FAST FACTS
ABOUT THE STADIUM
Luzhniki Stadium was built on the bank of the Mosvka
River opposite Vorobyovy Gory in 1956 with an
original capacity of 101,000. Until 1991, it was known
as the Lenin Central Stadium. It hosted the opening
and the closing ceremonies of the 1980 Summer
Olympics, the first ever Games in the country's
history.

In 1997, following the reconstruction it got a roof and

was certified as a five-star venue by UEFA. It hosted
the 1999 UEFA Cup final and the 2008 Champions
League final.

The most recent upgrade turned it into an exclusively

football stadium, with the running tracks removed and
two media screens, visible from every corner, added.

The renovated stadium boasts four restaurants

and more than 200 catering points.

While the overall arena size following the reconstruc-

tion is 221,000 sq m, the sports compound's territory
totals more than 159 hectares.
