SECTION 1 - GENERAL

The API 617 clause / paragraph numbering system has been used
throughout this specification for ease of reference

1.0 SCOPE OF SPECIFICATION


1.1 Scope
1.1.1 [Add]
This specification applies to centrifugal compressor units in oil/gas production
and petroleum product services, and is based on API Specification 617, Sixth
Edition, February 1995.

1.1.2 [Add]
This specification gives the minimum requirements, for the design, material
selection, inspection and preparation for shipment for skid mounted
centrifugal compressors. The requirements for documentation are presented
in the enquiry/purchase requisition and the Vendor Document Requirement
Schedule (VDRS) therein.

1.1.3 [Add]
Clauses and Paragraphs in API 617 not mentioned in this specification are
also applicable.

1.1.4 [Add]
Deviations from the requirements of this specification are not permitted
without prior written approval of the Client.

1.3 Conflicting requirements

In the event of any conflict between this specification and requisitions, the
individual data sheets or other referenced data, the individual data sheet shall
govern.

1.4 Definition of Terms

The commercial terms are used in this specification are defined as follows:

CODE CODE is defined as the applicable Design Code

CLIENT CLIENT is defined as Waha Oil Company. CLIENT is the


company to whom all materials and equipment will be delivered
and is the end user of such materials and equipment.

PURCHASER PURCHASER is the company appointed by Waha Oil Company


to place the purchase order for the material or equipment on
Waha Oil Company’s behalf.

ENGINEER ENGINEER is defined as Teknica (UK) Ltd. ENGINEER is the


engineering consultant appointed by Waha Oil Company to
produce the engineering design for the Project, and to prepare
technical requisitions, associated engineering deliverables and
purchase documentation.

ENGINEER is authorised to review and approve all VENDOR


document submissions required in PURCHASER Purchase
Conditions.

Correspondence on all technical issues shall be addressed by the


ENGINEER. Where the term CLIENT or PURCHASER appears
in the following document in relation to any technical issue this
shall be interpreted to mean ENGINEER acting on CLIENT’s
behalf.

VENDOR VENDOR is defined as the company engaged in a purchase


contract with PURCHASER, for the supply of materials or
equipment. During the Bidding or Tender stage VENDOR shall
be referred to as BIDDER.

SUB-VENDOR SUB-VENDOR is defined as a company awarded a sub-order by


VENDOR for part of the work awarded to the VENDOR. Note that
SUB-VENDORs are subject to CLIENT approval.

INSPECTION INSPECTION AUTHORITY is defined as the organisation that


AUTHORITY verifies that the material or equipment supplied by the VENDOR
has been designed, constructed, inspected, and tested in strict
accordance with the requirements of the applicable design code.

INSPECTOR INSPECTOR is defined as a qualified individual representing the


CLIENT or PURCHASER who verifies that the material or
equipment supplied by the VENDOR has been designed,
constructed, inspected, tested, and packed in strict accordance
with the requirements of this specification and all other Purchase
Order requirements.

SHALL The word “Shall” denotes that the requirement is mandatory.

SHOULD The word “Should” denotes that the requirements is highly


recommended but is not mandatory.

The technical data supplied for the equipment is provided on the data sheets,
which form part of the requisition.

The Vendor shall complete the data sheets and submit them with his
proposal. Prior to shipment, the Vendor shall submit a complete set of “as
built” data sheets.

2.0 SECTION 2 – BASIC DESIGN


2.1 General
2.1.1 [Replace]
Replace “20” years with “25” years and also replace “at least 3 years” with “at
least 4 years”.

[Add]
Compressor shall be supplied by a qualified Vendor with manufacturing
experience of similar equipment type as that of the proposed machine. The
qualified Vendor must have manufactured at least two compressors of
comparable speed, power rating and design pressures and temperatures for
gases of similar characteristics to the specified gas and shall have
satisfactory track record for at least two years field operation.

In addition, the machine shall be designed for safe, continuous, unattended


operation for the specified duties.

