to watch as one of the most important people to me losing life’s battle. This person is my
maternal grandma who was first diagnosed with breast cancer requiring a double mastectomy, then
dyspnea necessitating an oxygen tank, and now Alzheimer’s followed most recently by a heart attack
resulting in pacemaker surgery. When my mother told me what the doctor had said about my grandma, I
was in shock but at the same time, I didn’t react to it because I guess it hadn’t sunk in yet. She is and has
always been the one person in my life that I knew I could always count on, who could cheer me up just
by hugging me or singing one of the songs she had sung to me when I was a baby. I loved it when she
would joke around with me or when she would cook something special for me. She made me feel like
when I stepped into her house that all my problems would go away because I could just be the happy,
energetic kid that I’ve always been and she greatly encouraged that.

The beginning was not that hard but later on, she began to have these episodes. One summer day, my
mom was at work and she left me at my grandma’s house to help the caretaker with my grandma and my
aunt, who has Down syndrome. That afternoon my grandma had one of the biggest “episodes” ever and I
had to try to calm her down but she began yelling at me, put me in the bedroom, and closed the door.
When I tried to open the door, she grabbed the handle and closed it shut, and yelled “No!” Shortly
thereafter, I was able to open the door and walk outside to calm myself down because a part of me was
angry but knew that I couldn’t be angry at her because she didn’t know what she was doing but the other
part of me wanted to just cry. For me, this was the moment that I realized that the loving grandmother I
grew up with wasn’t going to be there anymore.

Although we continue to take care of her, it’s very hard to watch her change so much in so little time. My
mom hasn’t talked with me about how it makes me feel, which is understandable because I know this is
hard on her. Fortunately, I have been able to talk to and have the support of my dad. I know, in their
own way, they are trying to be strong and try to help me just enjoy even the simple moments we don’t
want to let pass us by. I wish I could say that it’s been easy but it hasn’t been especially since she’s only
gotten worse and I feel so helpless because for all the times that I’ve helped other people, the one person
I wanted to help the most, I couldn’t. It makes me cry even more when I think about how she’s been
acting recently, about how I can't even remember the last time she said my name but when I say hi to
her in the morning, I can see in her eyes, all the love she has for me, even if she can’t remember who I
am.

Due to this experience, I learned that I shouldn’t take things and people for granted because eventually,
life does change even if you don’t want it to. Another thing that I learned from this experience is that I
have a strong passion for helping people because I get so much pride from doing so. I didn’t get this
feeling from just her but she inspired this part of me and I will always be grateful for that.
