“ Which retrofitting and adaptive reuse strategies are best suited for the upgradation of
Indian stadia facing obsolescence? How can stadium redesign accommodate the
growing functions of a sports arena to create multipurpose public spaces?
1 PROBLEM STATEMENT
0
The need to modernize India's older stadia through adaptive reuse and retrofitting has
become critical to meet current standards. This approach offers a cost-effective
alternative to new construction, enhancing revenue potential with improved facilities. It
supports environmental sustainability by conserving materials and increasing energy
efficiency. Moreover, it preserves cultural heritage, fosters urban revitalization and
promotes flexible, adaptive design strategies. Upgrading stadium facilities is essential
for addressing the infrastructural deficiencies hindering Indian sport; better stadium
design also has the potential to increase spectator attendance, television viewership
and commercial value of the place, thereby supporting a sustainable growth model for
sports in India.
2 GOALS AND OUTCOMES
0
This study seeks to outline possible retrofitting and adaptive reuse solutions which can
meet the growing demands of a sports stadium. It shall identify
a) Efficient building methods which minimize time and wastage
b) Materials which are economic and contextually relevant to the design program
c) Adaptable design strategies to achieve multi purpose sports facilities
3 METHODOLOGY
0
This study requires an extensive review of existing literature on retrofitting building
technologies. An analysis of proposed stadium renovations around the globe, their
functional requirements and construction methods would help identify the most efficient
and relevant redesign methods. The implications of the literature review and case study
would be applied to two cases in the Indian context - Charles Correa’s Sardar
Vallabhbhai Patel stadium in Ahmedabad and Ambedkar stadium in New Delhi.
Explorations of retrofitting and reuse design interventions for the same would be
condensed to outline the design solutions best suited to an Indian context.
