Unit 1, Lesson C
Listening: Meeting an old friend
Diana: Excuse me, do you work here? I'm looking for the manager.
Carlos: I'm sorry, I don't work here, but I can get the manager. Hey, Lisa? A
customer needs to talk to you.
Lisa Hello, can I help you?
Diana: Hi. I'm Diana Carter. We spoke on the phone.
Carlos: Wait… Diana Carter? Did you go to Alexander High School, and was
your best friend Rita Rios?
Diana: Yes… Hey! You're Carlos Rios! I was best friends with your older sister
Rita in high school!
Carlos: Yes! When did we last see each other?
Diana: Hmm… I think it was about… twelve years ago. At your sister's
graduation party.
Carlos: That's right! Wow! What a nice surprise. So, where are you living?
Diana: Right now, I'm living down the street, on Ditmars Avenue. But I usually
live in Middlestown. I teach at Middlestown University.
Carlos: Wow, I go to Middlestown University!
Diana: How nice! Are you a full-time student?
Carlos: No, I also work. I'm an IT worker, but I don't really like to work on
computers all day. I like helping people, though, so I want to be a
nurse. I'm studying nursing.
Diana: Wow! I teach nursing!
Carlos: Are you teaching right now?
Diana: No, I'm not. I don't teach in the summers. I'm writing a book.
Carlos: About nursing?
Diana: No, a book of short stories. Just about my life.
Carlos: Interesting! Is it your first book?
Diana: No, it's not. I wrote a book last year. This bookstore is selling it. It's
right over there! Which reminds me. Lisa, you wanted me to sign your
copy of my book?
2
Lisa Yes, that would be great. I read it and really loved it.
Diana: Thank you! I'd be happy to sign it.
Lisa Great! Thank you.
Diana: So, Carlos, you don’t work here, but you are friends with Lisa, aren’t
you?
Carlos: She's my girlfriend! We met in college.
Diana: That's great!... Wait, it's 12:30? I'm sorry, I have to go. I need to meet
my mom for lunch! It was great to see you again, Carlos. And nice to
meet you, Lisa. Carlos, say hello to Rita for me!
Carlos: I will. It was nice seeing you again.

Unit 2, Lesson C
Listening: At the train station
Jorge: Excuse me.
Attendant: Yes, hello, sir. How can I help you?
Jorge: When is the next train to Atlanta? My train is delayed. There's
something wrong with it, so now it's not leaving until 2 p.m. But I need
to be in Atlanta at noon! I have to change there, and the train leaves at
noon!
Attendant: I see. Well, I'm sorry, that is the next train to Atlanta. No other trains
are leaving before 2. Is there anything else I can do for you?
Jorge: Maybe. I'm just changing at Atlanta. But I'm trying to get to Savannah.
Attendant: Oh! Are you going there on vacation?
Jorge: No, my parents live there. My mother's 70th birthday is today, and I
really want to go to her party tonight. It's a surprise.
Attendant: That's lovely! Well, we have direct trains going to Savannah from this
station. You don't have to change trains.
Jorge: That sounds great!
Attendant: All right. Let's find you a train from Richmond to Savannah. Hmm. Oh,
no.
Jorge: What?
Attendant: You just missed the 8:30! It left Platform 9 three minutes ago.
Jorge: Oh, no! When's the next one?
Attendant: They leave every hour and a half, so there's another one leaving at 10
a.m. You'd be in Savannah by 5 p.m. today.
Jorge: 5 p.m.? That sounds perfect. The party starts at 7! How much is a
direct ticket to Savannah?
Attendant: It's $60.
Jorge: Wonderful! Can I pay by credit card?
Attendant: Of course.
Jorge: Great. Here's my card.
4
Attendant: And here's your ticket. The train leaves from Platform 12 at 10 a.m. Is
there anything else I can help you with?
Jorge: Actually, there is. Where can I buy a birthday card? I forgot to get a
card for my mom!
Attendant: There's a nice gift shop across the street. Good luck!
Jorge: Thank you!... Hey, sis? I'm going to make it to mom's party! Can you
pick me up at the train station at 5 this evening?... Great! Thank you!
You're the best sister ever!

Unit 3, Lesson C
Listening: Shopping for a present
Ryan: Hey Jana, let's go in here.
