Photosynthesis

How do living things get energy form the sun?

• Every living thing needs energy, to carry out cell functions.
• EX: Zebra’s meat provides lion with energy, similar the grass provides
zebra’s cells with energy, but plants use energy directly form the sun
The Sun is an energy source
• Photosynthesis: is the process by which the cell captures energy
from sunlight and uses it to make the food.
• Living things obtain energy directly or indirectly from the sunlight.
• Producers ( autotrophs) : organisms that make their own food.
• Consumers ( heterotrophs) :organisms cannot make their own food
What happens during photosynthesis?
• The photosynthesis occur in 2 stages
• 1st stage
• energy from sunlight is captured actually in plants ( in leaves).
• The pigment e organelle(chloroplast) contains chemical compound
green “chlorophyll”
• Chlorophyll captures light energy and converts it to a form that is
used in the second stage.

• Water in the chloroplasts is split into hydrogen and oxygen, the

oxygen is given off as a waste product, the hydrogen is used in stage 2
Stage 2
• The cells produce sugar.
• Cells use hydrogen that came from the splitting of H2O in stage
• Cells use CO2 that enters the plant from openings on the under sides
of the leaves.
• Hydrogen and carbon dioxide undergoes some reactions to have a
result C6H12O6 (sugar is produced glucose)
• The other product of photosynthesis is oxygen O2 as it was aresult
from stage 1
The carbon dioxide molecules, and the water molecules are raw
materials (on the left)glucose and oxygen are products.

The sugar that is produced is used as a food, the cells break down sugar
molecules to release energy(to carry out functions, as growing and
making seeds)
Some sugar molecules are made as cellulose for the cell wall. Others the
food stored in roots or stem
