AI Applications in the Telecommunications
Industry
The telecom sector has experienced several mechanization phases. Automated hardware came to
change the manual way that was switching cables in order to exchange data. They no longer need
specific hardware since there are vitually defined though a software, thus providing faster and better
decision making , utilizing expert knowledge more efficiently and effective handling of repetitive task.AI
applications can operate autonomously through autonomous learning and action, with scenarios ranging
from closed-loop systems to human-in-the-loop interactions. Besides the fact that telecom
infrastructures are vital to society, more and more applications depend on well-functioning, reliable, and
always available telecom services.
Most of the current AI applications focus on improving specific parameters. These are strictly defined
applications such as:
1. Enhancing the Parameters of a Radio Signal
Currently AI is used to optimize data flow to and from a basic station in mobile network. The distance to
users ,connected users and certain environmental factors determine the radio parameters. AI is
essential for helping CSPs build self-optimizing networks (SONs) to support this growth. These allow
operators to automatically optimize network quality based on traffic information by region and time
zone. They determine the maximum amount of data that can be transmitted per unit of time. To
maximize efficiency, algorithms are being used to dynamically determine what part of the spectrum
should be used for which user and with which parameters.
2. Power Management
Machine learning techniques are used to achieve power savings in live mobile networks.
Based on meteorological data, the number of users, and their position, antennas actively
adjust their radiation pattern, direction, and strength to demand. This results in energy
saving. for example, during the night when data demand is relatively low and in more
efficient use of the base stations because a larger surface area can be operated at set-up
points where the need for capacity is not uniform.
3. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) for Telecoms
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a form of business process automation technology based on AI.
RPA can bring greater efficiency to telecom functions by allowing telcos to more easily manage their
back-office operations and large volumes of repetitive and rules-based actions. RPA frees up CSP
staff for higher value-add work by streamlining the execution of complex, labor-intensive, and time-
consuming processes, such as billing, data entry, workforce management, and order fulfillment.
Telecom, media, and tech companies expect cognitive computing to “substantially transform” their
companies within the next few years.
4. Fraud Prevention