Jana: Homes and More? We don't need anything for our house, Ryan.
Ryan: It's not for us! My co-worker Jason and his wife Tomoko just bought a
house. And they're going to have a baby!
Jana: That's wonderful!
Ryan: Yes! They're having a party this weekend to show everyone their new
house. We're supposed to bring a gift – something for their home.
Jana: Oh, OK. Well, what does he like?
Ryan: Hmm… He has a lot of plants in his office...
Jana: A plant? I don't know... They're going to have a baby soon. They may
prefer a book about being parents.
Sales assistant: Hi, can I help you?
Ryan: Yes. We're looking for a present for a co-worker.
Sales assistant: Are you looking for anything in particular?
Ryan: Not really.
Sales assistant: Well, this glass vase is very popular.
Jana: The vase is beautiful, but he and his wife are going to have a baby
soon, so… maybe something that doesn't break easily.
Sales assistant: Well, what about this serving plate? It's wood. Very difficult to break.
Ryan: That plate is perfect!
Jana: How much is it?
Sales assistant: It's $100.
Ryan: Wow! That's… kind of expensive.
Jana: Can we just look around a little?
Sales assistant: Of course.
Ryan: Hey, look at this blanket! It's nice. And it's a bargain!
Jana: OK, but will it look good in his house?
Ryan: I don't know… Oh, this is so difficult!
Jana: Hey! How about a gift card? Then they can choose their own gift.
6
Ryan: That's a perfect idea!
Sales assistant: Who's next, please?
Ryan: Hello again. I'd like to buy a $30 gift card, please.
Sales assistant: OK. That will be $30 cash.
Ryan: Oh. I only have my credit card.
Sales assistant: I'm sorry, we only take cash for gift cards. No credit cards.
Ryan: OK. On second thought, I'll take this blanket.
Sales assistant: OK. Can you put your card in, please?
Ryan: Sure.
Sales assistant: And can you enter your PIN please?... OK, here's your receipt, and
here is the blanket.
Ryan: Thanks! I hope they like it!

Unit 4, Lesson C
Listening: Planning to meet
Flora: Hey, Amelia! It's so nice to see your face! I'm so glad we could video
chat today.
Amelia: Yes, Flora! Long time no see!
Flora: Well, I think that's going to change very soon! I'm coming to Boston
next month for my brother Hector's graduation! We can finally see
each other in person!
Amelia: That's fantastic! When are you going to be here?
Flora: Well, I'm arriving on May 23rd, and I'm leaving on May 31st. So I'll be
there for about a week and a half.
Amelia: That's so exciting, Flora! Would you like to go dancing? You know, like
we did when we were in college?
Flora: That sounds great!
Amelia: Yay! So, how does May 23rd look, Flora? It's a Friday.
Flora: Well, my flight's landing really late on the 23rd – around 11 p.m. I think
I'll be too tired to do anything. I'm sorry, Amelia.
Amelia: Oh, right. Well, how about the 24th? It's a Saturday.
Flora: I'll be busy with Hector’s graduation that day, and then we're having a
party afterwards. How about the 25th?
Amelia: Um, going dancing on a Sunday? I don't know. I don't think the dance
club is open on Sunday.
Flora: Oh, yeah. That's no good. Hey! How about the 29th, Amelia?
Amelia: Hold on, Flora, let me check my phone… Oh, no, I can't. I'm going to a
concert with my cousin. We've had tickets for months. How's the 30th?
Flora: The 30th? Hang on a minute… Oh, no, sorry. I'm having dinner with my
family. I'm sorry, that week's really busy.
Amelia: Oh, that's too bad.
Flora: Hey! I have an idea! Why don't you come to my brother's graduation
party on the 24th, and then we can all go dancing afterwards?
Amelia: That's a terrific idea!
8
Flora: My aunt is having the party at her house. She lives right across from
Seasons Restaurant – you know, where I worked in college. The party's
starting at 4 p.m., and it's probably going to end around 9:30 p.m.
Amelia: I'd love to see your family again, and your brother's a lot of fun.
Saturday the 24th, right? Let me put it in my calendar.
Flora: Wonderful! I can't wait to see you!

Unit 5, Lesson C
Listening: Leaving work early
Sandra: OK, Dean Our how-to presentation for French is almost done! We just
need to add a few more sentences about how to bake a cake, and a
few pictures, and...
