Answer question number one (1) and other question from this section.
1. Carefully study the map extract of Arusha (Sheet 55/3) provided and then answer the
following questions.
(a) i) Calculate the distance covered by road in kilometers (km) from grid reference
400285 to 373330 ii) Write the given scale of map
into statement scale.
(b) Measure the total area covered by whole map in square kilometres (km) by using
geometrical method.
(c) A bus driver was travelling along Mbeya -Iringa road covering a distance of 10cm a
map in 30minutes, the speed of a bus was 50km/hr.
i) Calculate the distance covered by a bus driver in kilometre.
ii) If the speed changed to 200km/hr what will be its distance.
iii) Find its statement scale.
(d) A surveyor recording 87° as his forward bearing (FB) from Mafinga Mission to
Mafinga Military camp and 263° was recorded as his Back bearing (BB). i) Correct
the discrepancy of this readings ii) State the importance of Back bearing
iii) Explain the principles for corrections of forward and back bearing
(e) With evidence(s), suggest two possible types soil found on the given mapped area.
(f) i) Assess the drainage system found on the given map.
ii) Describe three (3) influence of scale on topographical map
2. (a) What does it meant by Experimental Research Design?
(b) Despite the merits, Field research has got some disadvantages. Discuss
3. Prismatic compass surveys directly involves measuring and recording angles on the
surface of the earth and express them in form of degree but surveyors do encounter
with several discrepancies which cause confusion among surveyors and land owners.
As a form six student, describe in briefly four limitations of using compass survey and
suggest any three measures to avoid the discrepancies that occur in prismatic compass
survey.
SECTION B (60 marks)
Answer three (3) questions from this section.
4. A geography teacher of St. Ann’s Girls Seminary prepared a study tour to visit Kidatu
dam that is surrounded by several hills and rocks which are resistant to all processes
which are responsible for modification of land forms on the surface of the earth. As
form six student examine the determinant factors that control rocks to resist against
weathering, surface run-off and erosion
5. The large part of our living planet is covered for about 71% of water which is termed
as lakes, sea, ocean, rivers, dams, swamps and ice and plays a significant role in all
spheres of human life. With aid of diagrams classify lakes due to earths movement,
glacial erosional and glacial depositional. Six points, with two logics per each notion.
6. Mr. Daudi is among of the farmers from Geita District. For several years, he has been
observing the soils that keep on changing day to day in terms of color and structure due
to different systems involved in. You as a pedologist provide six (6) logics as to why
soil is referred as an open system basing on the input factors within the soil system.
7. The marine tropical climate found between 5°-15º North and South of Equator,
particularly in the East coast of Brazil and Eastern coast of Madagascar is formed due
to the influence of onshore trade winds, which influence evergreen trees making a
forest to be complex due to high rainfall between 1000mm-2000mm. Apart from the
mentioned above, describe the main features of vegetation found in rainforest regions.
