Adding and Subtracting Simple Fractions

• To add or subtract similar or like fractions, add or subtract the numerators and
write the sum or difference over the common denominator.
• To add or subtract unlike or dissimilar fractions, change them first to similar
fractions. Then, add or subtract the way you add or subtract similar fractions.
Examples:

Adding and Subtracting Mixed Fractions

• To add or subtract mixed numbers, add or subtract their whole number parts and
their fraction parts separately. Then, put together the sum or difference of the
fraction parts and the whole number parts. Simplify the result, whenever
possible.
Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers
• To multiply fractions, write the product of the numerators over the product of the
denominators. Simplify the result, whenever possible.
• To multiply mixed numbers, first change them to improper fractions, and then
multiply the way you multiply proper fractions. Simplify the product, whenever
possible

Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers

• To divide fractions, multiply the dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor.
• To divide mixed fractions, change the mixed fractions to improper fractions before
dividing them.
• Simplify the fractions either before computing the numbers or after getting the
result.
Adding and Subtracting Decimals and Mixed Decimals
• To add or subtract decimals and mixed decimals:
• Align the decimal points and the digits that belong to the same place value
position. Put zeros whenever necessary. Then, add or subtract the numbers the
way you add or subtract whole numbers. Align the decimal point of the sum or
difference to the decimal points of the numbers.
Example:

Multiplying Decimals and Mixed Decimals

• To multiply decimals: Multiply the way you multiply whole numbers. Then, count
the number of decimal places in the factors. Make sure that the number of
decimal places in the product is the same as the sum of the decimal places in the
factors.
• To multiply a number or a decimal by 10, simply annex 1 zero to the number or
move the decimal point 1 decimal place to the right. To multiply a decimal by a
power of 10, move the decimal point of the decimal to the right as many decimal
places as there are zeros in the power of 10.

Dividing Decimals and Mixed Decimals by Whole Numbers and Decimals

• To divide a decimal by a whole number, divide just like dividing whole numbers
and make sure that the quotient has the same number of decimal places as there
are in the dividend.
• A repeating decimal is a decimal that contains a digit or groups of digits that
repeat endlessly. A terminating decimal is a decimal that contains a finite number
of digits after the decimal point.
• To divide a decimal by a power of 10, move the decimal point of the decimal to
the left, because division is the inverse of multiplication. Move the decimal point,
as many decimal places as there are zeros in the power of 10.
• To divide a number or a decimal by 0.1, 0.01, or 0.001, simply move the decimal
point in the decimal 1, 2, or 3 decimal places to the right, respectively.
