ASSESMENT #1

THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD

Angel Grace Bangcasan BSCpE 2-5

Globalization shows that the societies of the world are connecting now more than ever. It is a
complex process, producing several contradictory effects in changing relations of culture and power.
According to Professor Manfred Steger, it refers to the enlargement and intensification of social relations
that appear to transform our present social condition of weakening nationality into one of globality.

We need to use the interdisciplinary approach in globalization so that we avoid the parochial
perspective since this will attach a profoundly rigid and narrow way of thinking especially that these refer to
the expansion and intensification of social relations and the concept of time and space. Globalization and
the Contemporary world is bound to be inherently interdisciplinary because, we will be able to see the
whole thus, conclude a more accurate diagnosis of current events and the world in general. With this, we
will be able to understand the social, economic, political, and cultural processes that shape one's structure
and consider each part as a member of a larger whole.

The Sociological Imagination encourages us to consider biography, and history, and the relations
between the two within society. Through this, we are capable of seeing the social patterns that influence an
individual, the wider society, and how the connections of personal problems that are collectively shared
may be the reason for larger social issues that are needed to be addressed. Exercising our sociological
imagination in this contemporary world will enable us to understand societal issues and its intricacies on a
larger scale thus, we are able to make connections to the root cause of structures

A State is a political concept and a legal fiction. State is a community of persons that occupies a
definite portion of territory, has a government of its own which its people have to render their obedience to,
and has sovereignty. In the absence of even just one element, a state cannot be a state. It serves as the
main political actor within the global, political, and economic arena. It is also recognized by other countries,
and it regulates governing foreign and domestic trade. On the other hand, a Nation is an ethnic concept, a
sociological connectivity that refers to a large group of individuals who believe that they belong together
since they acquire shared similar values or “cultural and identity- based term” who share a common
language, historical experience, religion, or institution. Here, there is a collective or communal identity. A
nation is a group of people who has a strong sense of unity and common consciousness.
