The text recommends using Super Glue and brass rod Jstock. Readers are warmed not to use this method since it can be dangerous, OT sins Carving hardwoods, for example. will generate a lot of heat in the bit; the heat may cause the Super Glue bond to weaken. The resulting slippage in the bit at high speeds is very dangerous, Frank Russell, Power Carving Editor, writes, “I have discontinued using that method completely. Now I use manufactured steel collet inserts, These are made by Foredom Electric and are widely available from carving suppliers. When carving walnut, for example, I suggest using an aggressive bit such as a flame-shaped 3/32. in.-shafted Kutzall burr for roughing. Then use a ruby carver, diamond bit, or a fluted steel burr for fine det and finishing. Also keep in mind that over-exerting any bit will cause burning and other problems.” 1 Competition °98 Competition “98 is an annual retrospec- tive of the year’s best bird carving competitions. Vermont Not all feathers have a hard look. The contour feathers have a soft appearance and are found on a bird within a variety of feather group locations: the head. neck, bib, nape, cape, breast belly flanks, back, and upper and lower tail coverts. Depending on location and species, these same feathers can appear extremely soft and fluffy with many indentations and separations, or they can look firm and tight In the step-by-step sequence, I create soft appearance by defining different feathers within the group using indenta- tion and separation. This effect works st well on a bird that stands, sits, of lies rest. On a bird in action or one that is frightened, however, these same feath cers are pulled closer together to give a harder, smoother appearance Watch any bird ata feeder out in the n, then observe the same bird within the canopy of the forest where it feels safe. It doesn’t appear to be the same bird, Its feathers at the feeder are very tight and drawn together owing to fright within the cover of the forest, it feels safer and more relaxed and it allows its contour feathers to relax away from the body. Observe a wild duck at rest on a pond, then notice what happens when that bird is alerted. It will appear larger or smaller depending on its activity location and mental state The shaping and texturing technique shown works for any of the softer appearing contour feathers. Here's a rule of thumb that should be helpful make shallower cuts and shapes for a smoother, harder appearance and deeper ccuts and shapes for a softer appearance Frank Russell's next texturing feature will be Shaping and Texturing Hard Feathers.
