Complex Engineering Problem

Hydrology and Water Resources Management (CE-332)

 Background of Complex Engineering Problem:

Complex engineering problems are devised to improve students' in-depth knowledge and
innovative thinking. It should not be a routine task and may necessitate knowledge from
multiple disciplines. A complex engineering problem in any subject necessitates a thorough
review of the literature. Students of Hydrology and Water Resources Management are
assigned the following tasks in this context

 Complex Engineering Problem:

You are tasked with calculating the PMF hydrograph at a proposed dam site on the Jhelum
River using HEC-HMS for the given PMP Hyetograph. The river's catchment area at the
proposed dam site is (1500+50xRoll no.) km2. The catchment area is made up of 20% agricultural
land, 20% low density residential land with a 25% imperviousness, 30% commercial land with an
85% imperviousness, and 30% forest land with a moderate infiltration rate when thoroughly wetted
soil. Based on the computed PMF hydrograph, create a unit hydrograph for the given
catchment area.

Flood data from another Dam site is provided. Making Use of Flood Frequency Analysis Calculate
floods with a 50-year and 100-year return period.

 HEC-HMS:

The Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) simulates the entire hydrologic processes of
dendritic watershed systems. Many traditional hydrologic analysis procedures, such as event
infiltration, unit hydrographs, and hydrologic routing, are included in the software.

 Solving Procedure:

Step 1:

In the beginning of using the software we have open the file and create a new with rename of
Complex engineering problem there is also an option of adding the description for the project
we are going to make.

Step 2:
In the second step we went into component and select the basin model manager. We can
rename the basin model also. After selecting the basin model select the Sub-basin click the
interface and we can rename the sub-basin in this Complex engineering problem we give one
outlet and on sub- basin the water passes from sub-basin and then finally move towards the
Outlet.

Fig. No 2

Step 3:

In the very next step we click the sub-basin and link their access with the outlet and after
linking it with the outlet we click the downstream and give it access with the outlet. The picture
of the interface is given below.

As we are assigned that the impervious percentage are given of 25 we assumed that for impervious
surfaces the curve number is 98.

We find the initial abstraction value of 0.495 and put all the data in the interface.

Step 4:

Select the sub-basin 1 click the transform the time of concentration are given 20 and storage
coefficient are given the assumed value of 0.9 we take the assumed values from the help desk
of Hec-Hms.

Step 5:

While assigning the components we went into base-flow and initial discharge is given 1 recession
constant of 0.8 and ratio of 0.1.

Step 6:

Select Time series manager click the new and rename it.

Step 7:
In the time series data, we click the subpart of precipitation gages and then its subpart of gage 1.

-Interface-

Step 8:

In gage 1 we give the time interval of 1 hour as we are assigned in this assignment the data
source is manual as we put the values manual so it remains unchanged.

Step 9:

We give the start and finish date and time of the project in the interface given below.

Step 10:
In the table we put all the precipitation over the time intervals data from the values we are assigned.

Step 12:
Select the meter logical manager create new and rename as met 1.

Step 16:

We give the start and finish date and time of the project in the interface given below.

Step 17:

At the end after assigning all the data it’s time to run the system if it doesn’t run that means that
there will b3 some kind of error happened in the previous steps.

RESULTS:

In simulation run we go to their subpart of graph here is the final graph as given below.
