Assignment #2

An engineer is someone who has confidence in their abilities to solve any problem that

they face. Problem solving always stood out as a trait that can be universally applied to almost

every situation. After working in finance for two years I came to a realization that I wanted to

switch to a career that would allow me to make a greater impact from my work. I sat down,

created a list of traits I enjoyed and a list of jobs in which those traits are used every day. My list

was problem solving, using software programs, and a job that would allow me to work in an

office but also allow me to work in the field. Engineering was a major sector that stood out for

me. It also connected with me in a special way. I watched a TV show growing up called

CowBoy BeBop, it was set in the distant future where space travel was as common and

convenient as driving a car. The most advanced math we currently have was elementary math

in the BeBop universe. I always looked up to that universe as an example of how I wanted to

be. To be able to exist in the world with a higher understanding of how everything around me

operates and functions. With engineering I felt that same way, it is something that will allow me

to have the knowledge about how things operate and how to repair them.

I aspire to be someone who can wake up, go to work, and be able to actually enjoy

being at work for eight hours. Working at a job just for the money is an experience I am far too

familiar with and I do not want to have that same experience in the engineering world. I am

really interested in working in renewable energy secure, specifically hydro energy. Renewable

energy is exciting to me because it is relatively new technology and has the chance to have a

big impact on the world. Being a part of something that can result in positive outcomes for

everyone is a reason why engineering is important to me.

Any field will come with positives and negatives attached to working in that industry.

Positives that come with the engineering industry are a stable income, loving my work, and

being able to find work. It is no secret that being an engineer comes with a stable income. My

goal is not to accumulate as much wealth as I can, but to have an income that allows me to live

my life without the extra pressure of needing to worry about my financial situation. I do not have

aspirations to own a mega yacht but I do want to be able to treat myself to an extravagant

vacation. Having worked a handful of jobs one thing sticks out to me, enjoying your job and the

people you work are key ingredients to being mentally tuned into your work. I take my mental

health and happiness very seriously and is a major component in my decision making when

applying for jobs. Engineering is something that I imagined as a job I could do for 20 plus years

and still enjoy it. The invention of AI has rocked the job market by making people fear that their

job might be obsolete in the future. Engineering involves so much critical thinking that we are

far away from AI being a threat to the industry.

Negatives that could be associated with being an engineer are stress levels, amount of

schooling required. Being an engineer comes with a code of ethics that if not followed can have

dire consequences. When you are in charge of creating something that is implemented into the

world you are also responsible for any negative side effects that could happen. Engineers are

unfortunate to be in a position where they can be held personally liable for their actions which

can add a lot of stress to the job. Going back to school was a big decision. It was going to be

potentially 4-5 years until I finished this program at the beginning and it was scary to image

myself going back to school for that long while all my other peers were moving up at companies

they have been with since we all graduated.

In my perfect world I would be finished with the JEP in two years, move to Chicago for

10 years to work at a company that builds renewable energy machines, move to Boston at the

age of 40 to work at a company the builds underwater turbines, retire at the age of 55 and live

on a lake house in Maine. Out of this perfect world what I am willing to sacrifice is the
companies/sector of engineering at which I work. The first step to achieving this perfect world is

to complete this degree. To me an engineer is someone who is capable of imagining a solution

to a problem and being able to take that idea from their mind and bring it into reality. My

problem is what am I going to be for the rest of my life. My solution, a hard working mechanical

engineer who wants to work on projects that have the ability to drastically affect our world. Now

using the skills and resources I’ve developed my entire life I am going to bring my solution into

reality.
