Education and inheritance: Traditional dance is also an important tool for education and inheritance.
By teaching dance, people can pass on knowledge to the next generation about cultural, historical, and

Moreover, traditional dance is an art form that nurtures artistic development and creativity. It
showcases the unique movements, rhythms, and costumes that are distinct to a particular culture.
Through the mastery of intricate dance techniques and the expression of emotions, dancers are able to
convey narratives and evoke sentiments. The learning and performing of traditional dances require

different communities. It provides a platform for cultural diplomacy, enabling cultures to connect and
appreciate one another. By showcasing traditional dances to a wider audience, communities can foster
mutual respect, tolerance, and appreciation for diverse cultures. This exchange of artistic expressions
nurtures intercultural dialogue and promotes a more inclusive and harmonious society.
To conclude, traditional dance holds great importance in preserving cultural heritage, nurturing
artistic development, promoting social harmony, and fostering cultural exchange. Its multifaceted
nature contributes to the cultural richness and diversity of a nation or region. Therefore, it is vital to
recognize, support, and preserve traditional dances as an integral part of our cultural legacy[4].
3. Characteristics and cultural connotation of modern dance
3.1 The Origin and Development of Modern Dance
Modern dance originated in the United States and Europe in the late 19th century and the early 20th
century. It is a challenge and subversion of traditional ballet and an important revolution of dance art.
Its birth and development were closely linked with the social, cultural and artistic background of that
time.
At the end of the 19th century, with the advance of the Industrial Revolution, the social structure
and values changed dramatically. People begin to question the traditional art forms and seek for more
real, free and personalized ways of expression. In this context, the modern dance was born.
The founders of modern dance, such as Isadora Duncan in the United States and Mary Weigmann in
Germany, advocated getting away from the strict norms and shackles of ballet and pursuing more
natural body movements and free dance expressions. They emphasize the emotional expression and
personality expression of dance, and pay attention to the integration of dance with other artistic forms
such as music, drama and art.
Over time, modern dance grew into various genres and styles. Such as abstract expressionism,
postmodern dance, environmental dance, etc., these schools and styles have their own unique dance
language and forms of expression. They played an important role in the development of modern dance
and brought new vitality and innovation to the whole dance art.
Around the world, modern dance is widely welcomed and promoted. Many dance colleges and
institutions have offered modern dance courses and produced a large number of excellent dancers and
choreographers[5]. At the same time, modern dance has also won wide recognition and praise in various
art festivals, competitions and performances.
In short, as an important part of dance art, the origin and development of modern dance are closely
related to the development of society, culture and art. It not only brings new forms of expression and
styles to the dance art, but also brings more rich and diversified aesthetic experience to the audience.

3.2 Dance style and expression form of modern dance
Modern dance, as an innovative force in the field of dance in the early 20th century, broke the strict
norms and restrictions of traditional ballet, and provided a broader space for the dancers' creation and
expression. Its unique dance style and form of expression are deeply loved by the audience.
The dance style of modern dance emphasizes individual expression and emotional outpouring. The
dancers show their inner emotional world through their free and smooth movements. This dance style is
not stick to traditional norms and skills, more emphasis on improvisation and natural expression. The
dancers can freely create and perform the dance according to the music, the situation and their own
feelings.
In the form of expression, modern dance integrates a variety of artistic elements, such as music,
drama, art, etc., showing the characteristics of diversification. Dancers can create a unique dance mood
through dance movements, stage setting, lighting, sound effects and other means, and arouse the
resonance of the audience. The works of modern dance often do not have a fixed script or plot, but
rather convey the information and story through the dancer's body language and the expression of
emotion[6].
In addition, the modern dance also emphasizes the interaction between the dance and the audience.
Dancers often communicate directly with the audience on the stage, breaking the line between the stage
and the audience table. This interactive form allows the audience to participate more deeply in the
dance performance and enhance the viewing experience.
Modern dance also differs from traditional ballet in terms of costumes and props. Dancers' costumes
are often simple and comfortable, highlighting the body lines, while the props are designed according
to the needs of the specific works, either as simple items or complex devices. These props and
costumes provide the dancers with more means of expression and enrich the artistic effect of the dance.
In short, modern dance, with its unique dance style and form of expression, brings a brand new
viewing experience to the audience. It not only expands the artistic boundary of the dance, but also
provides a broader space for the dancers to create. In the development of modern dance, many excellent
choreographers and dancers constantly explore and innovate, injected new vitality into the dance art.
3.3 Social concepts and values reflected by modern dance
As an important innovation in the field of dance at the beginning of the 20th century, modern dance
is not only an art form, but also a reflection of social concepts and values. Together, it deeply explores
and reflects on social phenomena, humanity and culture through dance movements, themes and
situations.
Modern dance emphasizes individuality and free expression. Different from the norms and
constraints of traditional ballet, modern dance provides a broader creative space for the dancers and
encourages them to truly show themselves[7]. This respect for individual values and the pursuit of free
expression reflect the importance that modern society attaches to individual rights and independent
thinking.
Modern dance focuses on social issues and the exploration of human nature. Many modern dance
works take real life as the theme, and show social phenomena, human conflict and psychological state
through dance movements and plots. This kind of attention and reflection on social reality reflects the
importance of modern dance's concern for social justice and humanitarianism.
Modern dance also emphasizes the integration of dance with other art forms. This fusion not only
enriches the expression of dance, but also broadens the boundaries of art. Through the cooperation with
other art forms, modern dance can dig deeper and present the theme, and arouse the resonance and
thinking of the audience.
Modern dance emphasizes the innovation and experiment of dance. Many modern dance works
break through the traditional norms and try out new ways of movement, rhythm and expression. This
pursuit of innovation and the attitude to experiments reflect the importance that modern society
attaches to innovative thinking and exploration spirit. The social concepts and values reflected by
modern dance are multi-dimensional, which not only focuses on individual rights, free expression and
social justice, but also emphasizes innovative thinking and cross-artistic cooperation[8]. This kind of
attention to and reflection on social concepts and values makes modern dance become an art form with
profound connotation.

historical and social phenomena. This in-depth exploration and presentation makes the dance works
have more emotional resonance and ideological depth, and trigger the audience's thinking and
resonance.
In addition, the fusion also brings a brand-new stage presentation effect. Through modern stage
technology and lighting and sound effects, the dancers can create a more realistic and vivid dance mood.
The presentation of the stage effect makes the audience more immersed in the world of dance works
and enhances the viewing experience.