Dean: Oh, no! Is it 4:30 already, Sandra?
Sandra: Um, yes. Is everything OK?
Dean: Not really! My little sister's school play is tonight. It's at 5, and her
school is across town!
Sandra: OK. So why don't you go? If you leave in the next five minutes, you can
make it!
Dean: But we're still not finished with the presentation. And we need to copy
the directions to give to the other students. It's a big part of our grade.
We might not do well in French class if the presentation isn't ready
tomorrow!
Sandra: Don't worry about it! I'll finish the presentation and print the
directions. We're almost done, anyway.
Dean: Are you sure? I don't want to make you do all the work.
Sandra: It's no problem! You already did a lot – you worked on it when I didn't
come to school because I had a doctor's appointment!
Dean: Hmm… Maybe I should call my mom. I'll tell her I'll be late. We'll be
done with the presentation in half an hour. Oh… but my sister will be
so disappointed if I don't see the whole play! She's been practicing for
months!
Sandra: Listen, how about you leave right now? I'll add the missing sentences,
and make the copies, and you can add in the pictures. French class
isn't until 11 a.m. tomorrow. There will still be time to finish it
tomorrow.
Dean: But I have science class tomorrow morning.
Sandra: Maybe you should come to school early, then. You only have to add a
few pictures.
10
Dean: My science class is at 8 a.m.
Sandra: Oh, that's right. Hmm…
Dean: Hey! I know! Could you please email me the link to the presentation?
That way, I can put the pictures in the presentation tonight, after the
play. It'll only take a minute.
Sandra: Are you sure? Do you want me to find them and put them in?
Dean: No, I can do it. Don't worry about it. And thank you so much for
everything. I have to go!
Sandra: Oh, it doesn't matter. Hey, how about this: I'll make the copies and
add the pictures, and you can present it in class! I don't like talking in
class.
Dean: That sounds good! See you tomorrow! And thanks again!
11
Unit 6, Lesson C
Listening: Advising a friend
Matheus: Hey, Victor. I got your text and came right over.
Victor: Hi, Matheus. Thanks for coming.
Matheus: It's not a problem. So, what's going on?
Victor: Well, I just found out that I have to move. I only have two weeks to
find a new apartment.
Matheus: What?! That's terrible! What happened?
Victor: I rent this apartment, and the owner sold the building. Now the new
owner wants to charge a lot more money for rent. I can't pay it.
Matheus: How awful! I'm really sorry to hear that.
Victor: I know. I'm just shocked. What do you think I should do?
Matheus: Well, I think you should talk to the new owner. You've lived here a
long time. Maybe he'll give you a discount on the rent.
Victor: No, I don't think I should do that. He had a meeting with the people
who live in the building when he bought it. He said everyone had to
pay the new, higher rent.
Matheus: That's a shame. But you haven't been happy in this apartment for a
long time.
Victor: That's true. It has a lot of annoying problems. The shower and sink
don't work at least once a week, and sometimes in the winter, there's
no heat! And we don't always have hot water.
Matheus: Hey! I know. My boss owns a building, and he's looking for someone to
rent an apartment there right now! It's a modern building. It's only a
few years old. Would you like me to give you his number?
Victor: That would be great! Thank you.
Matheus: You should call him soon, though. The apartment building is really
nice. I went to his apartment for a holiday party last year. And tell him
we're friends – he might give you a discount on the rent! He's very
nice, and he thinks it's important to help people.
12
Victor: Thanks. That's a good idea. You know, I was pretty upset and
frightened when I heard I had to move, but maybe this will be a good
thing.
Matheus: I think you're right. Here, I'll text you his phone number.
Victor: Thanks. I'll call him now.
13
Unit 7, Lesson C
Listening: At the doctor's office
Jasmin: Hi, Dr. Lee. Thank you for seeing me today.
Doctor: Come in, Yasmin. Please, take a seat. So, what's the problem?
Jasmin: Well, I feel sick, and I'm not getting better. I have a headache and my
hands, face, and arms are itchy. It's really uncomfortable, I can't
concentrate, and I can't sleep.
Doctor: I see. When did this problem start?
Jasmin: Well, it started right after I started my new job – about three weeks
ago.
Doctor: Can I take a look?
Jasmin: Of course.