2.1.4 [Add]
The Vendor shall clearly illustrate the projected performance on a head-flow

graph with speed lines, efficiency lines and surge limit. The head-flow graph
shall cover all speeds between 105% of the design and the minimum
continuous speed of the driver. The operating point of each of the off-design
conditions shall be plotted by the Vendor.
In applications where compressors will operate in parallel the minimum head
rise from the rated point to the predicted surge shall be 8 percent and the
head difference for the same flow shall not exceed 2 percent.

2.1.5 [Replace with]

Refer to Project Specification 5906G-GL-G-GE-7000 00 for the relevant


design data.

2.1.6 Replace the word ‘purchaser’ in the first sentence with ‘Client and purchaser’.

2.1.7 [Add]
The barrel compressor inner casing (diaphragms) shall be of a horizontally
split design. The head cover retention system or the barrel compressor shall
be of shear ring type design.
Vendor shall provide a suitable hydraulic bundle puller and cradle (special
tools) to allow safe rotor withdrawal and prevent damage to casing / inner
parts.

2.1.10 [Replace with] The maximum noise level shall not exceed 85 dBA at 3 feet
from the perimeter of the skid.

2.1.11 Liquid injection is not required.

2.1.14 Delete the bullet and delete ‘when specified’.

2.1.15 [Replace with]

All electrical equipment and components shall be suitable for the area
classification specified on the data sheets and shall comply with the
referenced project specification 5906G-GL-E-SP-5009 00 and 5906G-GL-E-
SP-5010 00.

2.1.17 Delete ‘when specified’ and add that compressor shall be suitable for site
operation on air or nitrogen. This is to allow mechanical testing of the
compressor on site.
Replace ‘purchaser’ with ‘Client and purchaser’.

2.1.19 [New]
When electric motor drivers are equipped with `fast' transfer facilities, the
compressor train shall be capable of withstanding momentary high torque
overloads equal to four times motor nameplate rating. The suitability of this
rating shall be confirmed by Purchaser after final electrical system
characteristics are defined.

In addition, for synchronous motor drives, the compressor train shall also be
capable of withstanding the peak oscillatory torque values predicted by the
system transient torsional analysis of the motor starting.

2.2 Casings

2.2.8 Ductile (nodular) iron casings are not acceptable.

2.2.9 [Add]
Castings shall be radially split for gases of molecular weight less than 15, or
when the maximum allowable working pressure exceeds 550 psig.

2.2.10 [Add]
Lifting lugs shall be provided for lifting the top half of the casing for
horizontally split compressors.
Radially split casings shall also be provided with lifting lugs.

2.2.16.3 [Add]
Casing joint bolting and main process connections shall be designed to suit
tensioning by hydraulic equipment.

2.3 Interstage Diaphragms and Inlet Guide Vanes


2.3.1 Delete the bullet.

2.3.5 Diaphragm cooling is not acceptable.

2.3.6 [New]
If the side stream flow exceeds 15% of the total flow to the impeller, the
entrance passage shall minimise the disturbances at the impeller eye. In this
case the standard spaced diaphragm section is not acceptable. Use of extra
spacing between the impellers is an acceptable method for introducing a side
stream.

2.4 Casing Connections

2.4.2 Main Process Connections

2.4.2.1 Delete the bullet.

2.4.2.3 Delete the bullet and add:


Where a Vendor has no previous satisfactory experience of providing flanges
to paragraph 2.4.2.2 requirements, then mating flanges, studs, nuts, gaskets
and suitable reducers (to accommodate the next larger ANSI piping size)
shall be provided. The reducer shall be fully welded to the mating flange.

2.4.3 Auxiliary Connections

2.4.3.2 [Add]
Individual drain connections shall be provided for horizontally split casing
compressors. Each drain connection shall be piped to skid edge and be
terminated with a suitable isolation valve. Angled valves are not acceptable.

2.4.3.5 [Replace with]


Where flanged connections are impracticable, for oil or flammable gas 1 inch
or larger connection shall be full penetration butt weld. Socket weld
connections are not acceptable.

