Looking at salaries, job markets, and growth in markets, all the engineering majors are
similar, with high salaries and mostly decent employment numbers/field growths. I’m not
necessarily a materialistic person, at least in terms of nitpicking between $88,000, $90,000, and
$100,000 so salary is not necessarily the biggest deal for me, especially since I plan on
pursuing the 4+1 MBA program here at UB which should lead to a higher salary anyways. What
I’m more focused on is if I’m interested in the field, the relative difficulty (for me, given my
academic strengths and weaknesses), and where I could be working for the next 40 years. I’m
already extremely biased against Biomedical, Chemical, and Biological Engineering, as I had a
terrible time with Regents Biology/Chemistry, and knowing myself, I would never be able to keep
up with what I learn. Furthermore, I’m not necessarily interested in the healthcare setting,
especially since my father went to medical school and my sister is planning on going to med
school, and their constant pressuring me to study a medical-related field has permanently
turned me off from that entire field, and I rather have nothing to do with it. This leads me to be
left with Industrial, Electrical, Mechanical/Aerospace, and Civil/Structural/Environmental
Engineering. I was accepted to UB as an intended Electrical Engineer, but this was mostly due
to my parents pressuring me, and I have come to realize throughout the semester and during
our turbine project that I am not the best at understanding even the most basic EE concepts.
Being left with Industrial, Mechanical/Aerospace, and Civil/Structural/Environmental
Engineering, I feel as if Industrial Engineering would be the best fit for me because I’m not the
best with technical fields, and I’m very interested in how IE almost exclusively focuses on how
engineering and more humanities-related fields interact. I’ve always had in interest in humanities
and social issues but know that I wouldn’t be able to major in them, but IE provides a balance
that I was really excited to hear about after attending the IE department presentation, which led
to me almost immediately switching my major.