Doctor: Hmm. Well, your eyes look a little red, but your hands and arms look
OK. Can I look in your mouth?
Jasmin: Sure.
Doctor: Hmm… Do you have any allergies?
Jasmin: No, none! I'm really worried. I've missed a lot of work because I've
been so sick. When I stay home from work, I get better, but then when
I go back to work, I get sick again.
Doctor: Hmm. What's your new job?
Jasmin: I'm a gardener for a private company.
Doctor: And how do you like it?
Jasmin: Being a gardener's OK. I like working with the plants and flowers. But
it's hard work. And I have to work long hours.
Doctor: I see. I need you to take a few tests. And I think you'll need to see
another doctor.
Jasmin: Oh, no! Really? Do you think I have a cold or the flu? Is it serious?
Doctor: I don't think it's anything to worry about – I think you have allergies. I
won't know until you take some allergy tests, but you might be allergic
to flowers or grass. It's pretty common.
Jasmin: Oh, OK. So do I need to get a new job?
14
Doctor: No, I don't think so, but the allergy doctor will know more. There's a
really good one down the street. I'll give you her information. And I'll
give you a prescription that will help with the itchy parts of your body.
Jasmin: Thank you.
Doctor: Here. Take one of these pills, but only when you need them. Take
them with a lot of water. No more than one every eight hours.
Jasmin: No more than one every eight hours. Got it.
Doctor: You can take a painkiller for your headache. You can buy one at the
drugstore. And here's the information about Doctor Buchanan, a great
allergy doctor. She's the best.
Jasmin: Thanks!
Doctor: OK, well, good luck!
15
Unit 8, Lesson C
Listening: Accepting an apology
Daniel: Hi, Mom.
Mom: Oh my goodness, Daniel! Where have you been! I've been so worried!
Daniel: I'm really sorry, Mom. I didn't mean to make you worry.
Mom: It doesn't matter, but you were supposed to be home hours ago, and
you haven't answered my calls or texts.
Daniel: I know. I'm sorry, but I couldn't answer my phone or send text
messages – I don't have my phone anymore. Or my bag.
Mom: What? What happened?
Daniel: Well, I went to a café with some friends after school.
Mom: Wait, what? Daniel, you have to tell me when you do things like that! I
had no idea where you were!
Daniel: I'm sorry, Mom! But I was so worried about tomorrow's math test that
I forgot to text you. It's all I've been thinking about.
Mom: OK. Tell me what happened.
Daniel: We studied and had some coffee for a few hours. Then my friends left,
and I went to use the bathroom, but I left my things on the table.
When I came back, my bag was gone. I think it was stolen.
Mom: Daniel, you have to watch your things!
Daniel: I know, Mom! I'm so sorry. And I'm sorry I didn't return your
messages.
Mom: Don't worry about it. You can't return messages without a phone! So,
what did you do?
Daniel: Well, I asked the server at the café, but he hadn't seen anyone but me
and my friends at the table since we sat down. I meant to ask him to
use the phone at the café, to call you. But I couldn't because I don't
know your phone number – it's in my phone.
Mom: Well, it's not your fault. No one knows anyone's phone numbers these
days! Anyway, we should go to the police station and report it.
Daniel: That's a good idea.
16
Mom: I can't believe your bag was stolen. Oh, wait a minute. I'm getting a
text… from your phone… Hey! Your bag wasn't stolen!
Daniel: Wait, what?
Mom: I just got a text from your friend Rachel. From your phone. She took
your bag by mistake – she forgot she didn't bring hers. It was an
accident.
Daniel: Oh, wow! That's great!... Mom, I'm really sorry I worried you.
Mom: Don't worry about it. But please tell me where you go next time. And
please take your bag with you to the bathroom from now on!

Unit 9, Lesson C
Listening: Calling people on the phone
Receptionist: Good morning, Harley University Student Center. Can I help you?
Sandro: Hello. Can I speak to Charles Alvarez, please?
Receptionist: I'm afraid he's not available. Can I take a message?
Sandro: Sure. Could you please tell him that Sandro Sousa called? I'd like to
meet with him about college majors.
Receptionist: OK. Was that Sandro Santos?
Sandro: No, Sandro Sousa – S-A-N-D-R-O S-O-U-S-A.
