Managing Global Pandemics
Throughout history, disease outbreaks have ravaged humanity, sometimes changing the course
of history and, at times, signalling the end of entire civilizations.
WHO Defines a pandemic as “an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a vast area, crossing
international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people”.
The classical definition includes nothing about population immunity, virology or disease
severity. By this definition, pandemics can be said to occur annually in each of the temperate
southern and northern hemispheres, given that seasonal epidemics cross international
boundaries and affect a large number of people.

It's better to be prepared for something that doesn't happen than unprepared for something that
does. Many organizations today are faced with many challenges: seeing through the current
pandemic situation while sustaining and growing businesses, getting prepared for another
adverse situation such as a lockdown and developing strategies to successfully manage such
pandemics that may occur in the future.
Your Task
Assume that you are a leading Management and HR Consultancy firm in the country with local
and global expertise equipped with a professional team with diverse exposure and experience
in management consultancy at the strategic level. You have been invited to pitch for a
consultancy project to advise a leading private sector company in Sri Lanka on managing the
current situation and aggressively growing business and also device strategies for BCP
(Business Continuity Plan) for the coming five years and also other related HR strategies to
manage a pandemic in the future.
Scope of the project
You are expected to make a presentation pitch to the CEO and Board of Directors of the
company at the next board meeting covering the following:
1. Providing insights into the current pandemic with research and statistics on the levels
of impact both locally and globally, particularly for the related industry.
2. Managing an uninterrupted business in the current environment.
3. Current employee related issues faced by the company and recommendation for same.
4. Sustaining and growing business in 2021 and 2022.
5. Recommendation of inclusions to the BCP (only related to a pandemic situation).
6. Appointing a steering committee and leading the project.
7. Detailed action plan with timelines and costing.
