Interview of my

grandmother
Hoor Alsafadi
Introduction
In this presentation, I will be looking
at my Palestinian culture and talking
about how it has changed over time.
To help me compare my culture with
how it used to be, I have interviewed
my grandmother .
Family life
What did the place where you grew up look like then and
how has that place change sinceyou grew up there?

“We used to live in a big house because we had a big family. It has changed
because now we still have a big family but it is not really rusty or dirty it’s
really clean and not rusty.”

What did you do in the weekends then and what do

you do now, has it changed?

“My whole family used to gather every Friday and my dad used to wake
up early and go to work early to provide us food and shelter. No it hasn’t
changed except for the fact that my father passed away.”
The role of women in society
What was the role of women in your society?

“Women in the past rarely got to complete school and

studying so most women helped with the house work
and cleaning and was not expected to be a doctor,
engineer or a good paying job.”
communication
How do you communicate with others
when you were younger?

”In the past we didn’t have any phones or developed

technology so we used to visit the people we want to talk to
and sometimes use the red telephone boxes on the steeets.”
Education
Did you go to school? If yes, what was it like? How did you
get there? If no, why did you not attend and what did you
do during the day instead?

“Yes I did go to school. I used to walk everyday to school since

my family didn’t have a car. However I did not go to college I
finished high school and after i tutored young girls in my house
so I used to spend my days like that.”
Expectations from
society/family
What expectations do you feel you
had growing up in your culture?

“I feel that the expectations that I had growing up is to

be a good cleaner, cooker, house keeper and so on. I
didn’t have much expectations like my brothers.”
Expectations from
society/family
what expectations did you have that you feel don’t
apply to me nowadays?

“Yes,because in the past I was expected to clean and

cook but now you are expected to be whatever you
want maybe a doctor maybe an engineer or anything
you want but in the past I didn’t have the ability of that.”
