▪ Numerical problems based on calculation of
➢Kinetic energy
➢Potential energy
1. Potential energy = mgh
𝟏
2. Kinetic energy = mv2
𝟐
𝟏
3. Work done = Change in k.e. = m (v2-u2)
𝟐
Q1: An object of mass 15kg is moving with a uniform velocity of 4 m/s,
what is the kinetic energy possessed by the object?
Solution:
m = 15kg
v = 4m/s
𝟏
k.e. = mv2
𝟐
𝟏
k.e. = × 15 × 4 × 4 = 120 Joule
𝟐
Q2: How fast should a man of mass 60 kg run so that the kinetic energy
is 750 Joule?
Solution:
m = 60 kg
k.e. = 750 J
𝟏
k.e. = mv2
𝟐
𝟏
750 = × 60 × v2
𝟐
750 𝑋 2
v2 =
60
v= 25
v = 5 m/s
Q3: Two bodies of equal masses move with uniform velocities v and 3v
respectively. Find the ratio of their kinetic energies.
Solution:
Let the masses of two bodies be ‘m’.
𝟏
k.e. of first body = 𝒎𝒗𝟐

k.e. of second body = 𝒎(𝟑𝒗)𝟐

(k.e.)1 : (k.e.)2 = 1 : 9
Q4:What is the work to be done to increase the velocity of a car from 30
km/h to 60km/h if the mass of the car is 1500 kg? (NCERT Example 11.3)
Solution:
m = 1500 kg
5 25
u = 30 km/h = 30 × = m/s

5 50
v = 60 km/h = 60 × = m/s

Q5: The kinetic energy of an object of mass , m moving with a velocity of
5m/s is 25 J. What will be its kinetic energy when its velocity is doubled?
What will be its kinetic energy when its velocity is doubled?
What will be its kinetic energy when its velocity is increased three times?
(NCERT blue box question 3, page 152)
Solution:
v = 5m/s
k.e. = 25 J
1
k.e. = mv2
2
𝟏
25 = × 𝒎 × 𝟓 × 𝟓 ∴ 𝒎 = 𝟐 𝒌𝒈
𝟐
1
When velocity is doubled, i.e. 2v = 10 m/s then k.e. = × 2 × 102 = 100J
2
1
When velocity is tripled, i.e. 3v = 15 m/s then k.e. = × 2 × 152 = 225J

Q6: Find the energy possessed by an object of mass 10 kg when it is at a
height of 6m above the ground. Given g = 9.8 m/s2 (NCERT example 11.5)
Solution:
p.e. = mgh
p.e. = 10 × 9.8 × 6 = 588 Joule
