Experiment No: 1

Convection
Name of Experiment: Understanding Heat Transfer in case of Natural
vertically heated cylinder
Objective: To find out heot transfer coefficient of natural convection for
fluid resulting from temperature
Theory: Fluid motion may also occur due to change in density of the
mechanism of heat transfer is known as free or
or concentration gradient. In such a situation, the
refrigerating coils, hot radiotors etc.
natural convection. Heat transfer from pipes, transmission lines,
is practical example offree convection in everyday life.
Experimental Setup:
rectangular duct in
The apparatus (schematic is shown in fiqure 1) consists of brass tube enclosed by a of
vertical mode. The duct is open at top and bottom, ond forms an encloser which serves the purpOse
undisturbed surroundings. One side of it is made of glass/ocrylic for visualization. A heating element is
by
kept as a vertical tube which heats the tube surface. The heat is lost from the tube to surroundings
natural convection. The temperature of the heated surface is measured by seven temperature sensors.
One temperature sensor is used to measure the temperature of ambient. The heat input to the heater
is measured by digital ammeter ond digital voltmeter, and can be varied by dimmerstot.
