Method Statement for Spark Test
1. Introduction
Purpose: The Spark Test is used to detect pinhole leaks, punctures, cuts, or any other
defects in rubber linings that expose the base metal.
Scope: This method statement covers the procedure for conducting a Spark Test on
rubber-lined vessels.
2. Test Equipment
High-Frequency AC Spark Tester: Capable of producing sufficient voltages (15,000 –
45,000 volts) for proper calibration.
Probes: T-shaped, L-shaped, or brush electrodes suitable for the size, geometry, and type
of lining being inspected.
Steel Calibration Coupon: 12” x 12” with a known leak, lined with the same material
and thickness as the material to be tested.
3. Preparation
Visual Inspection: Conduct a thorough visual inspection of the entire lining before
performing the Spark Test.
Equipment Calibration: Verify the spark tester equipment and probes before use.
Test Area Preparation: Ensure the test area is clean and free from any contaminants.
4. Test Procedure
Calibration: Use the steel calibration coupon to verify the spark tester's output voltage.
Testing: Move the probe over the surface of the rubber lining in a slow, continuous
stroke at a rate of approximately 12 inches/second. Overlap passes to ensure 100%
coverage1.
Detection: Listen for the sound of sparks and observe the tester's response to detect leaks.
5. Post-Test Inspection
Visual Inspection: Conduct a final visual inspection to confirm the presence of any
defects detected during the Spark Test.
Documentation: Record the test results, including any defects found and corrective
actions taken.
6. Safety Considerations
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear protective overalls, goggles, gloves,
safety shoes, and a helmet.
Safety Procedures: Follow all safety procedures to prevent accidents and ensure a safe
working environment.
7. Approval and Variations
Approval: Obtain approval from the relevant authority before conducting the Spark Test.
