Lesson Plan in Teaching Science in Elementary Grades

I.OBJECTIVES
LEARNING
The learners should be able to.
COMPETENCY
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Describe different methods for separating mixtures, including
filtration, evaporation, magnetic separation, decantation, and
LEARNING
sieving.
OBJECTIVES
Demonstrate the use of these separation techniques.
Identify which separation technique to use for various types of
mixtures.
II. CONTENT Topic:Separating Mixtures

Presenting New Lesson Examples might include separating sand and
stones, salt and water, or removing paper clips from
a pile of sand.
"How do we separate things that are mixed
together?"

 ENGAGE Activity: Mystery Mixture Challenge

Establishing a Purpose for the
Lesson Materials: Prepare a few mystery mixtures in clear
containers:

Container 1: Sand and water.

Container 2: Salt and water.

Container 3: Iron filings and sand.

Container 4: Rice and small stones

 EXPLORE Activity: Divide students into small groups, giving
each group a mixture to separate using a specific
Presenting instances of the new method:
lesson
Filtration: Separate sand from water using a filter.

Evaporation: Demonstrate or explain how to

separate salt from water by evaporating the water.
Magnetic Separation: Separate iron filings from
sand using a magnet.

Decantation: Separate water from soil by pouring

off the liquid.

Sieving: Separate stones from sand using a sieve.

What happens during each process and discuss

with their group members?
 EXPLAIN After the hands-on exploration, and after each

practicing skills
Explain that filtration is used to separate solids
from liquids using a filter.
Example:“Imagine you’re separating sand from
water. The sand (solid) gets trapped in the filter,
while the water (liquid) passes through.”

Explain that evaporation separates a dissolved

solid from a liquid by heating the liquid until it
evaporates, leaving the solid behind.
Example :“When you heat saltwater, the water
turns into vapor, and the salt remains.”

Explain that magnetic separation is used to

separate magnetic materials (like iron) from non-
magnetic materials.
Example: “A magnet attracts iron filings, but it
won’t pick up sand, so you can easily separate
them.”

Describe decantation as a method to separate

liquids from heavier solids by pouring the liquid off
carefully.
Example: “If you have water and sand mixed
together, you can let the sand settle at the bottom,
then pour off the water.”

Explain that sieving is used to separate larger

solids from smaller solids based on particle size
using a mesh or sieve.

Example: “If you have a mixture of rice and small

stones, a sieve with holes big enough for the rice
to pass through will keep the stones behind.”
 ELABORATE Direction:I'll give you a scenario ang identify which
separation method(s) would you use for each

 EXTEND Assignments:Choose one of the following

separation techniques (filtration, evaporation,
magnetic separation, decantation, or sieving) and
answer the following questions:

1. Where is this separation method used in the real

world? (e.g., water purification, recycling, food
processing)
2. Explain how this separation method works in the
example you chose?
3. Why is it important to separate mixtures in this
way in real-life situations?