2.4.3.6 [Replace with]

Pipe nipples shall not exceed 6 inches (150 mm) in length. Pipe nipples of
schedule 160 for 1 inch and smaller and a minimum of schedule 80 for 1½
inch and larger and be provided with a weld neck flange.

2.5 External Forces and Moments.

2.5.1 [Replace with]


The allowable nozzle loads shall be in accordance with the following table:

2.6 Rotating Elements


2.6.2 [Add]
Shaft ends shall be tapered and be suitable for hydraulically mounted
couplings. Vendor shall provide the required hydraulic equipment for this
purpose.

2.6.7 Delete ‘riveted’ from the second sentence.

2.6.8 Delete the word ‘and riveted’.

2.6.9 Cast impellers are not acceptable.

2.6.16 [Add]
Sizing of the balancing drum shall be such that a positive load is maintained
on the active side of the thrust bearing for all operating and upset conditions.

2.7 Bearings and Bearing Housings


2.7.1 General

2.7.1.2 Delete ‘Unless otherwise specified’.


[Add]
Dual Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD) shall be provided for each
journal bearing.
Thrust bearing shall be fitted with two, dual RTDs on each side.

2.7.4 Bearing Housings

2.7.4.8 [New]
Adequate space shall be provided between the casing and the bearing
housing to allow fitting of an earthing brush, should this become necessary. A
design and drawing shall be provided for such an arrangement.

2.8 Shaft Seals


2.8.1 [Add]
The use of unidirectional self acting dry gas seal is the preferred option for
centrifugal compressors, provided that Vendor has satisfactory field
experience for similar applications.

Where self acting dry gas seals are technically not feasible for the proposed
duty, the Vendor, in consultation with the seal manufacturer, shall design the
system with a view to converting the arrangement, at a future date, to accept
dry gas seal system without the need for any site machining.

Where both Dry Gas Sealing and conventional Seal Oil Sealing
arrangements are feasible, the Vendor, as Bidder, shall provide Option Prices
for both arrangements. Together with the option prices, Bidder shall state his
recommended Seal arrangement, clearly stating the advantages and benefits
of his preferred arrangement.

Vendor, as Bidder, shall provide a separate price and technical specification,


for the supply of a suitable skid-mounted nitrogen generation package
(Pressure Swing Absorber (PSA) type or equivalent) to provide nitrogen for
the dry gas seals. This price shall appear as a separate line item on the
Bidder’s pricing summary.

2.8.2 Delete the bullet and delete ‘when specified’.

2.8.3 Delete the bullet and add:


The preferred seal type shall be as per project specification 5906G-GL-M-SP-
3017 00, Chapter 4, figure 4A – 2 (tandem type with an intermediate
labyrinth seal). Floating carbon bushes shall also be provided at the shaft exit
from the casing.

2.8.3.2[Add]
Gas leakage from static compressor shall be prevented when mechanical
contact type seals are provided.

2.8.4 [Add]
For low temperature services, provisions shall be made to maintain the
sealing oil above its pour point temperature at the inner seal and drain
connection.

2.8.7 Delete the bullet and ‘Unless otherwise specified’ and add:
When buffer gas injection is required, the Vendor shall provide the complete
buffer gas control system and also advise the flow rates requirements.

2.8.8 Delete the bullet and ‘’When specified’. The Vendor shall provide all the
necessary control system requirements to prevent the ingress of air and
moisture for all operating conditions including start up and shut down.

2.9 Dynamics

2.9.1 Critical Speeds

2.9.1.4 [Add] Where the calculated amplification factor is less than 2.5, this shall be
verified by the residual unbalance testing, as per Clause 2.9.3.

2.9.1.6 Delete ‘unless the resonances are critically damped’ from this clause.

2.9.2 Lateral Analysis

2.9.2.2 [Add]
The Vendor shall provide details of all the assumptions made for the
excitations and damping, including film stiffness used for damped unbalance
response analysis.

2.9.2.5 (e)[Add]
Sub-synchronous resonances at 52% or below of the normal rated speed
shall be avoided. Where such requirement cannot be met, the Vendor shall
perform a rotor stability analysis at rated speed for a constant speed train and
from the minimum speed to 125% of rated speed for a variable speed train.

