My six-year-old granddaughter, Caitlynd, and I stopped at a bakery for some bread. As

we were going out the door, a young teenage boy was coming in.

This young man had no hair on the sides of his head and some blue hair on top of it.

One of his nostrils was pierced ( 穿孔), and his ears were full of rings. He held a skateboard

under one arm and a basketball under ____37____. Caitlynd, who was walking ahead of me,

stopped when she saw the teen.

I thought he’d scared her and she’d frozen on the spot. I was wrong. My Grand Angel

backed up against the door and opened it as ____38____ as it would go. Now I was face to

face with the young man. I stepped aside and let him pass. His response was a kind “Thank

you very much”.

differences was in order, I wanted to be ready.

It ____41____ that the person who needed the talk was me. The only thing Caitlynd

noticed about the teen, was the fact that his arms were full. “He would’ve had a hard time

to open the door.” I saw the partially shaved head, the blue hair, the piercings and the

earrings. She saw a person carrying something under each arm and heading toward a door.

I’m always the one who is so quick to judge. In the future, I hope to get down on her

The advertising has gone on for years: Smart homes are now available. There are coffee

pots that turn on when the alarm clock rings. There are fridges that send an alert when the

milk runs out. These smart home appliances are greatly c____43____ our lives.

However, it seems f____44____ people are making their homes smart. According to a

U.S. survey, only six percent of American families have a smart appliance. So why are smart

home appliances having a hard time reaching the market? We think there are several

r____45____.

First, a lot of smart appliances are just fun. Their new features are not really

n____46____. Many of these appliances are too expensive. One of Samsung’s smart fridges

has cameras inside of it. It can allow the user to know what he is short of while he is

shopping. However, the fridge sells for $5,000. People who can a____47____ it probably

don’t do their own shopping. For the rest of us, we r____48____ check the food in our fridges,

Besides the technology is not yet perfect. There are complaints that smart appliances

sometimes stop working or become “dull”. There is also a lack of standards( 标准). As a result,

appliances from d____49____ companies cannot “communicate” with each other.

Do you look forward to a smart home? Are you willing to pay for smart appliances?

Answer the questions (根据短文,回答下列问题)

During summer vacations, I would volunteer at the vet’s, so I’d seen a lot of dogs.

Minnie was by far the funniest-looking dog I’d ever seen. Thin curly hair barely covered her

sausage-shaped body. Her big eyes always looked surprised. And her tail looked like a rat’s.

She was brought to the vet to be put to sleep because her owners didn’t want her

anymore. But I thought Minnie had a sweet personality. “No one should judge her by her

looks,” I thought. So instead of putting her to sleep, the vet gave her the chance to be

adopted (收养) by someone else. I advertised Minnie in the local paper: “Funny-looking dog,

well behaved, needs a loving family.”

When a young man called, I warned him that Minnie was strange looking. The boy on

the phone told me that his grandfather’s 16-year-old dog had just died. They wanted Minnie

no matter what it looked like. I gave Minnie a good bath. Then we waited for them to arrive.

At last, an old car drove up in front of the vet’s. Two kids ran to the door. They took

Minnie to their grandfather, who was waiting in the car. I hurried behind them to see his

reaction to Minnie.

The grandfather carried Minnie in his arms and touched her soft hair. She licked ( 舔) his

face. It was love at first lick.

“She’s perfect!” the old man said excitedly.

I was thankful that Minnie had found the good home that she deserved.

That’s when I saw that the grandfather’s eyes were a milky white color---he was blind.
