Test 07
Read the following text and answer the questions.
Senith and Tharuki were visiting their uncle's house near the sea. One morning, their uncle
offered to take them to Smuggler's Cave. At first, Tharuki refused to go.
"I'm not interested in caves," she said. "They're dark and cold. I want to go to the beach."
" I promise to take you to the beach in the afternoon, " their uncle said. " Let's go to the cave this
morning. You'll enjoy hearing the story of the smugglers."
"Of course!" replied their uncle. "But stay near me. There are lots of tunnels. Smugglers used
to hide here. Once, a group of smugglers got lost for a week!"
"Imagine being here for a week!" said Senith. "It would be really scary."
They started exploring the dark tunnels. After an hour, their uncle started to look worried.
"I forgot to bring a torch," he said. "I don't know where we are."

Test 15
Read the following text and answer the questions given below.
Four of the planets - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune - have a lot in common: they are
giants compared to the other planets, and they are all gaseous. They are mostly made up of
hydrogen and helium, with small amounts of other chemical elements. None of them have
solid surfaces, and when we look at them, we see their colourful gas atmospheres, but deep
below the surface are small, round centers of rock. As a result of their size and make up, these
four planetary giants are often described as the gas giants.
The methane gas in Uranus and Neptune gives these two planets their blue - green colouring.
Uranus stands out from all the other planets because it lies on its side. It is thought that young
Uranus was knocked into this position by a giant space rock in the distant past. Its neighbour,
Neptune, has bizarre weather. Energy from the Sun heats up Earth and drives its weather, but
cold Neptune is 30 times farther away from the Sun. It has monstrous storms and unbearably
fast winds.
Jupiter is the largest giant. Earth would fit across its face 11 times, and it has a mass that is 2.5
times that of all the other planets combined. Young Jupiter was even bigger - five times its
present size. The planet shrinks by around 0.8 inch (2cm) a year as it cools. Saturn, the next
largest, is almost twice as far from the Sun as Jupiter is. It is an imperfect ball shape - the region
around its equator bulges. Saturn has very clear rings, and we get different views of these as the
planet orbits the Sun. Sometimes we see them from above and at other times from below.
The top layers of Jupiter's and Saturn's gas atmospheres make colourful bands that go all the
way around the planets. Storms grow and rage within the atmospheres of these two planets. A
colossal storm on Jupiter, called the Great Red Spot has been raging and swirling for more than
300 years. No one knows how much longer it could last, but it could potentially be seen for
generations to come.
(1) State whether the following statements are True (T) or False (F) by writing "T" or "F" in
the space given.

(a) An essay on 'Save forests for better environment'.
You may include the following:
• what the forests are
• what the present situation of forests is
• how we can save forests
• steps that can be taken to save forests.