2.9.4 Torsional Analysis

2.9.4.3 Delete the word ‘preferably’ from the first sentence for constant speed motor
drives. For variable drives, where such requirement may not be avoidable,
the Vendor shall prove that system will not be subject to adverse effects.

2.9.5 Delete ‘when specified’.

2.9.4.6 [Add]
The acceptance criteria will be subject to Vendor demonstration that the
transient events in the motor will have no adverse effect, when considering
the following:
- Start-up of the motor
- 2 phase terminal short circuits
- Asynchronous run-up on synchronous motors
- pulse operation of a variable speed motor
- Out-of-synchronous reconnection of the supply after a transient power
failure.

The above analyses will be subject to purchaser’s approval.

2.9.5 Vibration and Balancing

2.9.5.5 [Add]
‘A’ values given is to include the run-out.
The casing or bearing housing maximum allowable vibration velocity levels in
any plane shall not be more than 0.125 in/s (rms).

2.10 Lube Oil and Seal Oil Systems

2.10.3 [Add]
Self acting dry gas seals shall be used (tandem with intermediate labyrinth)
as the preferred option.
Seal oil system may be used provided the Vendor has no proven field
experience with dry gas seals for the proposed application.

The lube oil and seal oil system may be combined provided the gas being
handled in not corrosive, toxic, or have higher percentage of heavy

hydrocarbons (molecular weight of 40 plus). Adequate decontamination and


degassing facilities shall be provided for the inner drain oil before it can be
returned to the oil reservoir.
Where separate oil systems are used, adequate separation space shall be
provided between the seal and bearing housing to eliminate the possibility of
cross contamination.

2.10.5 [Replace with]


The pressurised oil system shall comply with the requirements of project
specification, 5906G-GL-M-SP-3017 00.

2.11 Materials

2.11.1 General

2.11.1.1[Add]
Alternative materials of construction may be offered by the Vendor, if in his
experience the alternative materials are superior to those specified.

2.11.1.7 [Replace the first sentence with]


Material for compressors for gas containing hydrogen sulphide (25 vppm or
more) shall comply with the requirements of NACE MR 0175 (latest edition).

2.11.1.9 [Add] Overlays are acceptable subject to prior written approval on Client.

2.11.1.15 [Replace first sentence with]


The bolting material for pressure containing parts shall be ASTM A193 grade
B7 and nuts shall conform to ASTM 194 grade 2H as a minimum.

2.11.2 Pressure – Containing Parts

2.11.2.10 Delete the bullet and ‘When specified’.

2.11.5 Impellers

2.11.5.3[Add]
Any new impeller design shall be overspeed tested to 120% of the aximum
continuous speed. After the overspeed test, the impeller shall be examined
and any permanent deformation will be a cause for rejection.

3.0 SECTION 3 – ACCESSORIES


3.1 Drivers
3.1.3 [Add]
The driver shall be suitable for starting the compressor with casing
pressurised to settle out pressure or suction pressure, in addition to being
able to start on Nitrogen gas. In the latter case, the Vendor shall advise the
limitation on the pressure ratio and the maximum allowable temperature rise.

Variable speed drivers shall be suitable for all operating conditions and speed
range specified up to 105% of the rated speed.

3.1.5 Delete this clause and replace by:


Electric motors shall be in accordance with project specification 5906G-GL-E-
SP-5010 00.requirements.

3.1.7 Delete this clause and replace by:


Gas turbine drivers shall conform to project specification 5906G-GL-M-SP-
3014 00 requirements.

3.1.8 Delete this clause and replace by:


Gearboxes shall be to API 613 and AGMA 420 and AGMA 421. Gearbox
rating shall be based on the potential power rating of the driver. Epicyclic
gearboxes are not acceptable.
Vendor shall provide a completed set of API data sheets for the proposed
gearbox.

3.2 Couplings and Guards

3.2.1 Delete ‘Unless otherwise specified’.


The coupling guards shall be of non-sparking type.

