ABSTRACT
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a program which was
established by ITF in 1973 under the direct coordination of the Nigeria Universities
Commission (NUC), National Commission for College of Education (NCCE) and
National Board for Technical Education to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical
skills required for employment in industry by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.
This report gives a summary of the work done at Sapir Project (Architecture +
construction) and experience gained. The writing of the report started by describing the
meaning of SIWES, its origin, its scope, its objectives and the roles played by various
entities in making the program a success. I shed light on the organization and mode of
operation, experiences and likewise challenges.

INTRODUCTION
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a program which was established
by ITF in 1973 under the direct coordination of the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC),
National Commission for College of Education (NCCE) and National Board for Technical
Education to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills required for employment in
industry by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.
Under decree 47 0f 1971, the ITF was established with a view to promoting and encouraging the
acquisition of skill in industry and commerce as well as to generate a pool of indigenous trained
manpower which would be sufficient to meet the needs of Nigeria economy.
The fund in its policy statement, published in 1973, inserted a clause dealing with the issues of
practical skills among the population, it provides that the fund will seek to work out a
cooperative machinery with industry’ where students in institution of higher learning may
acquire training industry and commerce with support in their area of study. The fund will support
mid –career attachment by contributing to the allowances payable to the students.
The scheme was therefore established to bridge the gap between theory and practical's and its
particular to students of Engineering technology, environmental studies, sciences, agriculture as
well as technical and business studies and related discipline in Nigeria institution of higher
learning. Commission (NUC) took up the financial responsibility for the industrial attachment of
universities while National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) took up the financial
responsibilities for industrial attachment of polytechnic, colleges of Education etc. due to
operational problems, the federal government agreed to fund the scheme once again in 1985.
7
The administration of SIWES under the ITF started again in 1985 and following bodies were
involved in SIWES management: the Federal Government, the Industrial training Fund, the
institution of higher learning, Employers, the NUC, the NBTE and the NCCE.
One of the primary goals of the SIWES is to help students integrate leadership development into
the experimental learning process. Students are expected to learn and develop basic non-profit
leadership skills through mentoring relationship with innovative non-profit leaders.
However, as a result of the additional burden the scheme brought on the ITF through the years,
the fund was withdraw in respect of all polytechnic and colleges of technology throughout the
country with effect from 1979. The ITF notified the participating universities that, it will be
withdrawing from financing the students allowance as from January 1980 Consequently upon the
withdrawal the national universities commission (NUC) took up the financial responsibility for
the industrial attachment of universities while National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)
took up the financial responsibilities for industrial attachment of polytechnic, colleges of
Education etc due to operational problems, the federal government agreed to fund the scheme
once again in 1985.

BACKGROUND
The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES), also known as Industrial
Training is a compulsory Skills training program designed to expose and prepare
students of Nigerian Universities, and other institutions.
The scheme provides students the great eventuality of introducing and showing up
themselves to the needed experience in handling the best equipment and machinery that
are usually not available in their institution. It supports students and makes them
dependent.
Before the foundation of the scheme, there was a growing thought among industrialists,
that graduates of institutions of higher learning having inadequate practical background
studies preparatory for employment in industries.
Thus employers were of the opinion that the theoretical education in higher institutions
wasn’t liable to the needs of the employers of labor.
9
OBJECTIVES
i. SIWES gives room for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire
industrial skills and experiences in their field of study.
ii. Prepare the students for the industrial work practices they are likely to
encounter after graduation.
iii. Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and
machinery that may not available in their institutions.
iv. Make the epidemic from school to the world of work easier and enhance the
chances of students’ contact for later job placement
v. SIWES gives students an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work
scenarios thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.
vi. To provide an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire
skills and experience in the course of their study especially in Engineering and
allied fields while in school.

vii. To provide the students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work
situation thereby bridging the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge
viii. To enhance and strengthen employers involvement in the entire educational
process and preparing students for environmental involvement in the industry.
ix. To prepare students for the working conditions they are to meet after graduation.
x. To make the transition from school to work much easier and enhance students
contact for their later job placement.
xi. To expose students to work methods and machinery that may not be
available in educational institution.
xii. To offer students the challenges of their future career.

CHAPTER THREE
Work Actually Carried Out During Attachment
In this chapter I’ll be summarizing my experience during my SIWES attachment in few detail
paragraphs.
Remodeling of Offices:
Due to the character of the office we were to rebuilding and make correction in the layout of the
offices and the furniture in the office too were changed. We had to get an Architectural design
that shows the desired look proposed to be carried out at the office and 3d design (3 Dimension)
view of the proposed building. Then the QS had to get the cost for the needed materials after
1

which we had to get an approval for us to start the project. After getting the approval for the
project and it was approved we started the project.
Installation of Sound Proof System
This is the first part of the project that we carry out during the remodeling of the offices.
This due to the request of the client to prevent sound from travel in the building. Materials used
during the construction of the sound proof system.
a) 1.2mx3m POP (Gypsy Board),
b) Fiber glass (Rock Wool)
c) Study 60mm
d) 1 screw nails (Black Screw Nail)
e) Installment screw nails
f) KKG screw nails
g) Fishers
h) Stud 75mm
i) Paint
We started with the installation of the POP board on the walls with the use of the 1” screw nail,
first of all, then arrange all the STUD which is arrange in a regular pattern after which the rock
wool (fiber glass) is being installed carefully into the already arrange profiled stud then the
board was attached to the face.
After this we applied already mixed POP paint to the surface of the board for screeding purpose
to achieve a smooth surface on the wall that’s newly made and then we apply paint on it to give
a nice view and a nice finishing on the new wall.

2) Installation of metallic suspended ceiling
This is another phase of the work this was achieved with metallic plate welded together and
spayed and installed in the reception part of the building
Materials used
a) Metal plate
b) 50mm pipe
c) Paint

3) Installation of SPC floors
These floors are installed in pattern depending on the outcome design you want to achieve.
During my SIWES we based on two major design or pattern
The first design is the straight pattern; the floors are arranged either horizontally or vertically in
a consistent manner
The second design is the zigzag pattern: I gave it this name due to its outcome the looks tends
to be in a zigzag manner … this is arranged both vertically and horizontally... It has two sides
(types) both the A and the B. so it’s arranged in a lock manner.
4) Installation of wire, cable wires and trunk
During my siwes we were able to run wires and cable wires and trunk . what we basically did
was to run Condit where the wire are being pass through
And also we run surface trunk for the passing of cables wire in the building , cables for different
purposes

5) Screeding
This is the process of applying mixtures of POP cement water and glue to the surface of a wall
or any surface at all to get a smooth feeling/Texture on the surface it’s being applied to ******
This has to happen first before painting because its provide a uniform smooth surface for
convenient of the clients and for a better finishing as professionalism calls
6) Painting and Spraying of Doors
Due to the maintenance we carried out in the building we had to paint the building all over again
the space that has been scratched for fine finishing.

7) Supplies of furniture
We order for furniture and also consulted some of our furniture man so as build some of the
furniture we needed for the design we are aiming to achieve . so we closed deals and proceed into
the construction of the furniture
Also we got our orders too and place them in th positions they are required
8) Installation And Fixing Of Air Conditioner

9
We also fixed some Air conditions to achieve this we had to invite a specialist in the aspect that
helped in the installation of new ones and the refilling of Ac gas and fixing of faulty parts of the
Ac.
9) Installation of Wall Cladding
Wall cladding is of woods or SPC on the on the wall to beautify the wall depending on the design
the clients want
Metal quide for piller
This a metallic structur build tocover the pille side and the beautify it
