Q1 What is a computer Network ?

Ans. Networking is a process that allows sharing of information and resources
through a common platform. Eg network of roads, network of schools etc.

Q2.What is the role of transmission medium in a computer network?

In network communications, a transmission medium is a physical path or an
interface between the transmitter and the receiver. There are two major
categories of transmission media:
Classification Of Transmission Media:

WIRED WIRELESS
MEDIA MEDIA

Q3.List some advantages of Networking.

Ans. Advantages of networking are :
 Efficient use of Storage media
 Reduction in hardware cost
 Efficiency
 Quick sharing of information
Q4. What is a Coaxial cable? Differentiate between Broadband and Baseband
coaxial cable.
Coaxial cable-A Coaxial cable is a cable used in the transmission of video,
communications, and audio. This cable has high bandwidths and greater
transmission capacity
Baseband coaxial cable- It supports quick transmission of a single signal at a
time. It is mainly used for LANs.
Broadband coaxial cable-It transmits multiple signals at the same time and is
used for longer distances.

Q 5. Differentiate between the Microwave and Infrared wireless technology.

• Ans. Microwave transmission is considered a 'Line of Sight' technology.
• This is because the proper functioning of microwave transmission
requires empty airspace.
• The airspace between two point-to-point microwave towers must be
clear of mountains, buildings, and other objects.
• These obstructions can block microwave signals.
• This wireless technology uses high-frequency beams of radio waves to
provide high-speed connections that can send and receive voice, video,
and data information.

Infrared Technology
Infrared covers short range communication approximately 5 meters of
distance, it exchanges information by emitting infrared waves. Infrared
communication can take place only between two devices at a time.IR signals
cannot penetrate walls or other obstructions. Example- Remote control

Q6. What is the utility of Domain Name? Explain with the help of an example.
Ans Domain name is a unique name given to each website or resource
connected to the internet .Domain names are easier to remember than IP
addresses since name has strong correlation with the website.
Example-The domain name for Google search engine is google.co.in , for
Wikipedia ,it is Wikipedia.org

Q 7.What is the role of a Gateway in Computer Networks?

Ans. A Gateway is a network point that acts as an entrance to another
network using different protocols.it allows us to carry out various online
activities ,such as sending email, browsing through web pages and more .
It is also called packet converter because it works as a messenger ,that
takes data from one system ,interprets it and transfers into another system.

Q 8. Write short notes on each of the following:

2)Modem- A modem is used to convert digital signals understood by computers to

analogue signals understood by telephone networks. The name is derived from its
functions of MODULATING and DEMODULATING signals from analogue to digital. It is
used to enable computers to communicate with each other over telephone networks.
Modems are available in two categories –
• Internal modem -A modem that is installed on the PCI(peripheral component
interconnect) slots available on the internet.
• External modem- A modem that is connected on the outside of the computer.
An external modem is connected to the serial port or USB port.
3)Personal Area Network- A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network
organized around an individual person and is set up for personal use only. It covers
small area about 10 meters, it is used to connect devices like laptop , mobile phones ,
PDA ,smartphones. It can be wired or wireless. Using pan you can transfer filers
including emails ,calendar appointment , digital photos, music.

4) Simplex Data transmission- is the data transmission mode in which the data can flow
only in one direction, i.e., the communication is unidirectional. In this mode, a sender
can only send data but can not receive it. Similarly, a receiver can only receive data but
can not send it.
Example –TV AND RADIO BROADCASTING
Q9 write two points of differences for each of the following:
1) Hub and Switch
HUB SWITCH
Used to connect multiple A switch is able to handle
computers and computing the data and knows the
devices directly to the specific addresses to
network by using cables. send the message.
Hub receives data at one of its ports, Switch is more efficient
it distributes the data to the other than the hub,it sends the
ports in the network. incoming data only to the
intended port.
2) Router and Repeater

Router Repeater
Router is used to connect two It is a communication device used
different networks, such as two to regenerate a signal.
LANs or a LAN and a WAN
It chooses the best route to Using Repeaters signals can travel
transmit data packet from sender longer distances with the same
to receiver’s end strength or at higher power.
