Corona effect report
Section: 2
1. Setup:
Isolated Cage
HV Regulator
` Cone and a Plate Case
The Experiment:
Observing the Corona phenomenon that occurs on High voltage transmission lines, understand the
meaning on Corona, determine the voltage that corona will ionize the air completely and conduct
between two transmission lines
1- What’s Corona?
Corona is the phenomenon that usually occurs on High voltage overhead transmission
lines (above 245KV), it can be observed by its violet glow, hissing sound around the
area of the transmission line cables and the smell of produced Ozone gas due to
corona
2- Reasons Corona?
This phenomenon occurs due to the partial breakdown of the air surrounding the OHTL
because the transmission line is not completely smooth due to the climate effects on it,
which leads to that the air surrounding the transmission line is ionized due to the high
voltages carried by the cables before the full, if the voltage kept increasing before the
full breakdown we will observe the violet color of corona and the hissing sound, in
addition to the smell of the burnt ozone gas, at the full breakdown will occur leading to
short circuit
3- Disadvantage of Corona?
Power loss on the transmission lines (hissing sound means power loss )_
Production of ozone gas due to corona which affects the transmission
line cables and decreases cables lifetime besides that ozone gas affects
the environment
Full breakdown may lead to short circuit
Experiment Readings: -
We have heard hissing sound at voltage below 20KV
The full breakdown occurred at 22.5KV
