Assignment Instructions PART 1

Personality Trait Assumptions

Trait psychologists make the following key assumptions about personality:
1. There are meaningful differences between individuals that can be measured.
2. There is some degree of consistency in personality over time.
3. There is some degree of consistency in behavior across situations, which is
attributable to personality stability.
In evaluating these assumptions, discuss how each assumption may be correct or incorrect.
Do you agree with each assumption? Why, or why not? Be sure to address and assess the
scientific methods and any ethical implications of the trait approach in your response.

Written Assignment: Traits and Personality
This week you have the opportunity to take the Neo-Short Form Assessment found
here: Short Form for the IPIP-NEO https://drj.virtualave.net/IPIP/ipipneo120.htm This
assessment will have 120 short questions in a Likert scale.

This scale measures your Big Five Traits and sub-traits. This assessment should take
between 15-20 minutes to complete.

Certain traits may reflect one's personality. For example, in various studies looking at the Big
Five Traits, individuals who score high on neuroticism are more focused on themselves.
Research also found that college students who score high in conscientiousness and
agreeableness, correlated with positive academic performance.

In looking at all five traits, select two traits and describe how these traits can impact one's
personality. Include how one's personality may be impacted by a score of high, average, or
low in this trait.

Within your scores for the Big Five Traits, were there particular areas that appeared to be
accurate or inaccurate?

How do these traits impact your personality? Provide an example and explain.

From these results, do you believe there is a connection among your traits, either by nature
or nurture, or both? Explain.

You will need to have read this week's readings to complete this assignment. You are
required to use references from the text and two other sources to support your work. You
may use interest resources, books, and articles, but all work must be cited.