3.2.2 [Add]
Coupling shall be of dry non-lubricated spacer type in accordance with API
671 specification. Spacer length shall be suitable to allow withdrawal of the
bearing shell or seal cartridges without removing the gearbox or the
compressor.

The surge control system shall be invariant to process gas characteristics.
Vendor shall also provide the recycle valve of low noise type, with linear
characteristics with full stroke timing of less than one second.
Vendor shall carry out a stability analysis for the anti-surge control system,
where machines are operating in parallel and / or with variable speed drives.

This test is required to be carried out on one unit of identical machines.


However for units required for parallel operation, Vendor shall guarantee
satisfactory operation can be achieved with equal / unequal load sharing
mode. This requirement is also applicable to spare rotor.

4.3.6.1.1[Add]
No correction for Reynolds number variation shall be made.

For a variable speed machine, five test points (including the surge point) shall
also be taken at maximum continuous speed and the minimum operating
speed.

4.3.6.1.3 [Replace with]


For variable speed compressors, a speed other than the ‘normal’ speed may
be used –if necessary- to achieve the required performance. In this case the
maximum continuous speed and trip speed margins shall be maintained and
in accordance with Figure 1 of API 617, Sixth Edition February 1995.

value.

speed.
• Static leakage before and after the test.
• Buffer gas and Separation gas flow rates.

The leakage and flow rates shall be corrected to site operating condition, if
necessary.

4.3.6.1.9[New]
Vendor performance procedure shall state all the flows and any correction
factors for internal losses, balance losses and any other losses that should
be considered.
The procedure will be subject to Client’s and purchaser’s approval.

4.3.6.2 Complete Unit Test

A compete unit test is required during the Mechanical Running Test of each
package. These tests are in addition to individual equipment tests when
specified on the data sheets.

4.3.6.5 Helium Test

Helium test is required for compressor handling gases of molecular weight of


15 or less.

4.3.6.6 Sound Level Test

[Replace] Sound pressure level measurements shall be performed for all the
equipment.
The Noise levels shall not exceed 85 dBA at 3 feet from the skid edge.

4.3.6.7 Auxiliary Equipment Test

[Add]
Self Acting Dry Gas Seals shall be tested, generally to API Appendix I, at full
speed and pressure at seal Manufacturer’s works.
The seal Manufacturer shall submit a test procedure for Client’s and
Engineer’s approval.
As a minimum, the following points shall be addressed / verified during these
tests.

• Overspeed test as per clause 4.3.3.


• Static seal leakage pressure tests, from atmospheric to maximum
sealing pressure when cold and hot (simulated shutdown with full
pressure).
• Verify dynamic seal faces lift off minimum rotating speed.
• Dynamic leakage flow rates measurements at the maximum
continuous speed.
• Measurement of leakage rates at trip speed for 3 minutes period.
• Post-test strip down and inspection.

4.3.6.8 Post-Test Inspection of Compressor Internals

This inspection is required after completion the mechanical test of the


machine (including the spare rotor) and performance test.

4.3.6.9 Full Pressure / Full Load / Full Speed Tests

The above tests will be carried out on site.


Full details shall be developed jointly by the Client / Owner and the Vendor.
The Vendor shall be responsible for the complete package until the unit has
been accepted by the Client / Owner.

4.3.6.10 Spare Parts Test

Spare compressor rotor and spare gear rotors shall be mechanically tested
as per the main component tests.

4.4 Preparation for Shipment

4.4.1 Replace “type of shipment specified” with “ sea worthy shipment” in the first
sentence and replace ‘six’ months with ‘eighteen’ months in the third
sentence, unless specified otherwise in the requisition.

4.4.3 Replace the words ‘…released by the purchaser’ with ‘…after inspector notify
the Purchaser of his release and the Purchaser’s release note for equipment
for shipment ’.

4.4.3.1 Painting and coating shall be in accordance with project specification 5906G-
GL-M-SP-3021. Vendor may offer his standard painting and preservation
systems for the proposed equipment for Client’s review and approval.

4.4.3.2 [Add]

The spare rotor shall be supplied in a metal container which is fully nitrogen
