Motivation Letter

Mahmoud Eslam Ahmed Elbadawy

January 2022

Dear sir/madam,

I am Mahmoud E. Elbadawy who has recently graduated in July 2021 from the German
University in Cairo (GUC), Cairo, Egypt, Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering. Since I
enrolled in the university, I witnessed new different levels of technologies and observed that
nearly everything could be turned into smart which gave me the notion to try this out in my room
at home. Consequently, with my limited knowledge and capabilities at that time, I became more
motivated to study how those things work. Thus, I started taking courses, self-learning, and
asking my professors for more materials and references. All my inquiries introduced me to what
is called “Embedded Systems” which triggered the spark that took me to the decision to immerse
more and more in it, reaching the absolute desire and dream to do my master’s degree
specifically in the field of Embedded Systems.

Therefore, getting the privilege to pursue the master’s degree in the Computer Science
program at Siegen University in Embedded Systems major will increase my knowledge deeply.
As a result, will make me more qualified and proficient in my future career. This opportunity will
give me the credit to participate in real-life projects in all aspects related to Embedded Systems
from smart homes and technologies to Automotive fields. Also, the dream to transfer what I have
learned during my whole life to other passionate students will not only come true but also will
make it more reliable throughout this program.

Since I started my bachelor’s study, I found myself gravitating more towards the courses
related to Embedded Systems starting from studying Computer Architecture, Operating Systems,
Microprocessors, and Digital System Design which emphasized the prior tendency to discover
more about this field. The Computer Science department held a lot of programming courses that
not only contributed to boosting my programming skills but also assisted me in problem-solving
and decision-making. Each course pushed me a step forward through the embedded systems
career ladder to give me the chance to do individual and group projects using many different
hardware kits. Moreover, it qualified me to professionally utilize the software using the acquired
programming skills in order to make the most use of the appropriate hardware devices and
microcontrollers.

On the other hand, as a continuation of the gained teamwork skills, I have led my
colleagues during an Embedded Systems course offered at the university achieving the excellent
grade of “A+” to build a modern-day vehicle implementing safety and entertainment features.
Then I turned to take an Embedded Systems diploma for more than four months covering high-
and low-level languages, Embedded C, and interfacing. Thus, I could visualize my effort and the
extended research when I was doing my bachelor thesis In Robotics and Embedded Systems
getting an “A+” grade. After graduating I studied an Automotive and Embedded Systems Diploma
for 5 months to enrich my experience and learn more about AUTOSAR, Tooling, Layered
Architecture, Testing, in addition to learning how to simulate the exact hardware components
using software applications.

In my journey, I was assisted and influenced by my professors, teacher assistants, and

colleagues. So, I decided to do the same for the next generation’s students and share with them
my own experience. Therefore, I volunteered as a Junior Teacher Assistant in a Summer
Robotics Camp at the German International University (GIU), Cairo, Egypt, to teach freshmen
“Robotics” and “Embedded Systems” through real-life applications by supplying them with all
needed components to build their own robots. I also assisted in maintaining robots and utilizing
educational kits to be as effective as they could be to ease the learning process for those
students. Moreover, while doing the second diploma, I worked with students struggling with their
bachelor thesis so I took the responsibility to help them and do exactly as my professors had
done for me by guiding them to reach the optimal solutions. Thereby, I believe that the obtained
experiences and skills during my whole life in the educational and industrial fields will certainly
qualify me to compete in your program.

I always strongly believe that the quality of education is one of the most important aspects
anyone should consider while choosing a country to study in. That was the reason why I
specifically chose Germany after I had the chance to meet the German Ambassador in Egypt, Dr.
Cryill Nunn during his visit to the German International University (GIU) Campus. At that point, I
observed how greatly they appreciated and supported the quality of education. Besides, in
Germany, I can have many opportunities to do internships and work in a lot of companies,
especially in the Embedded Systems field. What’s more, I chose the University of Siegen
because of the tremendous effort it exerts to enlighten students from various backgrounds to be
well informed about the recent courses in all university’s faculties and how a student could be
guided through the whole program semesters under the supervision of many professional
professors. Beyond that, the Computer Science program is full of a lot of interesting modules in
either the focus of Visual Computing or Embedded Systems, which will definitely widen my
experience, improve my programming skills, and take me to a higher level of mastery and more
understanding of diverse Embedded Systems aspects.

To bring it to an end, getting the chance to join this program will help me to achieve my
future plans in order to continue getting deeper into the field of Embedded Systems since I desire
to extend my master’s degree to a PH.D. The degree to make it more reliable and effective when
I teach my own students all that I have learned and share with them the gained experience from
the academic and industrial fields beside the German culture after returning to my country of
origin. Finally, I would be more than glad if I got accepted and had the chance to be on board and
I would strongly like to thank you for reviewing my application. I am looking forward to hearing
from you.

Respectfully yours,
Mahmoud Elbadawy
