Intro to Unmanned Aircraft HW #1

Underneath Cheyenne mountain there is a secret military base that

houses the Stargate program. The Stargate is a device that has the ability to
open a one way matter stream, or wormhole, to another planet within the
Milky Way galaxy. A special team, designated SG1, is tasked with exploring
the other end of the wormhole. In order to protect SG1 from unknown
potential threats, the destination needs to be surveyed before SG1 steps
through the Stargate. In order to properly survey the undiscovered area, a
UAV will be launched through the Stargate.

This UAV will be a fixed wing aircraft designed for reconnaissance and
surveillance. This aircraft will need to be equipped with cameras, LIDAR,
infrared sensors, a barometer, a thermometer, a spectrometer, and a laser to
“paint” an object for missiles to target, assuming the other side is hostile.
The cameras and LIDAR systems will transmit imaging data back through the
wormhole to Stargate Command. The LIDAR systems will also allow Stargate
Command to map the topography of the area around the destination
stargate and scan through dense foliage. Infrared will allow for the tracking
of hostiles and locate populations around the stargate. The barometer,
thermometer, and spectrometer are needed to determine if the planet SG1
ends up on is hospitable to human life. The barometer will measure the
atmospheric pressure, the thermometer will measure the ambient
temperature, and the spectrometer will measure the chemical make up of
the atmosphere and determine if the air is breathable.

The UAV will not have a large runway to get up to speed and the air
density on the other side of the wormhole has not yet been determined,
therefore, the UAV will have to be placed on a ramp and outfitted with rocket
boosters to reach a high velocity quickly. Once the UAV breaches through
matter stream, it will immediately begin transmitting the data collected back
to Stargate Command. It will fly out and make repeated sweeps around
immediate area and be remotely piloted to investigate any points of interest
determined by Stargate Command. Stargate Command may also set up
missiles to be launched through Stargate and use the UAV to “paint” targets,

Once the data has been collected, the UAV will begin its return flight. It
will use its cameras to line up with the Stargate and begin decelerating. Back
at Stargate Command, a recovery net and ramp will be set up to recover the
UAV safely, assuming that it was not destroyed on the mission. Using the
data recovered from the UAV, Stargate Command will be able to determine if
SG1 can step through the Stargate and if any special equipment is required
for the health and safety of SG1.
