INTRODUCTION

This School based Assessment is an investigation on the level of awareness of the

residents of Bay View, La Romaine in relation to the human Immunodeficiency
virus commonly referred to as HIV. HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s
immune system. When HIV is not treated, it can progress to Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome also called AIDS. There is currently no cure for HIV
or AIDS. Once a person is infected it is a lifelong disease. However with proper
medical care and compliance with medications, this can be controlled. People who
are HIV positive and compliant with prescribed treatment can live long, healthy
lives and protect their partners. However not all people are aware of this disease
and what it entails, Thus the information gathered in this School based Assessment
can be used to identify level of awareness of persons in the community and can
also be used to implement various initiatives to increase or raise awareness about
the disease.

3
REASON FOR AREA SELECTION

Bay View originally was a plantation area which has now been developed into a
residential community and home to many people of la Romain. There are two
secondary schools, many residential areas. It is located on the outskirts of San
Fernando, also in very close proximity to stores, hospitals, malls etc. As a
resident it was of interest to me to understand the level of knowledge and
awareness that fellow residents have on the topic of AIDS and HIV as this is a
lifestyle disease and can be prevented.

STATEMENT PROBLEM

Investigating the level of awareness about Aids (HIV) of the residents of my

community of Bayview, La romaine.

4
METHOD OF INVESTIGATION
In order to collect data from the survey, We have decided to use printed
questionnaires.

The questionnaire as a tool for collecting data has a number of advantages:

● It requires little time to be completed.
● It can be done at the convenience of the person required to have it completed
● It guarantees confidentiality since respondents are not required to attach
their names

PROCEDURES USED TO COLLECT DATA

Bayview has approximately 175 households. It was calculated that a sample

of 20% was necessary in order to ensure accurate conclusions on the

awareness level of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

(20% of 175 = 35)

A total of 35 questionnaires were prepared for distribution to the villages. It

was expected that at least 20 of these will be returned.

I therefore decided to choose the households by a process of random

selection. The numbers of all houses in the village were written, each on a

slip of paper. Each slip of paper was folded and placed into a box. The box

was closed and shaken vigorously to ensure a thorough mixture of the

numbers. A total of 35 slips were then drawn from the box, one at a time,

while shaking the box in the process.

The thirty-five households thus selected were then supplied with

questionnaires. In instances where members were not at home, the

questionnaires were left in the mail box with a note to return the completed

questionnaire to my mailbox.

28
INTERPRETATION OF DATA

In doing my survey of Bayview, out of 30 persons, 15 were male and 15 were

women. In the information gathered from Figure 1 and Figure 2 it is revealed that a

total of 76.7% of participants are well educated on AIDS(HIV) and 23.3% are not

well educated With 63.3% of participants only hearing about it via the news,

13.3% heard from school, 10.0% heard from their household, 6.7% heard from the

internet and the remainder 6.7% haven't heard. It is to be known that hearing about

AIDS(HIV) is not the same as being educated on the topic; education on the topic

means the individuals know about prevention methods, symptoms etc, while

hearing about AIDS(HIV) means that individual knows what AIDS(HIV) but isnt

fully aware of its prevention methods, symptoms etc

Age group of persons who were involved in the questionnaire, out of 100%, the

highest number of respondents came from the ages 30-39 which accompanied 21

persons (70% ) The second highest count came from ages 40+ which accompanied

5 persons ( 17%). Finally the lowest count came from 20-29 which accompanied 4

persons (13%).

29
In figure 3 shows what age group participants believe are affected by AIDS(HIV)

the most. It can be observed that out of the 30 participants, 25(83%) participants

believe ages 21 - 30 are most affected by AIDS HIV. 2 (7%) believe ages 18 - 21

are most affected by Aids HIV. Finally 3(10%) believe ages 60+ are most affected

by AIDS HIV.

In figure 4 it can be observed that 0% of participants have taken part in any

educational programs that talk about AIDS(HIV).

Figure 5 shows ideas participants came up with that the Ministry of Health can use

to help with preventing the spread of AIDS(HIV). The most recommended idea

was “Spreading awareness of AIDS(HIV) and prevention methods” which was

recommended by 24 persons (80%). The second most recommended idea was

“Easier access to tests, condoms, and medical equipment” which was

recommended by 4 persons. Finally, the remaining 2 persons did not believe the

government could help with this issue.

In figure 6 it can be observed that, 0 participants believe members of the

Hinduism, Baháʼí Faith, Baptistism and Buddhism are most affected by Aids(HIV)

( least selected option)(The fourth most selected option ), 1 participant believe

members of the Anglican faith are most affected by Aids(HIV), 2 participants

believe members of the Christianity and Catholicism faith respectfully are most

affected by Aids(HIV) (The third most selected option ), 9 participants believe

30
members of the Islam faith are most affected by Aids(HIV) (The second most

selected option ), finally, 16 participants believe members of the all faith are

equally affected by Aids(HIV) (The most selected option ).

In figure 7 it can be observed that, 0 participants believe members of Indian

descent are most affected by Aids(HIV), 0 participants believe members of

Chinese descent are most affected by Aids(HIV)(these being the two least selected

options), 2 participants believe members of European descent are most affected by

Aids(HIV)(the 3rd least and most selected option),13 participants believe members

of mixed descent are most affected by Aids(HIV)(the 2nd most selected option)

and lastly 15 participants believe members of African descent are most affected by

Aids(HIV)( the most selected option) .

In figure 8 it was observed that 27 participants believe that there is enough

awareness about AIDS in our community(this having the highest voted option) and

3 believe that there is not enough awareness about AIDS in our community(being

the lowest voted option).

31
FINDINGS
During my research I have acquired a compilation of information with regards to

the level of awareness of AIDS (HIV) in Bayview. These are as follows:

● 76.7% of respondents of the questionnaire are educated about AIDS(HIV).

23.3% are not.

● 0% of respondents of the questionnaire took part in any educational

programs that talk about Aids(HIV).

● 0% of respondents of the questionnaire has or know someone who has

contracted AIDS(HIV)

32
RECOMMENDATIONS
The importance of persons being aware of AIDS(HIV) plays a major part in our

fight against HIV/AIDS, it simply means that educating individuals on this disease

will teach them about how it is contracted, prevention and treatment ,This will

have a direct impact on the number persons contracting this disease and also deaths

as a result of this disease. Schools and parents ensure that they educate children,

specifically teenagers, about this disease.

Almost 1 million people die from AIDS( HIV) each year; in some countries, it's the

leading cause of death.AIDS(HIV) is one of the world's most fatal infectious

diseases.

The following are recommendations In order to increase awareness on the topic of

HIV / AIDS in the community of Bay View, La Romaine:

1. Provide accurate and up to date information on testing, transmission and

prevention. This can be done through distribution of pamphlets and sticking

of flyers through the community by our local health centers.

2. Outreach programmes, the community center can have outreach programs to

educate and also provide free testing for members of the community in order

to provide them with accurate information, know their status and increase

awareness.

33
3. Engage in seminars and or workshops in the community to raise awareness

of HIV/AIDS.

4. Utilize media such as print media, social media, radio and television to

educate on HIV/AIDS.

5. Collaboration-partner with health and welfare services such as the

community health center to assist in distribution of information and offering

of free testing to members of the community.

6. Peer education- engaging in peer education in the schools of the community

etc.

7. Engage in community walkabouts and or marches/parades for World Aids

day to raise awareness on this disease.

8. Educational seminars in schools particularly secondary schools about

HIV/AIDS.
