2. CASE STUDY: ZERO LIQUID DISCHARGE (ZLD)
TECHNOLOGIES
Introduction to Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)
Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is an advanced wastewater treatment process designed to
eliminate liquid waste discharge from industries and other facilities. It involves the recovery,
recycling, and reuse of water while converting the remaining waste into solid form for proper
disposal.
ZLD ensures sustainable water management by reducing water consumption, minimizing
environmental impact, and adhering to stringent environmental regulations.
This process typically includes techniques such as reverse osmosis (RO), evaporators,
crystallizers, and brine concentrators. ZLD systems are widely adopted in industries like
textiles, power plants, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food processing, where water usage and
discharge are significant concerns.
Overview of ZLD Systems
Fig 2.1. Working of ZLD
The ZLD process follows a series of stages:
1. Pre-treatment: Removal of larger solids, oils, and greases to protect subsequent stages.
2. Concentration: Technologies like RO or thermal evaporators are used to concentrate
wastewater by removing most of the water.
3. Crystallization: The final step, where concentrated brine is crystallized to separate solid
waste from water. The water is recycled back into the system, and the solid waste is

safely disposed of.
Features of Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Systems
Wastewater can be recycled and reused when it will be treated through the system because there
are many features which clearly state the importance of the features of Zero-liquid Discharge,
and some of them are mentioned below-
No liquid waste discharge- The system is designed in such a manner that it helps in eliminating
the waste from the water before discharging it into the environment, which ultimately helps in
decreasing the demand for freshwater resources. Therefore, the system can be easily bought
through Zero-liquid Discharge Suppliers at a cheap rate.
Recovery Rate- These systems are capable of securing 95-99% of water after treating them and
leaving only a small amount of waste for discharging into the environment which makes it
much more efficient.
Energy Efficient- Since the industries, factories, and commercial units have the requirement of
the system, that’s why our experts have built the system by putting a lot of effort into making it
energy efficient so that the electricity bill can be minimized.
Compliance with regulation- There are many industries such as power generation, chemical
manufacturing, and mining where the installation of a zero liquid discharge system is a must.
There are many places where there are financial repercussions for not installing these systems,
so it is a must to have this system which can be easily achieved through ZLD Manufacturers in
India.
