Writing
Personal essay
The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount
a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you
learn from the experience?

I don’t consider myself as someone who reflects on my past choices, things that shaped me, past
accomplishments, or memories - the few I do remember - that stuck to me. Dwelling on the past
tends to make me second guess my present situation and think of everything that I could’ve
changed and who I might’ve been. I occasionally find myself thinking back and I try to bury it
away as fast as possible. I wouldn’t say I have any major events in my life that have shaped me
much outside of one, and the only one that shaped me. I was three when I saw my younger sister
for the first time on May 1th, 2010, and seven when it was the last time, October 27th, 2014.
When I was born, they worried about all these health complications, most of which were nothing,
and she ended up being sick. My sister, Desiree, was born with Lung Cancer. I remember nights
of wanting my mother home while she was in the hospital with Desiree and crying when I couldn’t
see her. I went through a period of thinking that she was taking attention away from me, and
thinking back, it’s the stupidest thought that I’d ever had. My parents always came up with ideas
to make it seem like she was giving me gifts, for example the trip to one of the Disney’s we got
from Make-A-Wish foundation, to build a bond for us even though there wasn’t much she could
do. My mom always praised me for being a good sibling to her too, even when she’d pull my hair
by accident. She didn’t know what she was doing so I couldn’t be mad. I remember the day when
I was with my Play-therapist (I knew it was some sort of therapist, but I don’t remember exactly)
and the doctors came into the room, asking me when I thought my sister would go to Heaven. I,
being a kid, didn’t understand what they really meant and answered with “In a long time from
now” or something along the lines of that. When they said that it was today, I still didn’t get it.
Sure I knew it meant that I wouldn’t see her again for a long time, but kids don’t really understand
death too well, nor should they have to. We went to her room right after, and my family was all
there, all huddled around her bed. They did a stamp of her foot in black ink, my family took turns
saying goodbyes, and the machine supporting her - she’d beaten Cancer, but the kemo-therapy
was too harsh and apparently put holes in her lungs - was unplugged. When the funeral came
around, right before we went, it was the first time I’d never seen my mother cry with such
anguish before that. I remember going to check on her and seeing her on the floor and crying and
my grandmother making me leave the room. During the funeral, I sat quietly. After the funeral, I
was pulled out of school for three weeks.

I don’t really know what all of this happening or not happening would’ve done for me. I never let
myself dwell on what would’ve happened if Desiree were still here. I suppose it’s made me an
only child for starters, and my parents always have poured love, attention and support into me.
As a result I’ve tried my best to do the same for others. I know what loss is like and I want to
uplift those who’ve experienced it. It’s hard, debilitating, and a bunch of “I’m sorry for your loss”’s
and “It’ll be okay”’s don’t fix it. I’m not the most empathetic or sympathetic person, but I try to do
so for others, to at least show them that there’s people out there who understand.
