TASK 4
Read about 7 unusual hobbies. There are 5 people looking for a new hobby. Match each
person (1 - 5) with a hobby that is best for him/her. Write the letter of the hobby (A - F)
next to the number of each person. There is an extra hobby which you will not need.
There is an example (0) at the beginning. Copy your answers on the Answer Sheet.

A Toy Voyaging
ToyVoyagers is a community of people who send their toys on a journey around the world to
the hosts who receive the toy and go sightseeing with it. They take a picture (or make a video)
of the toy vising various landmarks and post it on social media. Toy owners can, in a virtual
way, travel around the world with their toys and learn a lot about other cultures. Hosts get an
opportunity to show their cities to the world. What will it cost you? You just have to pay the
postage for sending the toy to the host.

B Tree Shaping
If you like spending time in nature and own or have access to living trees or woody plants,
this is the perfect hobby for you. Tree shapers use their imagination and various techniques to
make the trees grow the way they want, in unusual shapes. This hobby helps people relax,
enjoy fresh air, have peace of mind and show their creativity. However, tree shapers need to
have patience, lots of free time, some experience in gardening and great botanical knowledge.
In addition, the hobby can be quite costly.

C Guerilla/urban knitting
This hobby has become a sort of street art. A lot of people who knit have some yarn/wool
leftovers or some unfinished knitting projects. In order to use them well, they make creative
covers for objects found in the streets, parks and other public places – monuments, water
hydrants, doorknobs, Christmas trees, etc. You can become a guerilla knitter regardless of
your gender, age or race.

D Birdwatching
This hobby is intended for people who like to spend time outdoors, observing birds in their
natural environment. Birdwatchers can be ornithologists (specialists who study birds) or
ordinary people who like to engage in scientific work of this kind. People relax and observe
birds in different ways – by listening to their chirping and by watching them (using devices
such as binoculars, webcams or their naked eye).

E Tattooing the cars

The first cars were tattooed by Li Zongxiong, a pensioner from Taiwan. He tattooed four
vehicles from his workshop by covering them completely in words taken from Buddhist texts.
The hobby caught on. In 2020, a tattoo artist from London, Claudia De Sabe, created a unique
tattoo of a koi carp on the Lexus UX compact SUV. Her work only might cost more than
£120,000. For this hobby you need lots of knowledge, experience, imagination and good
health, as a tattooing project can take a lot of time.

5
F Soap Carving
This hobby is perfect for all creative people who like to work in peace. They need to be
concentrated on their work in order to carve various details into a bar of soap. They use many
tools and techniques. If you prefer to spend your time indoors, and you have lots of
imagination, this is the hobby for you. In addition, you can share your creations with the
world on social media.

G News Raiding
This hobby is a sort of photo bombing. The goal of news raiders is to end up in the news or on
TV. They find out where the local news crews will be reporting from and they do their best to
stand in the background, within the shot. The successful ones can regularly be seen on TV.

Person Hobby
Simon has always liked to be the centre of attention. His childhood
(0) G dream was to become a journalist and work on TV, but he could not
afford going to university. He has a lot of free time and likes to walk or
get around the city every day.
Cathy is a retired Biology teacher. Having a lot of free time, she is
looking for a new hobby and is willing to learn a new skill, but only if it
(1) ___ does not involve using technology and if it is not expensive. She has
never done any crafts using her hands, so she would like to try doing it
now, and be able to show her work to people. She is quite adventurous.
Mark is a bank manager whose work can be very stressful. He is in
constant contact with people, spends hours on the phone and at his
(2) ___ computer. Being a wildlife and nature lover, and not having too much
free time, he is looking for a new hobby that would help him take a
break, go outside and get away from the noise.
Ginger used to be very active. She has had many hobbies, such as
collecting souvenirs, magnets and toys from her numerous travels.
However, a few months ago, she had an accident. She had a surgery and
(3) ___
will have to lie still for 6 months. She won’t be able to leave her home.
She needs a new hobby, but she is not very creative. She does not have
much money to spend either.
Jack is a very shy young man. He does not feel comfortable around
people. He has recently bought a house with a large garden, so he can
(4) ___
spend time outside the house, far away from the city noise. He has a
PhD in Biology and is quite well-off.
Charles is a very special individual. His body is covered in tattoos, he
has an unusual hairstyle, and is very creative. He is a self-employed
architect. His job requires him to travel a lot on everyday basis, so he is
(5) ___
tired of spending so much time outside his home. He would like a hobby
where he could use his talent and creativity, but which involves short-
term projects.

answer A, B or C. There is an example at the beginning (0). Copy your answers (A, B or
C) on the Answer Sheet.

Why coaches are the unsung sustainability superheroes of our roads

At 7 a.m. in the depths of winter, I stood at a National Express bus stop in Chepstow on my
way to a work thing in London. I was feeling a bit puzzled as to why I hadn’t chosen coach
over train before: after all, the experience was giving me a close-to-home pick-up, a direct
service, seat guaranteed, and I was so pleased at having spent just a sixth of the rail fare.
Onboard I was yet more impressed, the driver so kind to a young mum overladen with babes
and bags that I tweeted to praise the service.
So it was all with a mild sense of shame that on arriving at the work thing (on time, for the
record), I said quietly rather than shouted that I’d arrived in the big city by coach. Coaches just
aren’t cool, right?
As I sit here now challenging myself on the unexpected whiff of shame I’d attached to my
journey, I realize that I have not boarded a coach in over a decade.
The truth is, given the personal benefits of opting for the coach, we’re all complete mugs if we
don’t consider travelling this way: in reported road accidents in 2020, there were fewer fatal
accidents for those travelling by coach than for any other road user type. It’s also the ultimate
stress-free way to travel – let someone else drive you, navigate you, park you… No wonder a
luxury coach is the preferred choice of VIPs, Premier League footballers, et al.
One of the most significant advantages of travelling by coach is found in its environmental
value, a factor affirmed by Mark Williams: “Coaches offer real solutions to pollution issues,”
he says. “And it’s pretty easy to see how much more efficient they are than cars: average car
occupancy in cities is roughly 1.3 people and each car will use a gallon of fuel every 30 miles;
coach occupancy is around 40, using a gallon of fuel every 10 miles.”
With average carbon dioxide emissions per coach passenger per journey around 1.5 times lower
than rail, five times lower than air, and six times lower than car travel, he’s got a point. And
that’s before we’ve even touched on congestion: just one coach keeps up to 50 cars off the road.
Mark goes on to explain: “Compare flying from London to Paris with getting there by coach.
When you’ve taken into account the time it takes to get to the airport, through the airport and
waiting around, transfer time and so on, the coach rolls in only about an hour after the flyers.”