Receptionist: OK. Sandro Sousa. Got it. And does he have your number?
Sandro: No. It's 555-0111.
Receptionist: 555-0111. OK. I'll have him call you… Oh, wait! Here he is. Just wait a
minute. I'll put you through to his office.
…
Charles: Hello?
Sandro: Hi, is this Charles Alvarez?
Charles: Yes?
Sandro: It's Sandro Sousa.
Charles: Hey, Sandro! How can I help you?
Sandro: Well, remember when you watched the game with my dad at our
house? And I asked you about college majors?
Charles: Yes?
Sandro: You offered to help me choose one. So I thought I'd give you a call. Is
now a good time?
Charles: Oh, right! I have a meeting soon, but I can talk for a few minutes. So,
your dad told me you really love acting.
Sandro: Well, I do. But if I become an actor, I probably won't earn a good
salary.
Charles: I see. What do your parents say?
Sandro: My mom wants me to be a doctor, but they need several years of
training. I'd prefer not to be in school for that long.
18
Charles: I'm sorry, Sandro. I have to go to my meeting. Why don't you come to
the university and visit some classes? If you talk to students and
professors, you'll learn more about the majors.
Sandro: That'd be great! Thank you!
Charles: No problem. How's Thursday at 9:30 a.m.?
Sandro: Sorry, I didn't catch that. Was that Thursday at 10:30 a.m.?
Charles: No, 9:30 a.m.
Sandro: Let me check… that works! Thank you so much.
Charles: I'm happy to help. I'll see you Thursday. We can meet at my office, and
then go to the classes.
Sandro: Sounds great. Thanks again! Goodbye.
Charles: Bye.
19
Unit 10, Lesson C
Listening: Returning goods to a store
Karla: Hello. Could you help me, please?
Sales assistant: Yes, of course. How can I help you?
Karla: Well, I'd like to return this sweater, please.
Sales assistant: OK. Do you have a receipt?
Karla: No, I'm sorry, I don't. It was a gift from my grandmother.
Sales assistant: I'm sorry, but I can't give you a refund without a receipt. Is there
something wrong with it?
Karla: Um, not really.
Sales assistant: Does it fit?
Karla: Yes.
Sales assistant: Is it torn?
Karla: No.
Sales assistant: Then what's the problem?
Karla: Well, my grandmother got the same sweater for me and my sister. So
we could match in our holiday photos.
Sales assistant: That sounds like a lovely gift.
Karla: Yes, but my sister is eleven. I'm… not. This sweater seems like it's for a
young child.
Sales assistant: I see. Well, you can exchange it.
Karla: Um, I'd prefer to get a refund. I think that this store is for… children,
right?
Sales assistant: Yes, this is a clothing store for children 12 and under.
Karla: I'm 20.
Sales assistant: Well, then you're lucky that you can still wear such small clothes!
Karla: Um, can I speak to the manager, please?
Sales assistant: Of course.
…
Manager: Hello, what seems to be the problem?
20
Karla: My grandmother bought me this sweater, but I think it's for someone
a little younger than me. I'd like to return it.
Manager: But she doesn't have the receipt.
Karla: It was a gift.
Manager: Do you know if she bought it in the store or online?
Karla: I think she bought it online. She does most of her shopping online.
Manager: If you give me her email address, I can look up the order.
Karla: Oh, great! It's [email protected].
Manager: OK… I found it. Yes, it looks like she bought two of these on October
11th. So would you still like a refund for the sweater, or would you like
to exchange it for something else?
Karla: Actually, I've changed my mind. I need a present for my sister's
birthday, and she would love that pink purse. It's her favorite color.
Can I exchange it for the purse?
Manager: Absolutely. Let's see. The sweater was $29.99 and the purse is…
$29.99!
Karla: That's great! Thank you so much.
Manager: You're welcome. I'm happy to help.
21
Unit 11, Lesson C
Listening: Lost in a building
Receptionist: Hello, welcome to Fine Hospital. How can I help you?
Ariana: Is this the information desk?
Receptionist: Yes, it is.
Ariana: Great! Could you please tell me where room 405 is? That's my sister's
room. I'm here to see her and her new baby.
Receptionist: Room 405 is on the fourth floor, but you need to go to the visitor
check-in desk first and get your visitor ID.
Ariana: Oh, OK. Where's that?
