Here is a mock application essay for the University of Pennsylvania. Please edit for
grammar, spelling, clarity, etc. as though it were about to be submitted.
How will you explore your intellectual and academic interests at the University of
Pennsylvania? Please answer this question given the specific undergraduate school to
which you are applying. (400-650 words) For students applying to the other coordinated
dual-degree and specialized programs, please answer this question in regards to your
single-degree school choice; your interest in the coordinated dual-degree or specialized
program may be addressed through the program-specific essay.
I first became interested in genetics and genetic disorders while working at a
recovery program for kids. From the interactions with the nursing faculty and the kids’
family, I learned that many genetic disorders are hereditary. In order to learn more about
different treatments for these disorders, I studied countless number of books and attended
many lectures. By the end of my exploration, I had a solid grasp of concepts of genetics
and molecular biology. These concepts were theoretical unless they are supported and
consolidated by practice. I put these concepts into practice through both collaborative and
independent research projects on gene expressions of marine animals, such as sea
cucumbers and Atlantic salmon. I discovered the role genes played in different organisms
while also picking up practical lab skills. and strengthen my understanding of previous
query(?)
I am also interested in learning about the genetic structure of plants, especially after
reading Scott Poethig’s research about the “timing of vegetative phase change.” In his
research, Poethig explored molecular regulation of gene expressions by miRNA, which are
molecules that control the transition from juvenile to adult stage phase. I also learned that
the beginning of the vegetative phase change, not suppressed by miR156 and miR157, is
propelled by the increase of SBP/SPL proteins. This project filled many gaps in my
understanding and experiences with plant gene. Since there are always some similarities
between genome of organisms, I hope one day to take what I learned from his research
and apply it to my own.
Given my strong interest in genetics and molecular biology, I am really excited
about the variety of courses that UPenn has to offer, including BIO 221 Molecular Biology
and Genetics. This course would build a solid foundation for further exploration. I am also
eager to take Professor Doris Wagner’s BIOL 483 Epigenetics, which focuses on
epigenetic mechanism and regulation. I feel like I would enjoy the collaborative nature of
this class, which encourages students to share their work, gives them opportunities to look
beyond, and even provides guest presentations for them to learn about current research.
Through the sharing of projects and experience, I can identify and improve upon the weak
points of my projects and understanding of concepts while following the footsteps of
current scientific breakthroughs. Lastly, I am really excited to take BIOL 422 Human
Genetics and Genomics to begin my journey on understanding the human genome and
the relationship between genes, traits, and diseases.
Given my experiences, I believe that Department of Biology would be a good fit. I am sure
that the wealth of educational resources and opportunities that Penn provides will help me
achieve my goals and satisfy my interest in molecular genetics and epigenetics.

General Comments:
- While the student’s passion for biology is evident, he goes into much detail about
complex biological processes and not much about the school’s academic programs. He
doesn’t answer the question until the last paragraph.
- I would elaborate on the different courses, activities, and facilities that Penn provides.
