PASSAGE 1: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions from 01 to 05.
As a result of globalisation, the world is becoming more and more connected. This has changed people's
way of life, beliefs, art and customs, or their culture, in many respects. Although people's experiences around
the world have become very similar, globalisation has also encouraged cultural diversity. Below are some
examples.
Fast food chains and international restaurants have become popular, offering a wide range of dishes and
more food choices to local people. For example, here in Viet Nam, we can enjoy Italian pizza or Japanese sushi,
in addition to our traditional food. Moreover, some international dishes use local ingredients, which make them
unique and more suitable to local tastes. On the other hand, Vietnamese specialties, such as pho and banh mi,
are also gaining popularity worldwide.
Thanks to globalisation, people can quickly discover new music from all over the world. People
nowadays enjoy listening to music from different countries and cultures, and in different languages. For
example, American teens are captivated by K-pop music and dance. There are also many music festivals
around the globe that bring artists and music fans together. In today's connected world, it is very common for
musicians across the world to work on music projects and share ideas together.
Globalisation has also impacted fashion by opening it up to a variety of styles and influences from
around the world. Cross-cultural styles that blend both traditional and modern elements are on the rise. This
presents opportunities for fashion designers to be creative and reflect the cultural richness of the world. It is now
easier for people to keep up with fashion trends from different cultures and regions, and express their identities
in new and exciting ways.
In conclusion, globalisation has helped strengthen cultural diversity in the world and made people
appreciate different cultures and lifestyles.

A large number of inventions require years of arduous research and development before they are
perfected. For instance, Thomas Edison had to make more than 1,000 attempts to invent the incandescent light
bulb before he finally succeeded. History is replete with numerous other examples of people trying, yet failing
to make inventions before they eventually succeeded. Yet some inventions have come about not through hard
work but simply by accident in most cases, when someone unintentionally invented something, the inventor was
attempting to create something else. For example, in the 1930s, chemist Roy Plunkett was attempting to make a
new substance that could be used to refrigerate items. He mixed some chemicals together. Then, he put them
into a pressurized container and cooled the mixture. By the time his experiment was complete, he had a new
invention. It was not a new substance that could be used for refrigeration though. Instead, he had invented
Teflon, which is today most commonly used to make nonstick pots and pans. Similarly, decades earlier, John
Pemberton was a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia. He was attempting to create a tonic that people could use
whenever they had headaches. While he was not successful in that endeavor, he managed to invent Coca-Cola,
the world - famous carbonated soft drink.
Scientists have also made crucial discoveries by accident when they were conducting experiments. In
1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, an antibiotic in this manner. He discovered some mold growing
in a dish with some bacteria. He noticed that the bacteria seemed to be avoiding the mold. When he investigated
further, he determined some of the many useful properties of penicillin, which has saved millions of lives over
the past few decades. Likewise, in 1946, scientist Percy Spencer was conducting an experiment with
microwaves. He had a candy bar in his pocket, and he noticed that it suddenly melted. He investigated and
learned the reason why that had happened. Soon afterward, he built a device that could utilize microwaves to
heat food, the microwave oven.

Wozniak, who was five years older than him, but they bonded over their love of electronics. After high
school, Jobs attended Reed College in Oregon, but found the classes boring and dropped out after six
months.
When Jobs was 21, he and Wozniak started Apple Computers in Jobs' family garage with money they got
by selling Jobs' van and Wozniak's scientific calculator. By making computers smaller, cheaper, and

invent new products such as the iMac, the iBook for students, the iPod music player, and iTunes music
software. In 2007, he introduced the touch-screen iPhone which changed the way phones were used. Apple
products were not only designed to be cutting-edge technology, but also to be stylish and easy to use. In
addition, Jobs contributed to computer animation. In 1986, he bought a small company, which later became
Pixar Animation Studios. It produced the first full-length computer-animated film Toy Story, followed by
other blockbusters.
In 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer. He fought the disease for several
years, and stopped working in August, 2011. Two months later, he passed away. He had four children, three

PASSAGE 4: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions
Joyce Carol Oates published her first collection of short stories, By The North Gate, in 1963, two years
after she had received her master's degree from the University of Wisconsin and become an instructor of
English at the University of Detroit. Her productivity since then has been prodigious, accumulating in less than
two decades to nearly thirty titles, including novels, collections of short stories and verse, play and literary
criticism. In the meantime, she has continued to teach, moving in 1967 from the University of Detroit to the
University of Windsor, in Ontario, and, in 1978, to Princeton University Reviewers have admired her enormous
energy, but find a productivity of such magnitude difficult to assess.
In a period characterized by the abandonment of so much of the realistic tradition by authors such as
John Barth, Donald Barthelme, and Thomas Pynchon, Joyce Carol Oates has seemed at times determinedly old-
fashioned in her insistence on the essentially mimetic quality other fiction. Hers is a world of violence, insanity,
Fractured love, and hopeless loneliness. Although some of it appears to come from her own direct observations,
her dreams, and her fears, much more is clearly from the experiences of others. Her first novel With
Shuddering Fall (1964), dealt with stock car racing, though she had never seen a race. In Them (1969) she
focused on Detroit from the Depression through the riots of 1967, drawing much of her material from the deep
impression made on her by the problems of one of her students. Whatever the source and however shocking the
events or the motivations, however, her fictive world remains strikingly akin to that real one reflected in the
daily newspapers, the television news and talk shows, and popular magazines of our day.

A. To review Oates' By the North Gate B. To compare some modern writers
C. To outline Oates career D. To describe Oates' childhood
2. Which of the following does the passage indicate about Joyce Carol Oates' first publication?
A. It was not successful B. It was a volume of short fiction
C. It was part of her master's thesis. D. It was about an English instructor in Detroit
3. The word "fictive" in the passage is closest in meaning to ____.
A. imaginary B. attractive C. helpful D. impressive
4. What was the subject of Joyce Carol Oates' first novel?
A. Loneliness B. Racing C. Teaching D. Insanity
5. Which of the following would Joyce Carol Oates be most likely to write?
A. A romance novel set in the nineteenth century B. A story with an unhappy ending
C. A dialogue for a talk show D. A science fiction novel
