How to write
SMART objectives
What are SMART learning objectives?
It means that each statement of the learning objective should describe an
intended out-come in Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-framed.
Why it is important to write well-defined learning objectives for each CPD
activity?
- It will provide the learners with clear idea about the information and the
skills they will acquire during the session or event.
- It will map the direction of the content and the choice of education
methodologies.
- It will guide your evaluation process and future planning strategies.
How to write learning objectives?
- Learning objectives should be developed for both the overall educational
event and for each individual session.
- Each statement should include a verb phrase and an impact phrase that
describe what participants will do/be able to do and how they will apply
that skill or knowledge in their daily practice.
- Example:
By the end of this session the audience/learner/participants will be
able to…………..
Or
Up on compilation of this conference the participants will be able
to…………….
- Next, the statement needs an action verb describing what the participant
will be able to do,( like recognize, explain, analysis, demonstrate etc.).
- Note: Avoid using vague words like believe value, appreciate, be aware
of, be familiar with, etc.
- Example of will define objective:
By the end of this session the participant will be able to
1- Differentiate between perceived and unperceived need
assessment.
2- Demonstrate the necessary skills to conduct a need
assessment.

How to write
SMART objectives
Bloom’s Taxonomy of Measurable
Verbs
Benjamin Bloom created a taxonomy of measurable verbs to help us
describe and classify observable knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors
and abilities. The theory is based upon the idea that there are levels of
observable actions that indicate something is happening in the brain
(cognitive activity.) By creating learning objectives using measurable verbs,
you indicate explicitly what the audience must do in order to demonstrate
learning.
