Gravity, or gravitation, is the force that pulls two objects

with mass towards each other. It is one of the four

fundamental forces in nature. Here are some things to know
about gravity:

Explanation

Gravity is the force that keeps planets in orbit around the

sun and causes apples to fall to the ground.

Formula

The force of gravity is calculated using Newton's Law of

Universal Gravitation, which states that the force is directly
proportional to the product of the masses of the objects and
inversely proportional to the square of the distance
between them.

Strength

The gravitational pull of an object is stronger if it has more

mass. For example, Jupiter has 2.5 times the Earth's
gravity, while the moon's gravitational pull is about 16% of
Earth's.

Free fall

On Earth, all objects fall at the same speed, which is about

9.8 meters per second.

Escape velocity

The Earth's escape velocity is 7 miles per second, meaning

an object must travel at that speed to leave Earth's
gravitational pull.

Black holes

Black holes are places in space with such strong gravity
that light cannot escape.

Weight

The force of attraction between you and the Earth is your

weight. A weighing machine measures the amount of
gravity acting on your body.

Discovery

Sir Isaac Newton discovered the theory of gravitation in the

1680s.

Experiments

Galileo Galilei performed some of the earliest experiments
with gravity by dropping balls from the Tower of Pisa.