Receptionist: The visitor's check-in desk is over there, by the gift shop and the cash
machine.
Ariana: OK, thank you.
Receptionist: So once you check in, you can go to room 405. Take the elevator to the
fourth floor. Turn right. Go down the corridor. Show your ID to the
nurse at the help desk. It's right next to Room 405. Both of them are
on the right.
Ariana: So can I just check? Take the elevator to the fourth floor, turn left, and
go down the corridor…
Receptionist: No, turn right.
Ariana: OK, elevator to the fourth floor, turn right, and down the corridor.
Show my ID to the nurse. Room 405 is on the right.
Receptionist: Yes, that's right.
…
Ariana: Hey, Stephanie! How are you? How's the baby?
Stephanie: Shh! He's sleeping. But I'm good.
Ariana: Oh my goodness! He's beautiful.
Stephanie: Thanks, Ariana. And thank you for visiting.
Ariana: Of course! How could I not see my favorite sister? And my first
nephew! What's it like being a mom?
Stephanie: It's wonderful but… there's so much I don't know!
22
Ariana: I'm sure you'll be fine. Listen, can I get you anything?
Stephanie: Actually, would you mind getting me some chocolate? You know how
much I love sweets.
Ariana: Absolutely! Where can I get some?
Stephanie: There should be some in the cafeteria.
Ariana: OK. How do I get to the cafeteria?
Stephanie: Go down the corridor, turn left, and take the elevator to the second
floor. Then turn left again and go through the door. It's straight ahead.
Ariana: OK. Down the corridor, turn right…
Stephanie: No, turn left.
Ariana: Ah, OK. Down the corridor, turn left, elevator to the sixth floor…
Stephanie: No, the second.
Ariana: OK. Elevator to the second floor, turn left, and through the door.
Stephanie: That's right!
Ariana: OK, I'll be right back.
Stephanie: Thank you so much!
23
Unit 12, Lesson C
Listening: Making plans with a friend
Ben: Hey, Reggie. It's really late. You should get to bed.
Reggie: I can't, Ben! We have that exam tomorrow, and I totally forgot to
study.
Ben: What exam? Maybe it's in one of your other classes, but I don't have
an exam tomorrow.
Reggie: Yes, we do! We have our English exam!
Ben: I'm sorry, but I think it's next Monday, not tomorrow. We have an
essay due on Wednesday, but not an exam.
Reggie: You're absolutely right – we have to hand in an essay on Wednesday.
But we also have an English exam. Tomorrow.
Ben: I'm not sure about that. Let me text Jeremiah. He makes a note of
every assignment the teacher gives us. He'll know when the test is.
Reggie: OK. That's a good idea.
…
Ben: OK, I just heard back. Jeremiah says the English exam is next Tuesday.
Hmm… I don't think so…
Reggie: Write him back, Ben. Tell him you think it's next Monday, and I think
it's tomorrow.
Ben: OK, Reggie…
Reggie: Oh, I'm so worried! What if I fail the exam?
Ben: You won't fail. You're one of the best students in the class! You could
probably take the test right now and pass it.
Reggie: That's not true. Oh, no, I'm going to fail!
Ben: Relax, Reggie. It's going to be OK. If you fail, which you won't, just
study harder next time. And put the exam date in your phone's
calendar… Oh, Jeremiah just texted me back.
Reggie: And?
Ben: He says that our math exam is next Monday, the English exam is next
Tuesday, and tomorrow is a practice test in English. Not the real test.
24
And he said we have to hand in an essay Wednesday, which we
already knew.
Reggie: Is he sure? Maybe you should ask Yvette.
Ben: He said he'd checked with Yvette, and she told him the same thing.
Reggie: I'm still not sure.
Ben: Wait, he just sent me another text. He says we should check the class
website. He says the class schedule is on there.
Reggie: OK, I'm checking now… And… he's right! The practice exam is
tomorrow, and the real exam is next Tuesday!
Ben: So… we were both wrong. Oh, hey, I just got another text from
Jeremiah. He said next time we should write down the dates.
Reggie: Whew! The test isn't tomorrow. What a relief!
Ben: See? I told you. And now you're going to be really prepared! Which
reminds me, could you please help me study?
Reggie: Sure, but not right now. I'm going to bed. Goodnight!
25
