Read the following important information and indicate that you have
read, understand, and agree to follow the ELC's policies about
Attendance, Plagiarism, Moodle, UM email and other important issues.
You should remember that you are unlikely to receive a grade if you do
not follow the policies.
I. Language policy
Think of your English classrooms, the hallways and the ELC itself as
“English speaking zones.” Your English will only improve if you USE it,
so use English when in your English classes and when speaking with
your teachers and classmates. You should use English at all times in
class and during ELC activities.
III. Absences
PLEASE inform your teacher (in advance) if you must be away from
class for any reason. Note that, if you are absent without
permission for 10% of your ELC class sessions, you will receive
a warning. If you miss more than 20% of your ELC classes
without permission, you will receive a failing grade for that
course. If the course is compulsory or a prerequisite for another
course, you will need to retake the failed course before moving on in
your program of study. Please see university policy regarding
attendance and absence (published in UM Academic Calendar). Make
sure you understand your teacher’s attendance policy. In general, you
will be counted tardy if you arrive more than 5 minutes after class
begins, and “absent” if you arrive more than 15 minutes late or leave
more than 15 minutes early. Note: You must apply for leave prior to
your absence, or within two days of your return to class. Leave
application forms are available for download on the ELC website or go
to the ELC main office to request and submit a leave application.
III.
You must bring textbooks to each class. Please understand that illegal
photocopying of textbooks is against copyright law. Please purchase
and bring legal textbooks to ELC classes. Photocopied books are not
legal and must not be used in class.
IV.
V. Plagiarism
Any time you use someone else’s words or ideas, you must give credit
by listing your source using the format required by your teacher. If you
copy from someone else without giving credit, that is considered
plagiarism. If you plagiarize, you will be warned and your grade will be
affected. If you continue, an official letter will be sent to you and to
your faculty. Always list your sources and use quotation marks when
taking words or ideas from someone else. Do not use AI software for
completing projects and assignments unless directed to do so by your
teacher.
Food and drink: Unless your teacher explicitly gives permission, you
are not allowed to eat food during language classes as this means you:
1) cannot talk or fully participate in class and 2) are a distraction to
others. You may bring water or another beverage to class but
remember to keep the desk area clean.
VII.
