Arts 5

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
a. identify the baroque churches of the Philippines;
b. value the role of Philippine Baroque churches in preserving Filipino cultural identity and representing the
country’s rich heritage; and
c. create visual representations of the four baroque churches.

II. Subject Matter

1.Greetings and Opening Prayer

“Before you take your seat, kindly pick up the
pieces of papers under your chair and put them
in the trash can. I will give you 10 seconds.”

2. Checking of Attendance

“Let me check your attendance first. Class


monitor, is there any absent from the class?”
“Very good! There is no absent from the class.
Because of that, let’s give ourselves a present “None Sir”
clap. Do you know how to do it?”

3. Setting of Classroom Standards

“ I want you to be reminded of our classroom

B. Developmental Activities

1.Motivation

“Do you want to play a game?”

“Now we will play a game. But before that, I


will group you first into 2 groups. Count 1 to “Yes Sir”
2.”

“Group 1 will occupy the first column while


group 2 in the second column. I will give you
10 seconds to go to your area.”

“ What we are going to play right now is


picture puzzle. Do you know this game?”
( The students will raise their hands)
“This game is very simple. All you need to do
is to arrange the puzzle to form the pictures. “ No Sir”
The first group to arrange the puzzle will be
the winner and will receive 5 stars while the
second group to arrange will receive 3 stars.”

“Do you understand?”

“Are you ready?” “ Yes Sir”

“If so, let’s start the game”

“Again our lesson this morning is all about


Philippine Baroque Churches. Now, let’s get
to know about these churches. Everybody
read.” “The Philippine baroque churches
encompasses four Roman Catholic churches
built between the 16th and 18th centuries
during the Spanish colonial period. These
churches, located in different parts of the
Philippines , are known for their unique
Baroque architecture and ornate decorations.”

“The Saint Augustine Church commonly
known as Paoy Church, is a Roman Catholic
church in Paoay, Ilocos Norte that was built in
1710.

“As what you have seen in the video, it is said


that Paoay Church is more or less 300 years
old and it is an example of Earthquake
Baroque structure. It is renowned for its 24
massive buttresses that flank the sides and
back of the building, designed to withstand the
frequent earthquakes. That’s why even though
many earthquakes had pass, the church is still
standing strong.”

“Again, what is the name of this church?”


“Paoay church”

“It is also known as?”


“Saint Augustine Church”

“ It is located in?” “ Paoay, Ilocos Norte”

“ Next is Santa Maria Church. Everybody


read.”
“The Santa Maria Church also known as the
Church of Our lady of Assumption is a Roman
Catholic church in Ilocos Sur.”
“Santa Maria Church is a Roman Catholic
church in Ilocos Sur. It is also known as the
Church of Our Lady of Assumption. In order
for you to know better about the Santa Maria
Church, I have here a video clip.”

“ As what you have seen in the video , Santa


Maria church stands on a hill, accessible by an
impressive 86-step granite stairway. Just like
Paoay church, Santa Maria Church is also a an
earthquake baroque architecture, designed to
withstand the frequent earthquakes.”

“ Church of Our Lady of Assumption.”

“ Next is the San Agustin Church. Everybody

“ San Agustin Church also known as

Catholic church in Intramuros Manila. It was
completed in 1607 and is the oldest stone
church in the Philippines.”

museum. It is where ancient tools in church,
ancient paintings, and discovered medicinal
herbs located. That’s how amazing San
Agustin Church is.”

“ Last but not the least is the Miag-ao Church.

cultures. There is an influence of European,
Spanish in the Church design and at the same
time local arts also have a big influence. There
is an interplay of cultures and arts at the same
time.”

They showcase the fusion of European and
indigenous influences, reflecting the country’s
colonial past and its unique cultural identity.
As what you have seen from videos of the
churches, it may look old but strong and ugly
outside but inside is beautiful.”
