Fire Safety Training
Objective: The purpose of this Fire Safety Training Policy is to educate all employees on fire hazards,
prevention, emergency response, and evacuation procedures. This policy aims to minimize the risk of fire-
related incidents in the workplace, protect employees and property, and ensure compliance with local fire
safety regulations.
Scope:
This policy applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors who work or enter the facility. It covers the
identification of fire hazards, safe work practices, the proper use of fire safety equipment, and the
procedures to follow in case of a fire emergency.
Fire Safety Training Policy Guidelines
1. General Fire Safety Training Overview:
Initial Training: All new employees must complete fire safety training during their induction process
before starting work in the facility.
Refresher Training: Fire safety training should be conducted at least annually for all employees. This
ensures that knowledge remains up-to-date and relevant.
Training Method: Training should combine both theoretical instruction (e.g., classroom or online)
and practical exercises (e.g., fire drills, using fire extinguishers, and evacuation procedures).
2. Identification of Fire Hazards:
Employees must be able to identify potential fire hazards in the workplace, such as:
Flammable materials (e.g., chemicals, solvents, oils, papers).
Faulty electrical equipment or wiring.
Blocked fire exits or fire escape routes.
Poorly maintained heating systems or cooking equipment.
Smoking areas or improper disposal of cigarette butts.
Storage of materials near heat sources.
3. Fire Prevention Practices:
Proper Storage: Ensure that all flammable materials are stored in designated, well-ventilated areas
away from heat sources.
Electrical Safety: Regularly inspect electrical wiring, outlets, and equipment for damage. Never
overload electrical circuits and unplug equipment when not in use.

Housekeeping: Maintain clean work areas. Remove waste, oily rags, and other combustible
materials promptly.
Smoking Policy: Smoking should be restricted to designated areas away from flammable materials.
Smoking materials must be disposed of properly in fire-safe containers.
Hot Work Safety: For tasks such as welding or cutting, implement hot work permits and ensure fire
watches are in place.
4. Fire Safety Equipment Training:
Employees must be trained on the proper use and maintenance of fire safety equipment, including:
Fire Extinguishers: Employees should be trained in the different types of fire extinguishers (Class A,
B, C, D, K) and know which type to use for specific fire classes.
o PASS Method: Training should include the PASS method for using fire extinguishers:
Pull the pin.
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the handle.
Sweep from side to side.
Fire Blankets: In case of small fires on clothing or cooking surfaces, employees should know how to
use fire blankets effectively.
Fire Alarms and Sprinklers: Employees must understand how fire alarms work and what actions to
take if an alarm is activated. They should also be aware of the location of sprinkler systems and how
they are triggered.
First Aid for Burns: Training should include basic first aid for burns, including cooling the burn area
with water and covering it with a sterile bandage until medical help arrives.
5. Evacuation Procedures:
Evacuation Routes: All employees should be familiar with the location of the nearest exits,
emergency exits, and assembly points. These routes should be clearly marked with exit signs.
Evacuation Drills: Regular fire drills (at least once a year) should be conducted to ensure that all
employees know how to evacuate the building quickly and safely.
o Employees should practice evacuating calmly, in an orderly fashion, and without the use of
elevators.
o Evacuations should be conducted for different scenarios, including partial evacuations, full
building evacuations, and assembly at safe meeting points.

Role of Fire Wardens: Designated fire wardens (or safety officers) will assist in directing employees
during evacuations and ensure that no one is left behind in the building. Fire wardens should receive
additional training on emergency response procedures and use of firefighting equipment.
6. Emergency Communication:
Emergency Contact Information: Employees should be aware of who to contact in the event of a fire
(e.g., fire department, facility management, security team).
Emergency Plans: The organization should have an up-to-date emergency plan that includes fire
incidents, with clear roles and responsibilities for all employees.
Alerting Authorities: Ensure that employees know how to use fire alarm systems and how to
communicate an emergency situation to fire authorities or security personnel.
7. Special Considerations for High-Risk Areas:
High-Hazard Areas: Employees working in high-risk areas (e.g., kitchens, chemical storage areas, or
electrical rooms) should receive specialized fire safety training tailored to the specific risks
associated with those areas.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Employees in high-risk areas should wear appropriate PPE,
such as flame-resistant clothing, non-slip shoes, and safety glasses, to reduce the likelihood of injury
during a fire.
8. Post-Fire Procedures:
Incident Reporting: After any fire emergency, employees must report the incident to their
supervisor or safety officer. The incident should be documented, and an investigation should be
conducted to determine the cause and identify any corrective actions.
Debriefing and Counseling: Following an emergency or fire drill, employees should participate in a
debriefing session to review what went well and identify areas for improvement. If any employees
experience trauma, counseling should be offered.
9. Employee Responsibilities:
Employees must:
o Participate in fire safety training and fire drills.
o Follow all fire safety practices outlined in this policy.
o Report fire hazards or unsafe conditions to the safety officer or supervisor immediately.
o Know the location of fire exits, fire alarms, and fire extinguishers.
o Immediately report any fire-related incidents or near-misses to supervisors.
10. Supervisor Responsibilities:

Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that:
o All employees receive initial and refresher fire safety training.
o Fire safety procedures are implemented and followed.
o Fire drills are conducted regularly and documented.
o Unsafe conditions are corrected, and fire hazards are minimized.
Disciplinary Actions:
Failure to comply with fire safety procedures may result in disciplinary action, including retraining,
reassignment, or other corrective measures. In severe cases, failure to adhere to safety protocols could lead
to suspension or termination.
Performance and Review:
This policy will be reviewed annually or after any significant incidents to ensure its continued
effectiveness.
Feedback from employees will be considered to improve training and fire safety protocols.
