 DISTRICT VETERINARY OFFICER: Veterinary Services Division, Department of Agriculture


Kwahu East District- Abetifi, Eastern Region November, 2018 to August, 2022
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Administration; Supervision and coordination of veterinary activities in the District, and


correlation with adjoining Districts, the Regional and National Offices.
 Policy Advocacy & Advisory; Recommendation of strategies and policies with grave animal and
public health advantages and benefits to political, economic, and social institutions and
authorities, as well as informing and influencing valued decision-making by the same.
 Policy Implementation; Enforcing and ensuring government’s policies on animal production and
health, is rolled out, implemented, undertake and sustained successfully to yield expected
results, to ensure food security, alleviate poverty and improve livelihood.
 Reporting; Drafting, writing and submission of monthly, quarterly and annual situational reports
to the District Assembly, and Regional Directorates of Veterinary Services, Animal Production
and MoFA, for onward submission to the National Directorates, and subsequently to World
Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
 Collaborations; Working hand-in-hand with other sectors and institutions; Health, Security,
Education, Religious groups, Traditional Leaders, Environmental Health & Sanitation, Hospitality,
etc.), to promote Public Health and significantly achieve the ‘One Health’ Goal.
 Animal Welfare; Educating farmers on good husbandry and management practices, including
improved nutritional techniques.
 Food safety & Public Health; Meat hygiene and inspection (ante & post-mortem) at the
slaughter house to ensure only wholesome meat passes to the market to ensure public safety.
Education on safe use of antimicrobials, especially antibiotics.
 Disease Prevention & Control; Field and Clinical Epidemiology (Disease Surveillance) to
determine the disease situations in communities as well as undertaking mass vaccination
programs to avert the onset of vaccine-preventable zoonotic and non-zoonotic diseases.
 Animal Health Improvement; Field and clinical procedures ensuring sick animals are treated and
cared for to get well thus elevating the percentage of healthy animals in the pets and livestock
population.
 Regulatory; Controlling and restricting animal movement from one location to another to
prevent disease inception into the latter. Taking of census of animals.
 Public Education; reaching out to community dwellers (urban, peri-urban & rural), giving them
information and updates on emerging and re-emerging zoonotic and non-zoonotic disease;
prevention & control, treatment(s), post exposure management, etc. Thus, ‘Public Education for
Healthy Outcomes.’
